Purpose To our knowledge, this is the first study exploring the association of childhood non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) with serum adiponectin and leptin levels in a nationwide case-control series. In addition, expression of adiponectin receptors in NHL specimens was assessed, and the association between adipokines and childhood NHL survival and prognosis was examined. Patients and Methods We studied 121 incident childhood (0 to 14 years) NHL cases registered in the Nationwide Registry for Childhood Hematological Malignancies (1996 to 2006) and an equal number of matched controls, for whom sociodemographic, lifestyle, prenatal characteristics, and fasting blood serums were collected. Serum adiponectin and leptin levels were determined. Immunohistochemisty for adiponectin receptors expression was performed on commercially available adult NHL specimens (n = 30) and in a subset of childhood NHL cases (n = 6) that were available. Summary statistics, multiple conditional logistic regression analyses, and survival analysis were performed. Results Higher serum adiponectin, but not leptin, levels were independently associated with childhood NHL (odds ratio, 1.82; 95% CI, 1.30 to 2.56), after adjusting for obesity and established risk factors. Higher adiponectin levels at diagnosis were positively associated with relapse and poor survival, but hormone levels did not differ among NHL subtypes. Adiponectin receptors 1 and 2 were present in 90% and 57% of adult samples and in 83% and 100% of childhood NHL samples, respectively. Conclusion Elevated serum adiponectin, but not leptin, levels are independently associated with childhood NHL and poor prognosis. Adiponectin receptors are expressed in NHL, suggesting that adiponectin may represent not only a potential clinically significant diagnostic and prognostic marker but also a molecule that may be implicated in NHL pathogenesis.

Summary: The purpose of this literature review is to investigate the possible connection between specific food difficulties and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during the first two years of life. A total of 21 studies (3763 infants and children) were analyzed, and the results suggest a link between ASD and difficulties during breastfeeding, breast milk refusal, and avoidance of solid foods. Infants with ASD have been identified as picky eaters, and problematic mealtime behavior during infancy has also been associated with ASD. Overall, this review highlights the association between food difficulties, including problematic mealtime behaviors, food selectivity, breastfeeding difficulties, and food refusal, during early life and ASD.

Kyriaki Tsiroukidou, Eleni G. G. Paschalidou, Maria G. G. Grammatikopoulou, John Androulakis, Anastasios Vamvakis, Kalliopi K. K. Gkouskou, Christos Tzimos, Theodoros N. N. Sergentanis, Tonia Vassilakou, Emmanuel Roilides, Dimitrios P. P. Bogdanos, Dimitrios G. G. Goulis

Summary: The International Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) recommends the use of metformin (MET) for metabolic disturbances and hyperglycemia in children and adolescents. However, a potential concern of MET therapy is vitamin B-12 deficiency, which has mainly been observed in studies conducted on adults. In this case-control study, it was found that children and adolescents on MET therapy had suboptimal intake of vitamin B-12 and may experience synergistic reduction in circulating vitamin B-12 concentrations when paired with MET. Therefore, caution is needed when prescribing MET for this age group and vitamin B-12 replacement may be necessary.

Body Composition, Eating Habits, and Disordered Eating Behaviors among Adolescent Classical Ballet Dancers and Controls

Panagiota Chaikali, Ioanna Kontele, Maria G. Grammatikopoulou, Eleftheria Oikonomou, Theodoros N. Sergentanis, Tonia Vassilakou

Summary: Adolescent classical ballet dancers are at risk of nutritional vulnerability due to their need to maintain a lean body shape during a period of rapid growth. Research on adult dancers has shown a high risk of disordered eating behaviors (DEBs), but there is limited research on adolescent dancers. This study compared body composition, dietary habits, and DEBs between female adolescent classical ballet dancers and their non-dancer peers. Results showed that the dancers had lower weight, BMIs, and body circumferences, along with leaner skinfolds and less fat mass compared to the controls. However, no significant differences were found in eating habits and DEB scores between the two groups, although 23.3% of participants scored >= 20 on the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26), indicating the presence of DEBs.

Food Allergies and Quality of Life among School-Aged Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review

Artemis-Eirini Drakouli, Ioanna Kontele, Dimitrios Poulimeneas, Stella Saripanagiotou, Maria G. Grammatikopoulou, Theodoros N. Sergentanis, Tonia Vassilakou

Summary: Recently, there has been an increased focus on the psychosocial aspects of food allergy (FA) in addition to medical diagnosis and treatment. This systematic review examined the scientific evidence on Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) among children and adolescents with FAs from January 2015 to April 2022. The review included 28 research studies from three databases and found that most children and adolescents with FAs had average levels of HRQoL, with girls and older children experiencing more negative impacts. Few studies compared HRQoL between children with FA and healthy children, but some showed worse HRQoL for children with FAs. Immunotherapy was found to improve the QoL of children with FAs, while factors such as anaphylaxis history and severity of symptoms negatively impacted QoL. More comparative studies are needed to improve the QoL of children with FAs.
