Summary: This study aimed to assess the volatile organic compound (VOC) profiles of ampicillin-resistant and -susceptible Escherichia coli and found that resistant strains exhibited distinct VOC profiles compared to susceptible strains, indicating fundamental differences in their metabolisms. The results suggest that machine-learning models using VOC signatures may have diagnostic applicability for the rapid detection of antimicrobial resistance.

Summary: The rapid determination of beta-lactamase presence in H. influenzae isolates was achieved through indirect detection of degradation ampicillin products using MALDI-TOF MS. This method can distinguish resistant and susceptible strains and accelerate the identification of beta-lactamase-producing strains in clinical microbiology.

Summary: A rapid and accurate LC-MS/MS assay was developed for detecting aminoglycoside resistance mechanisms in E. coli and K. pneumoniae, allowing for prediction of resistance and susceptibility to specific antibiotics. The results showed a high concordance between mass spectrometry analysis and whole-genome sequencing, demonstrating the potential for targeted LC-MS/MS in accurate and rapid detection of antimicrobial resistance.

Summary: This study presents a method based on chronoamperometry for the rapid and quantitative detection of live E. coli. The method shows good correlation between the electrochemical indicator signals and the concentration of E. coli, with a detection time of less than 5 minutes and a detection range of 10(4)-10(8) CFU/mL. The method also demonstrates good repeatability, stability, and sensitivity.

Summary: This study evaluates a novel approach for detecting bacteria in water and food samples based on imaging of bacteriophage amplification. The results demonstrate that this imaging-based method matches the sensitivity and speed of the real-time PCR method without requiring complex sample preparation and expensive reagents.

Summary: This study demonstrated a rapid antimicrobial susceptibility test (AST) using deuterium labeling and MALDI mass spectrometry to detect methicillin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus. The assay showed significant reduction in average mass of lipids in susceptible strain after 3 hours of incubation with methicillin, while the resistant strain consistently showed labeling regardless of methicillin concentration. This method has the potential to be widely applicable in clinical microbiology labs with minimal additional costs.

Summary: In this study, a novel method for identifying colistin resistance in Enterobacter species and Klebsiella aerogenes is developed using MALDI-TOF MS. This method allows for rapid and accurate detection of resistance without the need for antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The study demonstrates that the MS assay is highly correlated with killing efficacy and can effectively predict how colistin would treat an infection. The use of MALDI-TOF MS for early identification of antimicrobial resistance can improve antimicrobial stewardship and patient outcomes.

Summary: In this study, silver nanoparticles were synthesized from the aqueous extract of endophytic fungi Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (CgAgNPs) and their antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli was evaluated. The results showed that CgAgNPs reduced biofilm formation in E. coli by inducing oxidative stress, interfering with antioxidant enzymes, cell content leakage, and downregulating the expression of virulence genes.

Summary: A rapid detection method for bacteria on sample surfaces was developed based on the endogenous enzymatic reactions of E. coli and S. aureus. The presence of the bacteria can be visually confirmed through the appearance of blue color in the swab and the formation of air bubbles in the reagent solution after two-step enzymatic reactions.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has deepened the relationships between humans and companion animals, leading to an increase in the use of antibiotics and biocides worldwide. Data from global surveillance studies show a linear trend in increasing carbapenem resistance among Gram-negative pathogens in companion animals, with humans potentially acquiring carbapenemase-producing bacteria through contact with infected animals or contaminated environments. The rapid spread of WHO critical priority carbapenemase-producing pathogens in companion animals presents a One Health challenge for the post-pandemic world.
