Summary: This study investigated the degradation and transformation of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) in integrated constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) systems. Results showed that sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) could improve the power output and reduce the internal resistance of CW-MFCs, but high concentration of SDBS had the potential to inhibit electricity generation and organics biodegradation due to its toxic effects. SDBS degradation in CW-MFCs involved alkyl chain degradation, desulfonation, and benzene ring cleavage, producing 19 intermediates. The bioaccumulation potential of SDBS was greatly reduced through the degradation by CW-MFCs, reducing its environmental risk.

Summary: The dilational rheology properties of two hydroxyl-substituted alkylbenzene sulfonates were investigated at the gas-liquid and oil-water interfaces. The length of the hydroxyl para-alkyl chain was found to affect interfacial behavior, with strong intermolecular interaction observed at the gas-liquid interface. The presence of oil molecules hindered interface tiling at the oil-water interface, resulting in reduced dilational viscoelasticity.

Summary: The synergism for lowering interfacial tension between heavy crude oil and betaine solutions is controlled by the size compatibility between surfactant molecules and surface-active substances in crude oil, as well as the optimized ratio of crude oil fraction to betaine.

Summary: This study investigates the interfacial behavior of alkyl ether carboxylate (AEC) surfactants in examples of sodium laureth-11 carboxylate and sodium trideceth-7 carboxylate. The results show that temperature has no significant effect on the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the surfactants, but does influence the interfacial tension values. Longer oxyethylene chains increase the sensitivity of the surfactants to temperature. In contrast, brine salinity has a greater impact on the interfacial behavior of sodium trideceth-7 carboxylate.

Summary: In the study, the surface activities and application of surfactant mixtures containing cationic surfactant DTAC and anionic amino acid surfactant SLG were systematically studied. The addition of DTAC significantly reduced the CMC value of the SLG system, indicating a strong interaction between DTAC and SLG. The compounding of DTAC and SLG increased solubility, reduced the Krafft point of SLG, and improved application performance.

Summary: This study investigates the Marangoni spreading dynamics and Marangoni synergism of binary surfactant mixtures. Experimental and modeling results confirm the synergistic effects of strong binary surfactant attraction on both surface tension reduction and Marangoni spreading. The study also finds that the thermodynamic parameter controls the spreading velocities at early times, while the kinetics of adsorption and desorption influence the occurrence of Marangoni synergism at later times.

Summary: The study explores the interfacial arrangement and viscoelastic properties of mixed surfactants at the air-liquid interface. The results show the displacement of anionic sodium oleate by nonionic surfactants at the interface, which is dependent on the hydrophilic part and hydrophobic chain of the nonionic surfactant.

Summary: This study investigated the dissolution of ferrihydrite in the presence of phosphorus and siderophores, revealing the formation of complex Fe-P precipitates under different pH conditions. Phosphorus was found to promote initial Fe release from minerals but subsequently prevent further attacks from protons and siderophores. Overall, there is an antagonistic relationship between phosphorus compounds and siderophores on ferrihydrite dissolution, providing insights into biologically-mediated Fe cycling in natural systems.

Summary: This paper presents a suite of techniques to measure the electrical and interfacial properties of room-temperature liquid eutectic gallium indium (EGaIn) as a function of applied electric potential. The study provides new insights into the mechanisms that cause the significant decrease in interfacial tension. A key finding is the hysteresis behavior of the interfacial tension with lowering applied potential. The authors combine these observations with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to evaluate the changes in interfacial tension arising from chemical, electrical, and mechanical changes on the interface.

Summary: This study investigates the synergistic interactions between an ionic liquid and non-ionic surfactants in aqueous solution. The addition of the ionic liquid increases the critical micelle concentration of the surfactant solution and allows for the modification of its physicochemical properties. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the micellization process is spontaneous and becomes more favorable with the addition of the non-ionic component.

Summary: This study explores the effect of surface charge properties of a photocatalyst on its photocatalytic activity. By synthesizing quaternization TiO2 particles with different alkyl chain lengths, the photocatalytic activity is improved. The introduction of a quaternary ammonium group enhances the adsorption capacity for anionic dyes through electrostatic attraction and improves the photodegradation efficiency of cationic dyes, resulting in improved photocatalytic activity.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the synergistic effect of chitosan particles (CP) and tannic acid (TA) in stabilizing oil-in-water emulsion. The CP-TA complex (3/5) was found to be the most stable due to its low zeta potential, low oil-water interfacial tension, high viscosity, and high TA content. Intense interaction between CP and TA in the complex led to the formation of large CP-TA particles.

Summary: A series of new Gemini surfactants were synthesized and characterized, showing good interfacial activity and low CMC values, promising for oil recovery in low permeability reservoirs. Varying the carbon number of the hydrophobic chain can control the surface activity and viscoelastic properties, helping to increase the oil-water interfacial tension and enhance oil recovery efficiency in reservoirs.
