Summary: Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare neuroendocrine carcinoma that primarily occurs in sun-exposed areas of elderly individuals. Recent research has shown that the Merkel cell polyomavirus and immunologic factors play important roles in its pathogenesis. Immunotherapy appears to hold promise as a treatment modality for Merkel cell carcinoma.

Summary: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) has two distinct etiologies, with one caused by viral DNA integration and the other by UV damage. Despite different causes, both forms of MCC have similar presentation, prognosis, and response to therapy. Oncogenic transcriptional programs, cell proliferation rates, and neuroendocrine differentiation programs play important roles in both types of MCC.

Summary: Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare but highly aggressive skin cancer. In this study, researchers found that the plasma membrane citrate transporter (pmCiC) is upregulated in Merkel cell carcinoma cell lines. Cancer cells import extracellular citrate via pmCiC to support their metabolism, which is critical for proliferation and metastasis. Inhibition of pmCiC can decrease the growth rate of Merkel cell carcinoma cell lines, suggesting that targeting pmCiC may be a potential anti-cancer therapy.

Summary: Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) is a common virus on human skin, leading to the development of a rare but aggressive Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) in older individuals, especially those with fair skin, male sex, and immunosuppression. The incidence of MCC, caused by MCPyV or UV damage, is increasing globally, with risk factors including male sex, older age, fair skin, intense UV exposure, and immunosuppression. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial for reducing MCC morbidity and mortality.

Summary: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) of the head and neck presents unique challenges in management compared to MCC in other anatomical locations. Immunotherapy has revolutionized the prognosis for MCC patients, but resistance to treatment remains a significant issue. Understanding the oncogenesis and different therapeutic options is crucial for improving outcomes in MCC patients.

Summary: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare invasive form of skin cancer characterized by nodules on the face, head, or neck. It has a high mortality rate and lacks a universal molecular signature for its pathogenesis. Variations in microRNA expression have been associated with MCC and studying their potential role beyond survival in MCC is important.

Summary: The regeneration of Merkel cells in adult skin and their origin from progenitor cells have been debated topics. Understanding Merkel cell regeneration is crucial for the study of Merkel cell carcinoma, a rare skin cancer, and its association with Merkel cell progenitors and polyomavirus. This study identified SOX9+ cells as postnatal Merkel cell progenitors and showed that they can be reprogrammed to express neuroendocrine markers by Merkel cell polyomavirus T antigens.

Summary: Penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) is a rare and aggressive tumor with dual pathogenesis. The understanding of its molecular landscape is limited, hindering the development of targeted treatment. Current studies on genetic alterations in PSCC have shown inconsistency in methodologies and limited case numbers, leading to different findings. Identified mutations and copy number alterations involve several genes and pathways. However, their relevance, role in signaling pathways, and association with HPV status remain unclear.

Summary: Retinoids and antibiotics are commonly used as topical treatments for mild to moderate acne, with irritant contact dermatitis being a common side effect. Short contact therapy (SCT) may improve local tolerability, and a gel containing tretinoin, clindamycin, and glycolic acid has shown to be effective in acne treatment. The SCT approach could potentially improve skin tolerability and adherence to treatment.

Summary: The background provides detailed information about bullous pemphigoid (BP) and its impact on patients. The objective of the study is to update the guidelines for managing this disease. The results suggest that treatment should be tailored based on the severity of BP and patients' comorbidities. High-potency topical corticosteroids are recommended as the main treatment, while the use of doxycycline and dapsone is controversial. B-cell-depleting therapy and intravenous immunoglobulins can be considered in treatment-resistant cases. The final version of the guideline received consent from several patient organizations.
