A retrospective study of using removable occlusal splint in the treatment of condylar fracture in children

Background: Although the concept of conservative treatment for paediatric condylar fracture is well understood, there is still a lack of a recognized method for treating child patients with a condylar fracture. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the removable occlusal splint in treating condylar fractures in children and adolescents. Materials and methods: Forty children and adolescents with condylar fracture, aged 3-16, were included in this study. A removable occlusal splint with varying thickness was fabricated according to the age, developmental stage of the mandible, and degree of condylar dislocation. This was worn for 1-3 months, accompanied by functional exercises. Follow-up was carried out by clinical observation and panoramic X-ray. Results: Clinically satisfactory results with good occlusion were obtained in all the patients, along with unimpaired function and normal growth and development of the mandible. The panoramic image showed remodelling and reconstruction of the fractured condyles. Conclusions: Our results confirm that conservative treatment has a satisfactory clinical outcome in treating condylar fracture in children. The removable occlusal splint is a promising approach for treating condylar fracture in children and adolescents. (C) 2014 European Association for Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery. Collapse arrest in a two-dimensional Airy Gaussian beam and Airy Gaussian vortex beam in nonlocal nonlinear media

Summary: The propagation dynamics of two-dimensional Airy Gaussian beams and Airy Gaussian vortex beams in local and nonlocal nonlinear media were investigated numerically. The self-healing and collapse of the beams depend on the distribution factor b and the topological charge m. By utilizing nonlocality, stable Airy Gaussian beams and Airy Gaussian vortex beams with larger amplitudes can be obtained, which always collapse in local nonlinear media. When the distribution factor b is large enough, the Airy Gaussian vortex beam will transform into quasi-vortex solitons in nonlocal nonlinear media.

Predictive Factors Affecting Metastasis of Small Renal Mass and Its Prognostic Analysis

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and pathological characteristics of small renal mass (SRM) and identify the risk factors that influence its metastasis and prognosis. The findings suggest that age, clinical symptoms, pathological nuclear grade, and lymphatic invasion are risk factors for distant metastasis of SRM. In terms of prognosis, older age, poor preoperative renal function, pathological vascular invasion, and metastasis are associated with worse overall survival (OS) in SRM patients.

Subcutaneous implantation of SHEDs/SMS induces vessel-rich pulp-like tissue regeneration, highlighting the potential for clinical application in endodontic regenerative dentistry.

Nomogram for predicting survival of renal cell carcinoma with tumor thrombus based on perioperative clinicopathological factors from a Chinese high-volume center

Summary: This study investigated perioperative clinicopathological predictors and established a predictive nomogram for survival in patients with renal cell carcinoma and venous tumor thrombus undergoing nephrectomy and thrombectomy. The results showed that hemoglobin level, sarcomatoid feature, perirenal fat invasion, histological subtype, and metastasis at surgery were independently associated with overall survival. They developed a predictive nomogram that had a good predictive performance.

The RNA binding protein OsLa influences grain and anther development in rice

Secondhand smoking exposure and quality of life among pregnant and postnatal women: a network approach

Summary: This study examined the prevalence of exposure to secondhand smoke among pregnant and postnatal Chinese women and its association with quality of life. The findings showed a decrease in the prevalence of secondhand smoke exposure compared to previous studies. Factors related to exposure included age, residence, education level, and trimester. The study also found significant links between secondhand smoke exposure and various aspects of quality of life.

Decoding the multicellular ecosystem of vena caval tumor thrombus in clear cell renal cell carcinoma by single-cell RNA sequencing

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms involved in tumor thrombus formation in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). The results show that tumor thrombus is marked by the presence of CD8(+) T cells with an exhausted phenotype and enhanced remodeling of the extracellular matrix. In contrast, proinflammatory states and increased expression of immunosuppressive markers are found in macrophages and malignant cells from primary tumors. The interactions between tumor and stroma reshape the extracellular matrix in tumor thrombus, which is associated with poor survival.

Gravity-driven membrane filtration of primary wastewater effluent for edible plant cultivations: Membrane performance and health risk assessment

Irrigating vegetables with GDM permeate has minimal impact on plant growth and heavy metal contents in soils compared to using tap water.
