We adopt a covariant formalism to derive exact evolution equations for nonlinear perturbations, in a universe dominated by two scalar fields. These scalar fields are characterized by non-canonical kinetic terms and an arbitrary field space metric, a situation typically encountered in inflationary models inspired by string theory. We decompose the nonlinear scalar perturbations into adiabatic and entropy modes, generalizing the definition adopted in the linear theory, and we derive the corresponding exact evolution equations. We also obtain a nonlinear generalization of the curvature perturbation on uniform density hypersurfaces, showing that on large scales it is sourced only by the nonlinear version of the entropy perturbation. We then expand these equations to second order in the perturbations, using a coordinate based formalism. Our results are relatively compact and elegant and enable one to identify the new effects coming from the non-canonical structure of the scalar fields Lagrangian. We also explain how to analyze, in our formalism, the interesting scenario of multi-field Dirac-Born-Infeld inflation.

Gravitational-wave cosmological distances in scalar-tensor theories of gravity

Gianmassimo Tasinato, Alice Garoffolo, Daniele Bertacca, Sabino Matarrese

Summary: The propagation of high-frequency gravitational waves in scalar-tensor theories of gravity was analyzed to examine properties of cosmological distances inferred from GW measurements. The study found modifications in both the luminosity and angular distances for GW as compared to General Relativity, with implications for gravitational lensing and time-delays between lensed GW and photons in multimessenger events. The Etherington reciprocity law was proven valid for a perturbed universe within a scalar-tensor framework, showing that lensed GW and their lensed electromagnetic counterparts arrive simultaneously, in line with causality constraints.

CMB μT cross correlations as a probe of primordial black hole scenarios

Ogan Ozsoy, Gianmassimo Tasinato

Summary: This study proposes a new method to probe inflationary models of primordial black hole (PBH) production by analyzing the characteristics of the primordial power spectrum profile, specifically focusing on the dip and surrounding scales. The research shows that the properties of PBH scenarios can be quantitatively studied by cross correlating CMB mu-distortions and temperature fluctuations, which may be tested in the next generation of CMB experiments.

Detecting dark energy fluctuations with gravitational waves

Summary: In models of dynamical dark energy and gravity beyond the standard cosmological scenario, estimates of luminosity distance from electromagnetic and gravitational wave sources differ, leaving a unique imprint on the angular power-spectrum of fluctuations. By exploiting the synergy in supernovae and gravitational wave distance measurements, a joint estimator has been constructed to directly probe dark energy fluctuations, providing conclusive evidence for their existence. Additionally, this measurement can also allow for probing the running of the Planck mass, with experimental requirements discussed for detecting these signals.

Analytic approach to non-slow-roll inflation

Gianmassimo Tasinato

Summary: The study found that introducing brief periods of nonattractor evolution in cosmological inflation can generate primordial black holes and enhance the spectrum of gravitational waves. For a single epoch of slow-roll violation, the steepest slope of the spectrum has a spectral index n(s) - 1 = 4, while multiple phases of violation result in an enhanced slope.
