Effects of the enamel matrix derivative on the proliferation and odontogenic differentiation of human dental pulp cells

Objective: The enamel matrix derivative (EMD) has a positive effect on the proliferation of human periodontal ligament cells and the healing of periodontal tissues. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of EMD on the proliferation and differentiation of human dental pulp cells (hDPCs) in vitro. Methods: hDPCs were isolated from human impacted third molars and cultured in vitro. After treatment with 100 mu g/mL EMD, the proliferation of hDPCs was determined by a cell counting kit 8 (CCK8) assay. After incubation in EMD osteogenic induction medium for 14 days, the osteogenic differentiation of hDPCs was evaluated by alkaline phosphatase ( ALP) activity, alizarin staining and the expression of osteogenesis-related genes. Results: The EMD osteogenic induction medium enhanced the proliferation of hDPCs. After osteogenic induction, EMD increased the osteogenic potential of hDPCs, as measured by alkaline phosphatase activity and calcium accumulation; the expression levels of osteogenesis-related genes, such as ALP, DSPP, BMP, and OPN were also upregulated. In addition, the expression levels of odontogenesis-related transcription factors Osterix and Runx2 were upregulated. Conclusions: EMD could enhance the mineralization of hDPSCs upregulated the expression of markers for odontoblast/osteoblast-like cells. Further studies are required to determine if EMD can improve pulp tissue repair and regeneration. (C) 2013 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Deformation Localization and Damage Constitutive Model of Raw Coal and Briquette Coal under Uniaxial Compression

Summary: The heterogeneous development of strain fields in hard and brittle raw coal material and soft plastic briquette coal material under uniaxial compression is evaluated using digital image correlation. A material damage constitutive model based on the statistical indicator of strain field is established. The results show that there are differences in the yield stage and failure mode between raw coal and briquette coal, and the progress of strain localization can reflect the damage and destruction process of materials.

The prognosis of type-2 papillary renal cell carcinoma patients was worse than that of clear cell renal carcinoma patients.

Bacteria debridement efficacy of two sonic root canal irrigant activation systems

Summary: The study compared the bacteria debridement efficacy of the first and second generations of sonic root canal irrigant activation systems. The results showed that activation of 2% NaOCl with either EndoActivator or SmartLite Pro EndoActivator significantly reduced the overall intracanal bacterial load compared to syringe-side-vented needle delivery. However, delivering 2% NaOCl for 5 minutes using the syringe-side-vented needle produced better bacteria debridement than either sonic agitation system.

Patients' experience with teledentistry compared to conventional follow-up visits in TMD clinic: A pilot study

Summary: The study compares the experience of patients seen using teledentistry with traditional Orofacial Pain and TMD visits. Results indicated a borderline difference in effectively using teledentistry for follow-ups among different age groups, but no significant differences were found in patients' experience between virtual and conventional visits. This suggests that high-quality dental care services can be provided remotely without adversely affecting patient experience or quality of care.

3D printed dental implants with a porous structure: The in vitro response of osteoblasts, fibroblasts, mesenchymal stem cells, and monocytes

Summary: This study characterized the surface topography and evaluated the biological responses of various cells to a novel 3D-printed dental implant. The surface of the implant showed a highly interconnected porous architecture and roughness, leading to good adhesion and growth of human oral osteoblasts, gingival fibroblasts, mesenchymal stem cells, and monocytes. These findings suggest that this 3D-printed implant has excellent potential for clinical applications.
