Summary: This study developed a highly sensitive method for screening Group B Streptococcus (GBS), called MALDI detection with analysis of peaks of TOF (MDAPT). The method can detect GBS directly from cultured broth, providing an alternative for GBS screening in pregnant women and contributing to the prevention of severe GBS infectious diseases in neonates.

Summary: This study reveals a strong correlation between mass spectra pattern and virulence phenotype among Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (SS2) for the first time. Machine learning-based classifiers were established and achieved an accuracy of over 90%. Overall, this study paves the way for rapid detection of virulent SS2 and provides new ideas for genotype-dependent detection of specific pathogens.

Summary: Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) is a simple, fast, and specific method used for bacterial identification, and has also been shown to be useful for identifying certain parasites and arthropod vectors. Fast, simple, and reliable methods for identifying arthropod vectors are crucial for controlling diseases transmitted by these vectors.

Summary: Managing the transmission of antimicrobial resistance requires reliable methods for tracking outbreaks. MALDI-TOF MS was compared with orthogonal approaches for strain typing, including WGS and FTIR, for Acinetobacter baumannii isolates associated with a healthcare-associated infection event. Reliable molecular typing methods can help to trace transmission routes and manage outbreaks.

Summary: The epidemiology of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) has changed over the past two decades, with the emergence of clinically relevant C. difficile strains causing severe nosocomial outbreaks. This study reports on an outbreak that occurred in a Long-term Care Unit, which was tracked using a Matrix-Assisted Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) typing approach (T-MALDI). The study also characterized the toxigenic and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of the C. difficile isolates. The results showed the presence of three different clusters, with one cluster being considered epidemic and susceptible to vancomycin and metronidazole but resistant to moxifloxacin. This is the first reported outbreak associated with a tcdA+/tcdB-/cdt+ genotypic profile. T-MALDI is shown to be a valid and rapid approach for detecting and tracking outbreaks.

Summary: This study used an ensemble of multiple preprocessing methods to extract critical information from complicated mass spectrometry spectral data for identifying microorganisms and predicting antibiotic resistance. The ensemble method outperformed individual methods, achieving the highest accuracy on independent testing datasets. Important peaks related to antibiotic resistance could be detected, providing valuable information for further investigation of the resistance mechanism.

Summary: In this study, the identification of 230 filamentous fungi isolates using MALDI-TOF MS in combination with the Filamentous Fungi Library 3.0 was investigated. The results showed that using the more time-consuming sample preparation methods improved species-level identification rates, and the in-house threshold for species identification was validated for routine use in the laboratory. This suggests that this commercial platform is suitable for routine diagnosis.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of using high energy charge remote fragmentations to analyze the N-terminus of proteins, and compares it with low energy collision-induced dissociations. The results show that the amino acid composition significantly affects the dissociation pathways of peptide backbones.
