Distinct profiles of multiple co-occurring symptoms in patients with gastrointestinal cancers receiving chemotherapy

Yufen Lin, Donald E. Bailey, Sharron L. Docherty, Laura S. Porter, Bruce A. Cooper, Steven M. Paul, Kord M. Kober, Marilyn J. Hammer, Fay Wright, Laura B. Dunn, Yvette P. Conley, Jon D. Levine, Christine Miaskowski

Summary: This study aimed to identify subgroups of gastrointestinal cancer patients with distinct symptom profiles, evaluate differences in demographic and clinical characteristics, and quality of life outcomes among these subgroups. The findings suggest that younger age, depression, and back pain may be associated with different symptom burden in these subgroups, with a higher symptom burden leading to poorer quality of life outcomes.

Self-management interventions in systemic sclerosis: A systematic review

Robyn K. Wojeck, Donald E. Bailey, Tamara J. Somers, Mitchell R. Knisely

Summary: This systematic review aimed to identify and describe self-management interventions and their impact on self-management outcomes in adults with systemic sclerosis. The included studies showed notable variability in the types of interventions and their effects, with a focus on improving physical function through rehabilitation programs. However, the poor methodological quality of the studies limited the synthesis and recommendations for self-management interventions in this population, highlighting the need for future research with larger, more rigorously designed studies.

Pain and Self-Efficacy Among Patients With Systemic Sclerosis A Scleroderma Patient-Centered Intervention Network Cohort Study

Robyn K. Wojeck, Susan G. Silva, Donald E. Bailey, Mitchell R. Knisely, Linda Kwakkenbos, Marie-Eve Carrier, Warren R. Nielson, Susan J. Bartlett, Janet Pope, Brett D. Thombs

Summary: This study found associations between self-efficacy and pain in patients with systemic sclerosis, but self-efficacy did not mediate changes in pain trajectories. Factors such as age, gender, finger ulcers, small joint contractures, and esophageal gastrointestinal symptoms were related to pain outcomes.

Distinct morning and evening fatigue profiles in gastrointestinal cancer during chemotherapy

Yufen Lin, Donald E. Bailey, Sharron L. Docherty, Laura S. Porter, Bruce Cooper, Steven Paul, Kord Kober, Marilyn J. Hammer, Fay Wright, Yvette Conley, Jon Levine, Christine Miaskowski

Summary: This study identified distinct morning and evening fatigue profiles in patients with gastrointestinal cancers, and found that factors such as age, performance status, and depression were common risk factors for both types of fatigue. Women, white individuals, and those with childcare responsibilities were more likely to experience higher levels of evening fatigue. Patients with very high levels of morning and evening fatigue reported higher levels of anxiety, depressive symptoms, and poorer quality of life. These findings can help clinicians identify high-risk patients and develop personalized interventions for fatigue and other symptoms.

Using Technology to Measure Older Adults' Social Networks for Health and Well-Being: A Scoping Review

Sijia Wei, Bada Kang, Donald E. Bailey, Kevin Caves, Yufen Lin, Eleanor S. McConnell, Maria Thurow, Amanda Woodward, Kayla Wright-Freeman, Tingzhong (Michelle) Xue, Kirsten N. Corazzini

Summary: This scoping review examines the use of technology in measuring older adults' social networks for health and social care. Results suggest that technology facilitates data collection on the social interactions and activities of older adults, but its use in measuring social networks is still in an exploratory phase. Multidisciplinary collaborations are needed to overcome challenges in implementation and analysis. Future studies should leverage technology to address social isolation and care for older adults, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Qualitative Study of the Experiences of Living With Multiple Myeloma

Matthew R. LeBlanc, Thomas W. LeBlanc, Ashley Leak Bryant, Kathryn Pollak, Donald E. Bailey, Sophia K. Smith

Summary: This study aimed to explore the impact of multiple myeloma on individuals' lives in terms of treatment, including social, financial, and relationship issues. The findings suggest that the treatment journey for those with multiple myeloma can be lifelong, with far-reaching and long-term effects. Nurses play a key role in mitigating the negative effects of multiple myeloma and its treatment by providing thorough assessment, care planning, and education.
