A novel ceramic adsorbent was developed to adsorb ammonium from high concentration ammonium contaminated wastewater. Typical gardening cultivation mediums in Japan-Kanuma clay and Akadama clay were used to synthesize the ceramic adsorbent. Static batch experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of various parameters such as contact time, initial ammonium concentration, adsorbent dosage, and competing cations during the ammonium adsorption process. The results revealed that the Freundlich isotherm model fitted better with the adsorption process than the Langmuir model, and the adsorption process was well described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum nitrogen adsorption capacity of the ceramic adsorbent was 75.5 mg g(-1) at an initial NH4+-N concentration of 10,000 mg L-1, dosage of 20 g L-1, and contact time of 480 min. Results demonstrated that the low-cost ceramic adsorbent directly used as nitrogen fertilizer was feasible for its high ammonium nitrogen content, nontoxic effect on the environment and excellent soil properties. A review and evaluation of nonroad diesel mobile machinery emission control in China

Summary: China’s emission control for nonroad diesel mobile machinery (NDMM) faces challenges of rapid stock increase and outdated regulations. This study provides a comprehensive review and evaluation of China’s NDMM policies, along with emission measurements and investigation on diesel fuel quality. The shift from China II to China IV standards greatly improved the control of NOx and PM emissions, but non-type-approved engines still exceeded the limits. The policies on new and in-use NDMM, as well as diesel fuel quality, contributed to reducing NOx and PM emissions and enhancing the competitiveness of China’s NDMM industries.

Thoracic perivascular adipose tissue inhibits VSMC apoptosis and aortic aneurysm formation in mice via the secretome of browning adipocytes

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that the differences in perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) between regions of the aorta are implicated in the development of atherosclerosis. This study investigated the effect of thoracic PVAT (T-PVAT) transplantation on aortic aneurysm formation and its impact on vascular smooth muscle cells. The findings showed that T-PVAT displayed a BAT-like phenotype and transplantation of T-PVAT attenuated abdominal aortic dilation and preserved smooth muscle cell content. The anti-apoptosis effect of T-PVAT on vascular smooth muscle cells may be attributed to the secretome of browning adipocytes.

Integrated metagenomic and metabolomic analysis reveals distinct gut-microbiome-derived phenotypes in early-onset colorectal cancer

The study identified potential biomarkers for EO-CRC and achieved a powerful classification performance for distinguishing EO-CRC from controls. This research provides valuable insights into the pathogenesis of EO-CRC and highlights the potential of microbiome-derived biomarkers for non-invasive detection.

Epidemiological study of calcified aortic valve stenosis in a Chinese community population

Summary: Due to the ageing global population, calcified aortic valve disease is currently the most common cardiac valve disorder. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and risk factors for calcified aortic valve stenosis (CAVS) and develop a prediction model for CAVS risk. The results revealed that age, pulse pressure, HbA1c, lower-level HDL-C, lipoprotein(a), and uric acid were independent risk factors for CAVS.

The role of the parahippocampal cortex in landmark-based distance estimation based on the contextual hypothesis

Summary: Parahippocampal cortex (PHC) plays a vital role in spatial navigation by processing the spatial association between landmarks and destinations. This study provides evidence supporting the contextual hypothesis, showing that the PHC is activated by strongly associated contexts and encodes landmark references for distance perception. The PHC also sustains contextual information for discriminating between scenes.

Summary: Using 7.33 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) collision data, collected by the BESIII detector, at c.m. energies between 4.128 GeV and 4.226 GeV, the decay D-s(+/-) -> omega pi(+/-)eta is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of 7.6 sigma. The measured branching fraction for this decay is (0.54 +/- 0.12 +/- 0.04)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

In situ growth of lignin-based graphene-like films catalyzed by metal substrates

Summary: This study reported a simple and relatively low-temperature method to produce lignin-based graphene-like carbon materials. A lignin-based graphene-like film with micron thickness was successfully prepared by carbonization at a relatively low temperature using alkali lignin as a solid carbon source and metal Ni sheets as a catalyst. The research further explained the structural changes of alkali lignin and the growth process of the crystal nucleus through characterization studies of the obtained products at different temperatures. The process converted biomass resource into high value-added carbon material products, alleviating the current problems of energy consumption and climate pollution.

