Summary: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition characterized by fatty degeneration of the liver, insulin resistance, oxidative stress, lipotoxicity, adipokine secretion, endotoxins released by gut microbiota, and endoplasmic reticulum stress. NAFLD can progress to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), fibrosis, and advanced liver diseases. Phosphorylated Smad isoforms play a crucial role in the early diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in NASH patients.

Summary: Fibrosis is the excessive deposition of extracellular matrix components in the processes of tissue repair, causing organ structural integrity and functional impairment. Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) is a key factor in promoting fibrosis by activating profibrotic signals. This review discusses the role of TGF-beta signaling in fibrotic organs, as well as potential therapeutic options for targeting tissue fibrosis through modulating TGF-beta signaling.

Summary: GDF15 is a TGF beta-like cytokine that regulates target gene expression. TGF beta downregulates the expression of GDF15 through the activation of Smad signaling pathways. CAPE acts as an antagonist to block the effect of TGF beta on GDF15 expression.

Summary: This study found that the dysregulation of TGF beta/Smads pathway genes may play a role in the pathogenesis of kidney cancer. The expression of these genes was found to be altered in both the tumor tissues and the tumor microenvironment, which may impact the aggressiveness and spread of the tumor.

Summary: This study investigated the expression of TGF-β1/Smad signaling in different types of glomerulonephritis and found that TGF-β1 expression is an independent risk factor for progression to chronic kidney disease. The co-expression pattern of pSmad3 and Smad7 in glomerulus is correlated with renal inflammation.

Summary: Metastasis is the main cause of mortality in solid tumors, but there are no available antimetastatic drugs on the market. This study focused on a synthetic compound called HPH-15, which showed anti-EMT and anti-cell migration activities in non-small-cell lung cancer cells. HPH-15 was found to inhibit downstream TGF-beta signaling and could potentially lead to the development of new antimetastatic drugs.

Summary: This study demonstrates that Trimetazidine (TMZ) can inhibit liver fibrosis and hepatic stellate cell proliferation induced by CCl4 and TGF-beta. TMZ exerts its effects by blocking the activation of TGF beta/Smad signaling pathway. These findings provide new insights into the potential application of TMZ in the treatment of liver fibrosis.

Summary: Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) are crucial for defense against intracellular pathogens and tumors, requiring efficient migration to locate and destroy infected cells in different regions of the body. The transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) and canonical SMAD-dependent signaling pathways are essential for coordinating changes in homing receptor expression and ensuring successful migration of CTLs.

Summary: The study found that butyric acid inhibited cell viability, induced cellular apoptosis, stimulated ROS and HO-1 production, and increased ICAM-1 mRNA expression and protein synthesis in endothelial cells. Some inhibitors diminished the cell viability affected by BA, but none affected the increased sICAM-1 secretion stimulated by BA.

Summary: This article reviews the prevalence, characteristics, diagnosis and treatment methods of vertical root fractures in non-endodontically treated teeth and endodontically treated teeth. It found that most patients were over 40 years old, male patients had a higher prevalence in the non-endodontically treated group, and VRFNETT are more often observed in the Chinese population.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the involvement of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway in Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (PgLPS)-induced inflammation in human dental pulp cells. The results showed that PgLPS upregulated the mRNA and protein levels of IL-6, IL-8, PI3K, and p-Akt, and pretreatment with LY294002 attenuated PgLPS-induced IL-6 and IL-8 mRNA expression. In conclusion, this study revealed that PgLPS promotes inflammation in dental pulp cells by dysregulating the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.

Summary: This study focuses on the preparation of stretchable zwitterionic poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) hydrogels. A physical crosslinking method utilizing hydrophobic interactions is developed to improve the mechanical properties of the hydrogels. The PSBMA(phy) hydrogels exhibit greater flexibility, self-healing properties, and adhesive properties compared to the PSBMA(chem) hydrogels.
