Summary: This study reports the efficient self-templated formation of optically active btp homocircuit [2]catenane enantiomers through X-ray diffraction crystallography for structural characterization. The self-assembly reaction was closely monitored in solution, facilitating the characterization of the pseudo-rotaxane reaction intermediate prior to mechanically interlocking the pre-organised system via ring-closing metathesis.

Summary: A Ni/1-bpp catalyst was found to be highly effective in the Negishi alkylation of various alkylpyridinium salts, including α-primary and α-secondary ones. The successful Negishi alkylation of benzylic pyridinium salts was also achieved for the first time under the same conditions. Additionally, 14 derivatives of 1-bpp with different steric and electronic properties were synthesized to investigate their impact on the success of the Negishi alkylation.

Summary: The synthesis of six new ligands with dithiolane or carboxylic acid tether groups is described, with their iron(II) perchlorate complexes showing gradual thermal spin-crossover (SCO) in the solid state, except for one that remains predominantly high-spin. These complexes also exhibit different SCO midpoint temperatures in solution, depending on the functional group linking the tether groups to the pyridyl ring.

Summary: In this study, a novel one-pot biocatalytic process was demonstrated using recombinant microbial whole cells as catalysts to prepare a versatile chemical intermediate 2,6-bis(hydroxymethyl)pyridine from naturally-occurring 2,6-lutidine. After scale up, bioconversion achieved titers exceeding 12 g L-1 with a space-time yield of 0.8 g L-1 h(-1), offering a simpler and more sustainable alternative to multistep organic synthesis protocols.

Summary: This study investigates the structural facets of bistable spin-crossover complexes and their role in inducing hysteresis. Through single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, it is found that molecular reorganizations and conformation switching contribute to the observed spin-state switching and hysteresis. These insights could potentially aid in the design of molecule-based switching and memory elements.

Summary: The study found that Mentha piperita accumulated Cd, Ni, and Pb in different parts of the plant, with the highest concentration in the roots. Initially, there was no significant impact on growth and development, but phytotoxic effects were observed after prolonged exposure. Transfer coefficients and translocation factors were less than 1, indicating the plant immobilized metals in the roots.

Summary: The electrochemical characterization of three (Z)-5-(azulen-1-ylmethylene)-2-thioxo-thiazolidin-4-ones was conducted to investigate their potential application as complexing ligands for heavy metal ions. The redox potential was found to be influenced by the alkyl groups, and a possible oxidation mechanism was proposed. The compounds were immobilized on glassy carbon electrodes and tested for their ability to complex heavy metal ions through adsorptive stripping voltammetry.
