Bioidentical hormones

F. Z. Stanczyk, H. Matharu, S. A. Winer

Summary: After the publication of the Women's Health Initiative trials, there has been a growing interest among patients and clinicians in potential alternatives to conventional hormone therapy. Custom-compounded steroid hormone preparations, formulated by compounding pharmacies, are commonly used as an alternative therapy. While many postmenopausal women consider these hormones as natural or bioidentical, the misconception that salivary hormone levels are equivalent to free hormones in blood still exists.

Summary: Early full-time pregnancy reduces the risk of developing breast cancer, and r-hCG has a significant gene expression effect on breast tissues of BRCA1/2 carriers. This could offer a new strategy for breast cancer prevention.

Effect of oral contraceptives on total and bioavailable 25-hydroxyvitamin D

Frank Z. Stanczyk, Intira Sriprasert, Rachel Danis, Raj Pandian, Harpreet Matharu, Nicole Bender, Melissa Natavio

Summary: This study compared the effects of two combined oral contraceptive formulations on 25(OH)D levels and VDBP levels, revealing different impacts. LNG may have a suppressive effect on VDBP. Further research is needed to understand the influence of hormonal contraceptive formulations on vitamin D status and women's health.