ZoomNAS: Searching for Whole-Body Human Pose Estimation in the Wild

Summary: This paper investigates the task of 2D whole-body human pose estimation and proposes the ZoomNet approach to localize dense landmarks on the entire human body. The ZoomNet approach considers the hierarchical structure and scale variation of different body parts. The authors also propose the ZoomNAS framework for neural architecture search to improve the accuracy and efficiency of whole-body pose estimation.

Synthesis of Hydrogels and Their Progress in Environmental Remediation and Antimicrobial Application

Summary: This paper reviews the wide application prospect of hydrogel as an efficient adsorptive material within different fields, thanks to its unique 3D network structures composed of polymers. The different synthetic strategies, crosslinking methods and their corresponding limitations and outstanding contributions in the fields of removing environmental pollutants are discussed, along with the prospective view of their applications in water resources sustainability. Furthermore, the applications within the biomedical field, especially in wound dressing, are also reviewed in this paper, mainly focusing on their unique water retention ability, antibacterial ability, and good biocompatibility. Finally, the development direction of hydrogels in the fields of environmental remediation and biomedicine are summarized and prospected.

Mechanistic exploration of Co doping in optimizing the electrochemical performance of 2H-MoS2/N-doped carbon anode for potassium-ion battery

Summary: In this study, the influence of transition metal doping on the electronic and mechanical properties and electrochemical performance of 2HMoS2/NC was investigated using Cobalt (Co) as an example. Co doping was found to effectively improve the electronic conductivity and active site areas of 2H-MoS2/NC at different positions, optimizing the adsorption and diffusion capability of potassium ions. Furthermore, the study revealed the optimal roles of different types of nitrogen atoms in kinetic adsorption, diffusion, and interfacial stability of potassium ions. These findings provide guidance for the experimental design of high rate 2H-MoS2/NC electrode materials and the optimal design of other functional composite materials.

The incorporation of thiophenedicarboxaldehyde (TAL) through copolymerization significantly improves the photocatalytic activity of carbon nitride (CN) while maintaining its photostability performance. The optimized composition allows efficient isolation of photoinduced charge carriers and enhanced charge transport, resulting in a remarkable increase in overall photocatalytic efficiency.

Polyamide nanofiltration membranes by vacuum-assisted interfacial polymerization: Broad universality of Substrate, wide window of monomer concentration and high reproducibility of performance

Summary: This study demonstrates the advantages of vacuum-assisted interfacial polymerization (VAIP) in fabricating polyimide nanofiltration membranes. By using vacuum filtration, aqueous solutions of PIP can be evenly distributed on different microfiltration substrates, leading to the fabrication of uniform and ultra-thin polyamide layers with excellent performance. The membranes exhibit high rejection rates and water permeance, as well as satisfactory long-term stability.

Multi-layering of carbon conductivity enhancers for boosting rapid recharging performance of high mass loading lithium ion battery electrodes

Summary: This research developed an effective approach to enhance the charging rates of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) by strategically incorporating carbon nanotube (CNT) conductivity boosters into Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) electrodes. Multi-layer architectures comprising CNT-rich and CNT-free LTO electrode layers were manufactured using a layer-by-layer spray coating method to promote charge transfer kinetics of high mass loading electrodes. The best performing multi-layer was paired with a spray-coated LiFePO4 (LFP) positive electrode, resulting in attractive power performance that outperformed conventional LTO || LFP combinations.

Surfactant-free microemulsions (SFMEs) as a template for porous polymer synthesis

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between the morphology of PMMA monopolymers and PMMA-PHEMA copolymers with the expected nature of surfactant-free microemulsions (SFMEs) before polymerization. It is found that previously mesostructured, surfactant-free mixtures can produce porous polymers of different morphologies, while unstructured, oil-rich regions lead to solid, transparent polymers without nanostructured morphologies. Additionally, a surfactant-based reference system shows similar phase behavior and polymer morphologies as the comparable surfactant-free system, indicating the importance of the hydrotropic behavior of HEMA in this system.
