Infection by human parvovirus B19 is widespread and can be associated with a wide range of different pathologies and clinical manifestations. We provide the first evidence of localization of an active parvovirus B19 infection in the intestinal mucosa and its association with a severe inflammatory bowel disease, characterized by duodenal villous atrophy with increased intraepithelial lymphocytes and inflammatory infiltrates in the colonic mucosa. Virus in the intestinal mucosa was detected in cells of the inflammatory infiltrate, identified as T lymphocytes and selectively localized in sites of active tissue degeneration.

Federica Bichicchi, Niccolo Guglietta, Arthur Daniel Rocha Alves, Erika Fasano, Elisabetta Manaresi, Gloria Bua, Giorgio Gallinella

Summary: This study investigated the genomic sequence heterogeneity of Parvovirus B19 (B19V) using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques and a bioinformatics tool. The results showed that NGS analysis and the developed tool can effectively study sequence diversity, providing a better understanding of viral evolution dynamics within the quasispecies framework.

Summary: This survey assesses current attitudes and practices in managing acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) worldwide. Results show that diagnosis of AMI is often delayed but rarely missed. Abdominopelvic CT-scan with intravenous contrast was suggested as the most useful diagnostic test. Treatment approaches vary greatly, indicating the need for updated guidelines.

Pre-Existing Intrarenal Parvovirus B19 Infection May Relate to Antibody-Mediated Rejection in Pediatric Kidney Transplant Patients

Nicola Bertazza Partigiani, Susanna Negrisolo, Andrea Carraro, Diana Marzenta, Elisabetta Manaresi, Giorgio Gallinella, Luisa Barzon, Elisa Benetti

Summary: Viral infections can lead to transplant dysfunction and may play a role in rejection. Analysis of protocol biopsies in 106 children at different time points after transplantation showed an increased prevalence of intrarenal viral infection between 6 and 12 months. Specifically, Parvovirus B19 infection was associated with antibody-mediated rejection. Monitoring and treatment of Parvovirus B19 infection in the early post-transplant period is important.

Non-Permissive Parvovirus B19 Infection: A Reservoir and Questionable Safety Concern in Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Gloria Bua, Pasquale Marrazzo, Elisabetta Manaresi, Chiara Gamberini, Laura Bonsi, Francesco Alviano, Giorgio Gallinella

Summary: Both BM-MSCs and FM-MSCs can be infected by B19V, although they cannot support viral replication, they allow persistence of the virus in the infected cultures. Further studies are needed to understand the potential role of MSCs in B19V transmission and the conditions that can favor a potential reactivation of the virus.

Use of teduglutide in adults with short bowel syndrome-associated intestinal failure

Loris Pironi, Johane P. P. Allard, Francisca Joly, Parnia Geransar, Elisabeth Genestin, Ulrich-Frank Pape

Summary: Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a rare gastrointestinal disorder associated with intestinal failure (SBS-IF) and poor health-related outcomes. Patients with SBS-IF require long-term intravenous supplementation (IVS) and the goal of treatment is to reduce or eliminate the need for IVS. Teduglutide, a glucagon-like peptide 2 analog, has been shown to be effective in reducing IVS dependence and improving the quality of life for SBS-IF patients. The management of SBS-IF patients is complex and requires close monitoring.

Value of immunonutrition in patients undergoing pancreatic resection: a trial sequential meta-analysis

Claudio Ricci, Francesco Serbassi, Laura Alberici, Carlo Ingaldi, Leonardo H. Eusebi, Emilio De Raffele, Loris Pironi, Anna S. Sasdelli, Cristina Mosconi, Valentina Vicennati, Riccardo Casadei

Summary: Immunonutrition can reduce infectious complications and length of stay in patients undergoing pancreatic surgery. However, the small differences in mortality, morbidity, and postoperative pancreatic fistula rates make it impossible to exclude type II error due to large sample sizes.

Summary: Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) is a severe malignancy with increasing incidence, poorly understood pathogenesis, and low survival rates. TP53 gene alterations, especially missense mutations, negatively affect cancer-specific survival in EAC. HNF1alpha gene disruption is associated with other gene alterations and is identified as a new EAC-mutated gene.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence and severity of COVID-19 infection in patients receiving home parenteral nutrition (HPN) for chronic intestinal failure (CIF) from a European database. The results showed a significant variation in infection rates among countries, with the majority of cases being asymptomatic or mild but a significant proportion of infected patients experiencing severe or fatal outcomes. Lack of vaccination was associated with a higher risk of death.
