Complexing polymer-coated electrodes have been synthesized by oxidative electropolymerization of 4-azulen-1-yl-2,6-bis(2-thienyl)pyridine (monomer L). The novel chelating chemically modified electrodes were used for the electrochemical detection of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions by means of the chemical preconcentration-anodic stripping technique. The electrode material showed a particular selectivity towards lead ions, even in the presence of a large excess of other metal cations. Detection limits of 0.7 nM and 10 nM were obtained for lead(II) and cadmium(II) ions, respectively. The modified electrodes have been used for the determination of lead in natural water and tap-water. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Toxic Metals (As, Cd, Ni, Pb) Impact in the Most Common Medicinal Plant (Mentha piperita)

Cristina Dinu, Stefania Gheorghe, Anda Gabriela Tenea, Catalina Stoica, Gabriela-Geanina Vasile, Roxana Luisa Popescu, Ecaterina Anca Serban, Luoana Florentina Pascu

Summary: The study found that Mentha piperita accumulated Cd, Ni, and Pb in different parts of the plant, with the highest concentration in the roots. Initially, there was no significant impact on growth and development, but phytotoxic effects were observed after prolonged exposure. Transfer coefficients and translocation factors were less than 1, indicating the plant immobilized metals in the roots.

Summary: The electrochemical characterization of three (Z)-5-(azulen-1-ylmethylene)-2-thioxo-thiazolidin-4-ones was conducted to investigate their potential application as complexing ligands for heavy metal ions. The redox potential was found to be influenced by the alkyl groups, and a possible oxidation mechanism was proposed. The compounds were immobilized on glassy carbon electrodes and tested for their ability to complex heavy metal ions through adsorptive stripping voltammetry.

Summary: A modified biodegradable magnesium alloy with polylactic acid nanofibers was obtained using the electrospinning technique, and the presence of PLA nanofibers was confirmed through various characterization methods. The research indicates that the Mg alloy coated with PLA exhibits reduced hydrogen evolution and improved corrosion resistance, showing a shift towards hydrophobic character.

Anda-Gabriela Tenea, Cristina Dinu, George-Octavian Buica, Gabriela-Geanina Vasile

Summary: This paper validates an electrochemical procedure for on-site determination of Hg2+ ions in wastewater samples using a modified carbon screen-printed electrode with a complexing polymeric film. The electrode shows a linear range of 20 μg/L to 150 μg/L, with a LOD of 6 μg/L, LOQ of 20 μg/L, and an average measurement uncertainty of 26% for mercury ions. Comparison with atomic absorption spectrometry method indicates excellent recovery yields.

Electrochemistry of Rhodanine Derivatives as Model for New Colorimetric and Electrochemical Azulene Sensors for the Detection of Heavy Metal Ions

Ovidiu-Teodor Matica, Cornelia Musina (Borsaru), Alina Giorgiana Brotea, Eleonora-Mihaela Ungureanu, Mihaela Cristea, Raluca Isopescu, George-Octavian Buica, Alexandru C. Razus

Summary: Rhodanine is a heterocycle with complexing properties for heavy metal ions. The electrochemical characterization of R1 and R2 revealed their similar electron-donating nature. Chemically modified electrodes based on R1 and R2 were used for heavy metal recognition, and it was found that R1 was more sensitive for Pb(II) detection while R2 had a higher absorption coefficient for optical measurements.

Cu(II) and Hg(II) detection under photo-assisted accumulation in an open circuit potential at a polyazulene-EDTA like modified electrode

Cristian Pirvu, Gabriela Stanciu, George-Octavian Buica

Summary: The influence of UV light irradiation on the metal ion open-circuit accumulation process was investigated using a glassy carbon modified electrode with polyL. The study found that photo-assisted metal ion open circuit accumulation enabled the simultaneous detection of Cu(II) and Hg(II), with low detection limits of 0.4 nM and 0.7 nM, respectively.
