Summary: At the end of the 1950s, Pierre Wertheimer established the Pierre Wertheimer Neurological and Neurosurgical Hospital in Lyon, which served as a center for neuroscience, combining hospital and training facilities. The hospital's structure focused on spatial unity, specialized fields, a large patient population, structured training, and cross-communication between areas. The hospital made significant contributions to functional neurosurgery, pain surgery, physiology, epilepsy surgery, and spasticity surgery, fostering collaboration between different teams and laying the groundwork for a neuroscientific doctoral school.

Summary: Significant advancements in the treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI) were developed in military conflicts, improving outcomes for soldiers and civilians. Modern military SCIs resulting from blast mechanisms are different from traumatic SCIs sustained by civilians, and new forms of war and weapons have influenced the rise in SCIs among causes of casualties and wounds.

Summary: Physical rehabilitation is crucial for improving muscle elasticity, joint mobility, and nerve health in patients with spinal cord injury. It can also help in relieving pain and enhancing cardiopulmonary fitness. The psychological state of the patient plays a significant role in the success of rehabilitation and treatment outcomes.

Summary: Gender disparity in academic neuroscience, particularly in neurosurgery, neurology, and psychiatry, is evident based on this review. The percentage of female authors and their role as the last author varies across different specialties. The reasons behind this gender disparity in clinical neuroscience should be addressed considering cultural and historical factors.

Summary: This study assesses the prognostic value of routinely measured blood biomarkers in SCI patients by developing models for AIS scores at discharge and 12 months post-injury. Results show that blood measures associated with liver function and components of a total blood count can improve predictions of neurological outcomes, supporting the idea that routine blood measures are valuable in predicting SCI outcomes, particularly markers of liver function.

Summary: This study found a correlation between serum procalcitonin (PCT) levels and sepsis in spinal cord injury (SCI) patients, suggesting that PCT may be a reliable indicator for better prognosis and earlier diagnosis compared to other common biomarkers such as C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), white blood cells (WBC), blood culture, and body temperature.

Summary: Inconsistent measurement and reporting in degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) research hinder progress, highlighting the need for a core measurement set (CMS). This protocol outlines the steps for developing the CMS, including identifying constructs to be measured, conducting systematic reviews to identify measurement tools, and selecting the instruments through a consensus meeting. The CMS implementation guidance will be developed following instrument selection.

Summary: Spinal cord injury (SCI) and spinal cord tumor cause significant damage to the spinal cord, leading to multiple impairments and high morbidity and mortality. The treatment options for these conditions are limited and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In the review, the role of inflammasomes in SCI and spinal cord tumors is highlighted, and targeting inflammasomes is suggested as a potential therapeutic strategy.

Summary: The study focused on investigating the restoration of motor function following spinal cord injury through transplanting a vascularized pedicle of hemisected spinal cord to bridge the transected spinal cord. Results showed that electrical continuity was restored, leading to motor function recovery, supporting the potential effectiveness of similar operative techniques in treating SCI patients previously considered to have irreversible damage or paralysis.

Summary: This study tested spinal cord fusion (SCF) using the neuroprotective agent polyethylene glycol (PEG) in different animal models and developed a new clinical procedure called vascular pedicle hemisected spinal cord transplantation (vSCT) for the treatment of paraplegic patients. The results demonstrated the feasibility and efficacy of vSCT in re-establishing the continuity of spinal nerve fibers, potentially restoring motor, sensory, and autonomic nervous functions in paraplegic patients. Further clinical trials are needed to validate these findings.

Summary: This study aimed to identify predictors of 90-day mortality in acute ischemic stroke patients treated with mechanical thrombectomy. The results showed that symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage, high post-thrombectomy NIHSS score, high NIHSS score on admission, and high glucose level at hospital arrival were significant independent predictors of mortality. Smoking may also be associated with mortality, but further research is needed to confirm this.

Summary: This study systematically reviews models that aim to provide patient-specific predictions of pre-treatment rebleeding risk in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. The reported discriminative performance of the models varied, and no model showed consistently low bias risk and clinical applicability in all domains. Only one model was formulated using a patient cohort that underwent contemporary, evidence-based aneurysm treatment practices, but this model lacked calibration or clinical utility.
