Coronally advanced flap versus connective tissue graft in the treatment of multiple gingival recessions: a split-mouth study with a 5-year follow-up

P>Aim The aim of this long-term study was to compare the clinical outcomes of coronally advanced flap (CAF) alone versus coronally advanced flap plus connective tissue graft (CAF+CTG) in the treatment of multiple gingival recessions using a split-mouth design over 5 years of follow-up. Materials and Methods A total of 13 patients (mean age 31.4 years) showing multiple bilateral gingival recessions were treated. On one side, CAF+CTG was used, while in the contra-lateral side, a CAF alone was applied. Clinical outcomes were evaluated at the 6-month, 1-year and 5-year follow-ups. Results A total of 93 Miller class I, II and III gingival recessions were treated. In the CAF+CTG-treated sites, the baseline gingival recession was 3.6 +/- 1.3 mm, while in the CAF-treated sites, it was 2.9 +/- 1.3 mm (p=0.0034). No difference in terms of the number of sites with complete root coverage (CRC) was reported (OR=0.49, p=0.1772) at the 6-month follow-up. At the 5-year follow-up, CAF+CTG-treated sites showed a higher percentage of sites with CRC (52%) than CAF-treated sites (35%) (OR=3.94; p=0.0239). An apical relapse of the gingival margin in CAF-treated sites was observed while a coronal improvement of the margin was noted in CAF+CTG-treated sites between the 6-month and the 5-year follow-ups. Conclusions CAF+CTG provided better CRC than CAF alone in the treatment of multiple gingival recessions at the 5-year follow-up.

Summary: There is currently limited evidence on the effectiveness of surface disinfection and protective masks in reducing the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses in dental practice. Although 70% ethanol and 0.5% sodium hypochlorite seem to be effective in reducing infectivity, there is still a lack of sufficient evidence. The consistent use of respirators and routine surface disinfection is strongly recommended in dental practice, but further research is urgently needed to evaluate specific protection protocols for dental healthcare workers.

Post-pubertal effects of the Alt-RAMEC/FM and RME/FM protocols for the early treatment of Class III malocclusion: a retrospective controlled study

Summary: This study assessed the stability of the effects of the Alt-RAMEC and facial mask protocol at a post-pubertal observation. The results showed that the Alt-RAMEC/FM protocol produced favorable effects compared to the control group. There were no significant differences between the outcomes of the Alt-RAMEC/FM and RME/FM protocols at the post-pubertal or short-term observations.

Intra- and Interexaminer Repeatability of Diagnostic Peri Implant Clinical Measurement: A Pilot Study

The results showed that gingival index had higher variability compared to probing depth and recession. Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the mandibular anterior repositioning appliance (MARA) on skeletal, dentoalveolar, and airway dimensions in Class II malocclusion. The results showed that MARA was able to effectively improve Wits index, ANB angle, and dentoskeletal relationships in Class II malocclusion, but did not produce significant changes in sagittal airway dimensions.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the dento-skeletal effects produced by the use or non-use of skeletal anchorage for the treatment of Class III malocclusion in growing patients. The results showed that the use of skeletally anchored facemask resulted in a significant increase in the SNA angle and a reduced inclination of maxillary incisors compared to dental-anchored facemask, although the clinical significance was not significant. However, there were greater risks of complications with skeletally anchored facemask.

Identifying crosstalk genetic biomarkers linking a neurodegenerative disease, Parkinson's disease, and periodontitis using integrated bioinformatics analyses

Summary: This study aimed to identify the genetic linkage mechanisms between Parkinson's disease (PD) and periodontitis, and explore the role of immunology in the crosstalk between the two diseases. Gene expression analysis and clustering analysis were performed to identify crosstalk genes and inflammatory response-related genes (IRRGs). Five hub crosstalk genes were identified and showed significant correlation with hub IRRGs. Furthermore, immune infiltration analysis indicated the enrichment of immune cells in both diseases and their correlation with hub crosstalk genes. The findings suggest the importance of immunology in linking PD and periodontitis.

Comparison of rapid versus slow maxillary expansion on patient-reported outcome measures in growing patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis compared patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) between rapid maxillary expansion (RME) and slow maxillary expansion (SME) in growing patients. Results showed that pain intensity was significantly lower in the SME group during the first week of treatment, but there were no differences in pain between the two protocols in the following weeks. There were also no significant differences between the two groups in other indicators.

Both in vivo and in vitro studies from laboratories and hospitals have confirmed the presence of surface contamination and the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in the air, especially in poorly ventilated indoor settings where aerosol-generating procedures take place.
