Purpose: This study examined the wear resistance of human enamel and feldspathic porcelain after simulated mastication against 3 zirconia ceramics, heat-pressed ceramic and conventional feldspathic porcelain. Materials and methods: Human teeth and feldspathic porcelain cusp were tested against ceramic discs. 5 brands were tested -3 monolithic zirconia, Prettau, Lava, and Rainbow, one lithium disilicate, IPS e.max Press, and one feldspathic porcelain, Vita-Omega 900. The surface was polished using a 600 grit and 1200 grit SiC paper. Each group was loaded for 300,000 cycles in a chewing simulator. The wear resistance was analyzed by measuring the volume of substance lost. The wear surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscopy to determine the wear characteristics. Results: Vita-Omega 900 led to the greatest amount of enamel wears followed by IPS e.max Press, Prettau, Lava and Rainbow. There was a significant difference between Vita-Omega 900 and IPS e.max Press (p < 0.05). The wear values for human enamel were significantly greater than those for feldspathic porcelain, regardless of the surface roughness of the ceramic specimens (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The wear behaviour of human enamel and feldspathic porcelain varies according to the type of substrate materials. On the other hand, 3 zirconia ceramics caused less wear in the abrader than the conventional ceramic. Clinical significance: Dental professionals should be aware of the wear effect of dental restorations on the opposing teeth or restorations. The amount of enamel wear was highest in feldspathic porcelains whereas zirconia ceramics caused less wear on the opposing teeth. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Effect of post-curing time on the color stability and related properties of a tooth-colored 3D-printed resin material

Eun-Hyuk Lee, Jin-Soo Ahn, Young-Jun Lim, Ho-Beom Kwon, Myung-Joo Kim

Summary: The post-curing time of 3D-printed resin for dental restorations significantly affects color stability and related properties such as degree of conversion, surface roughness, water contact angle, water sorption, and water solubility. Increasing post-curing time improves color stability, enhances degree of conversion, and decreases water contact angle.

Summary: This in vitro study investigated the effects of layer thickness and printing orientation on the color stability and stainability of 3D-printed resin. The results showed that layer thickness, printing orientation, and storage time significantly influenced the color changes of the resin. Water contact angle and surface roughness did not have a significant effect on stainability.

Influence of thermo-mechanical aging on fracture resistance and wear of digitally standardized chairside computer-aided-designed/computer-assisted-manufactured restorations

Se-Jun An, Hwalim Lee, Jin-Soo Ahn, Jung-Hwan Lee, Hae-Hyoung Lee, Yu-Sung Choi

Summary: The influence of thermal cycling and mechanical loading aging on fracture resistance and wear behavior of different chairside CAD/CAM premolar crowns was investigated. Glass-ceramic CAD/CAM crowns showed significantly higher fracture resistance than resin composite crowns. A 5-year TCML aging did not affect the fracture resistance of CAD/CAM crowns, but it produced larger wear tracks in resin nanoceramics than in other materials.

Association of Dental Diseases and Oral Hygiene Care With the Risk of Heart Failure in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes: A Nationwide Cohort Study

Youn Huh, Jung Eun Yoo, Sang-Hyun Park, Kyungdo Han, Seon Mee Kim, Hye Soon Park, Kyung Hwan Cho, Jin-Soo Ahn, Sang Ho Jun, Ga Eun Nam

Summary: This study investigated the association between dental diseases, oral hygiene care, and the incidence of heart failure (HF) in patients with type 2 diabetes. The results showed that an increased number of missing teeth was associated with a higher risk of HF, while regular dental cleaning and frequent toothbrushing were associated with a decreased risk of HF. The presence of dental diseases increased the risk of HF, but good oral hygiene care further reduced the risk of HF.

Bacteria debridement efficacy of two sonic root canal irrigant activation systems

Chang Zeng, Pei Hu, Colin P. Egan, Brian E. Bergeron, Franklin Tay, Jingzhi Ma

Summary: The study compared the bacteria debridement efficacy of the first and second generations of sonic root canal irrigant activation systems. The results showed that activation of 2% NaOCl with either EndoActivator or SmartLite Pro EndoActivator significantly reduced the overall intracanal bacterial load compared to syringe-side-vented needle delivery. However, delivering 2% NaOCl for 5 minutes using the syringe-side-vented needle produced better bacteria debridement than either sonic agitation system.

Summary: The study compares the experience of patients seen using teledentistry with traditional Orofacial Pain and TMD visits. Results indicated a borderline difference in effectively using teledentistry for follow-ups among different age groups, but no significant differences were found in patients' experience between virtual and conventional visits. This suggests that high-quality dental care services can be provided remotely without adversely affecting patient experience or quality of care.

Giovanna Iezzi, Barbara Zavan, Morena Petrini, Letizia Ferroni, Tania Vanessa Pierfelice, Ugo D'Amora, Alfredo Ronca, Emira D'Amico, Carlo Mangano

Summary: This study characterized the surface topography and evaluated the biological responses of various cells to a novel 3D-printed dental implant. The surface of the implant showed a highly interconnected porous architecture and roughness, leading to good adhesion and growth of human oral osteoblasts, gingival fibroblasts, mesenchymal stem cells, and monocytes. These findings suggest that this 3D-printed implant has excellent potential for clinical applications.
