Seagrass colonization changes the chemistry and biogeochemical cycles mediated by microbes in coastal sediments. In this study, we molecularly characterized the diazotrophic assemblages and entire bacterial community in surface sediments of a Zostera marina-colonized coastal lagoon in northern China. Higher nitrogenase gene (nifH) copy numbers were detected in the sediments from the vegetated region than in the sediments from the unvegetated region nearby. The nifH phylotypes detected were mostly affiliated with the Geobacteraceae, Desulfobulbus, Desulfocapsa, and Pseudomonas. Redundancy analysis based on terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis showed that the distribution of nifH genotypes was mostly shaped by the ratio of total organic carbon to total organic nitrogen, the concentration of cadmium in the sediments, and the pH of the overlying water. High-throughput sequencing and phylogenetic analyses of bacterial 16S rRNA genes also indicated the presence of Geobacteraceae and Desulfobulbaceae phylotypes in these samples. A comparison of these results with those of previous studies suggests the prevalence and predominance of iron(III)-reducing Geobacteraceae and sulfate-reducing Desulfobulbaceae diazotrophs in coastal sedimentary environments. Although the entire bacterial community structure was not significantly different between these two niches, Desulfococcus (Deltaproteobacteria) and Anaerolineae (Chloroflexi) presented with much higher proportions in the vegetated sediments, and Flavobacteriaceae (Bacteroidetes) occurred more frequently in the bare sediments. These data suggest that the high bioavailability of organic matter (indicated by relatively lower carbon-to-nitrogen ratios) and the less-reducing anaerobic condition in vegetated sediments may favor Desulfococcus and Anaerolineae lineages, which are potentially important populations in benthic carbon and sulfur cycling in the highly productive seagrass ecosystem.

First report of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in coral tissues and the surrounding air-seawater system from the South China Sea: Distribution, source, and environmental fate

Yaru Kang, Ruijie Zhang, Kefu Yu, Minwei Han, Yinghui Wang, Xueyong Huang, Ruixuan Wang, Fang Liu

Summary: This study elucidated the levels, fate, and potential sources of 22 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in coral tissues and the surrounding air-seawater system from the South China Sea (SCS) for the first time. The atmospheric OCPs were mainly influenced by continental air mass origins, while coastal seawater had relatively higher concentrations of OCPs, possibly due to coastal pollution inputs. Corals exhibited a migration pattern of OCPs from atmosphere to ocean, with higher bioaccumulation ability for OCPs compared to other sources in the SCS.

Effects of Magnetic Minerals Exposure and Microbial Responses in Surface Sediment across the Bohai Sea

Lei Chen, Mingpeng Wang, Yuntao Li, Weitao Shang, Jianhui Tang, Zhaojie Zhang, Fanghua Liu

Summary: Extensive production and application of magnetic minerals introduce magnetic wastes into the environment, which can affect microbial community composition and geographic distribution. This study found that magnetic susceptibility is involved in determining bacterial alpha-diversity and community composition in surface sediment. Environmental factors play a larger role than spatial variables in shaping the bacterial community composition.

Diversity and distribution of bacterioplankton in the coastal upwelling waters off Hainan Island, China

Fahui Gong, Qixing Ji, Guihao Li, Kedong Yin, Jun Gong

Summary: This study investigated the diversity, community composition, and abundance of bacterioplankton in the Qiongdong upwelling area off the eastern coast of Hainan Island using high throughput sequencing and quantitative PCR. The results showed that nearshore stations had higher bacterial gene abundance and operational taxonomic unit richness compared to offshore stations, indicating the influence of upwelled and fresher waters. The bacterial community structure was significantly affected by salinity, dissolved oxygen, and NO3, which also determined the physicochemical features of the upwelled waters. The abundance of certain bacterial taxa decreased from the inner to outer shelves and slope, while others exhibited an opposite trend.

Historical Review of Studies on Cyrtophorian Ciliates (Ciliophora, Cyrtophoria) from China

Zhishuai Qu, Hongbo Pan, Jun Gong, Congcong Wang, Sabine Filker, Xiaozhong Hu

Summary: In this study, we review the taxonomy, phylogeny, and ecology of cyrtophorian ciliates in China, providing a comprehensive understanding of their classification and evolutionary history. We provide a species checklist, an illustrated identification key, and molecular data for the study of phylogeny. Our findings suggest that the separation of the stomatogenesis zone from the left kineties is a key evolutionary event in cyrtophorian ciliates, leading to the formation of an independent sexual organelle.

Quantifying relative contributions of biotic interactions to bacterial diversity and community assembly by using community characteristics of microbial eukaryotes

Guihao Li, Yaping Wang, Han Li, Xiaoli Zhang, Jun Gong

Summary: Biotic interactions play a major role in microbial diversity, but they have not been adequately quantified, leading to unexplained residual variation in microbial biogeographic studies. In this study, a holistic approach was proposed to understand the importance of inter-domain interactions in shaping microbial diversity by considering community-level characteristics. The research found that eukaryotic characteristics were better predictors of bacterial diversity indices and community structure compared to environmental and spatial variables alone. The study also highlighted the significance of non-grazing interacting processes in shaping bacterial diversity and community assembly.

Dynamics of Benthic Nitrate Reduction Pathways and Associated Microbial Communities Responding to the Development of Seasonal Deoxygenation in a Coastal Mariculture Zone

Xiaoli Zhang, Cheng Yao, Bosong Zhang, Wenwen Tan, Jun Gong, Guang-yu Wang, Jianmin Zhao, Xianbiao Lin

Summary: Intensive mariculture activities can lead to eutrophication and coastal deoxygenation. This study investigated the role of sediment nitrate reduction pathways and microbial communities in seasonal deoxygenation in a coastal aquaculture zone. The results showed that denitrification was the dominant nitrate reduction process, and both denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium were enhanced during summer deoxygenation. The abundance of the nitrous oxide reductase gene nosZ increased during deoxygenation, with Azospirillum and Ruegeria being the main contributors. Effective management measures are needed to prevent further exacerbation of coastal deoxygenation and maintain sustainable mariculture.
