Summary: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) appears to be a low-risk medical procedure for treating severe psychiatric disorders, but older individuals with severe somatic diseases have a higher risk of death. Extra measures should be taken to optimize their medical health during the pre-ECT workup, and during and after ECT.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the real-life effectiveness of maintenance electroconvulsive therapy(mECT) in bipolar disorder(BD). The results showed that mECT can effectively reduce the number and duration of psychiatric hospitalizations in BD patients, supporting its effectiveness in the treatment of BD.

Summary: This study analyzed the factors affecting the duration of electrographic seizures during ECT treatment and found that seizure duration decreased with increasing treatment number and dose, indicating a sustained effect during treatment. Sex did not have a significant impact on seizure duration.

Summary: Update on Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT): ECT is effective for several disorders, notably severe or treatment-resistant depression, showing rapid response. However, stigma hampers its usage. The mechanism remains unknown, but a seizure is necessary for efficacy. ECT prominently affects memory, albeit transiently.

Summary: The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between clinical response and postictal suppression indicators during ECT treatment. The results showed that postictal suppression from the first ECT session can predict long-term clinical response, but not early clinical response. Postictal suppression frequency was not associated with clinical response, and there was also no association between postictal suppression and short-term cognitive performance.

Summary: The vast majority of comparisons between real-world studies (RWS) and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) showed good congruence in results, indicating that RCTs, despite their limitations, provide generalizable evidence for real-world settings. This finding has implications for both regulators and clinicians, as RWS can offer guidance in situations where double-blind clinical trial evidence is lacking.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the different practices in pre-electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) evaluation across European countries. Data from 18 clinics in 16 European countries were collected through an online survey and revealed significant variability in assessment approaches. The study suggests the inclusion of cognitive assessment and objective quantification of psychiatric symptoms in pre-ECT evaluation, as well as the standardization of ECT evaluation and treatment.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the electrophysiological basis of dysfunctional inhibitory control in adult ADHD. The study found that adult ADHD patients exhibited a lower anteriorization of the P3 component of the event-related brain response associated with the NoGo task condition (NGA). This lower NGA was associated with higher impulsivity scores and was corrected with stimulant medication treatment.

Summary: The recent decrease in the number of forensic psychiatric experts has reached a critical level, causing difficulties in the healthcare and justice systems. This study surveyed how to make forensic psychiatry and the work of forensic psychiatric experts more attractive. The results indicate that increasing the number of training institutes and reducing the cost of training can make forensic psychiatry training more appealing.

Summary: This study examined the influence of hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation on the quality of life and affective symptoms of patients. The findings showed that there were no significant differences in quality of life and affective symptoms between autologous and allogeneic transplant recipients. However, allogeneic transplant patients with symptoms of graft-versus-host disease experienced more severe depression and anxiety.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the knowledge, experience, and views about the treatment of catatonia in acute psychiatric care in Budapest, Hungary among residents and qualified psychiatrists. Findings revealed that while participants rated their knowledge of catatonia as moderate or significant, there were significant errors in identification of symptoms and underestimation of catatonia frequency. The majority of participants' views were consistent with the Kraepelinian concept associating catatonia primarily with schizophrenia, even though benzodiazepines are widely recommended as a first-line treatment.
