Summary: Hispanics/Latinos have higher rates of type 2 diabetes and may be disproportionately exposed to environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) including metals. This study found associations between urinary levels of arsenic, molybdenum, copper, and a mixture of 8 metals with measures of glucose homeostasis in a Mexican American population.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the associations between serum sphingolipids and insulin sensitivity as well as insulin secretion. The results showed positive correlations between certain subspecies of serum sphingolipids and insulin sensitivity, while negative correlations were observed with specific SPs. ROC curves indicated that certain serum sphingolipids could serve as good predictors of insulin sensitivity.

Summary: In a study of Hispanic/Latino adults without diabetes or taking antihypertensive medications, insulin resistance was found to be positively associated with both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The association between insulin resistance and systolic blood pressure was linear in men but nonlinear in women. Prediabetes status did not significantly affect the association between insulin resistance and blood pressure.

Summary: Protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) is an important target for treating type 2 diabetes. However, current PTP1B inhibitors lack selectivity and bioavailability. A study on Knoxia valerianoides led to the discovery of a unique anthraquinone-coumarin hybrid with good specificity for PTP1B. Further investigation of this plant led to the isolation of nine new anthraquinone glycosides and two known ones. All compounds showed PTP1B inhibitory activities, with compounds 4 and 8 exhibiting high selectivity for PTP1B over TCPTP.

Summary: Sex-specific associations were found between lipid species involved in mitochondrial fatty acid transport, beta-oxidation, and tricarboxylic acid cycle flux, which may provide therapeutic targets to improve insulin sensitivity. Men had lower insulin sensitivity, higher muscle acylcarnitines, serum ceramide, and lysophosphatidylcholine levels compared to women. Localizations of intramuscular lipids did not exhibit sex differences.

Summary: Androgens play a complex role in regulating insulin sensitivity, with decreased levels posing a risk for insulin resistance in men and excess levels contributing to insulin resistance in women with PCOS. Hormones like androgens and estrogens can induce mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, leading to ATP surplus and subsequently insulin resistance in diabetes. The hormone synergy-based view proposes a unified mechanism for the distinct metabolic roles of androgens in controlling insulin action in men with hypogonadism and women with PCOS.

Summary: Previous studies on blood glucose levels during the menstrual cycle have produced inconsistent results based on limited blood samples. This study used continuous glucose monitors and smartwatches to collect data from 49 individuals over an average duration of 79.3 ± 21.2 days, resulting in 149 cycles and 554 phases in the dataset. The results showed a biphasic pattern of blood glucose levels, with the highest levels during the luteal phase and lowest levels during the late-follicular phase. Factors such as estrogen levels, step count, fatigue, and food cravings were found to be associated with variations in blood glucose levels. The findings suggest that blood glucose could be an important parameter in understanding menstrual health and warrant further investigation into its relationship with the menstrual cycle.

Summary: This study assessed the prevalence of household food insecurity (HFI) and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation among youth and young adults (YYA) with diabetes. The results showed that HFI was more prevalent in type 2 diabetes compared to type 1 diabetes, while SNAP participation was higher in type 2 diabetes compared to type 1 diabetes. YYA receiving Medicaid or Medicare or without insurance, whose parents had lower levels of education, and with lower household income had greater odds of experiencing HFI.

Summary: This study aimed to identify patient-centered domains with long-term relevance to people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Semi-structured individual cognitive interviews were conducted with RA patients from five different countries. Six main themes were identified, including living with symptoms and functional limitations, lack of participation, partner and family issues, risk of damage to vital organs, coping strategies, and healthcare concerns. These domains are seldom measured in longitudinal registries and should be considered in patient-centered longitudinal studies.

Summary: This Italian study investigated the prevalence, prognostic factors, and outcomes of COVID-19 in autoimmune systemic diseases (ASD) patients. The study found that ASD patients had a higher prevalence of COVID-19 compared to the general population but a comparable death rate. Among ASD patients, systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients had a significantly higher COVID-19-related death rate. Older age, male gender, SSc, pre-existing lung involvement, and long-term steroid treatment were identified as major adverse prognostic factors for developing COVID-19. Patients treated with conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (csDMARDs) and SSc patients treated with low dose aspirin had a significantly lower prevalence of COVID-19.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between household food insecurity (HFI) and fear of hypoglycemia among young adults and adolescents with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as well as their parents. The results showed that adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes experiencing HFI had higher fear of hypoglycemia scores compared to those without HFI. Screening for HFI and fear of hypoglycemia can help healthcare providers customize diabetes education for individuals who have HFI and fear hypoglycemia.

Summary: The study aims to examine the rates of severe maternal morbidity (SMM) over a 10-year period and assess racial/ethnic disparities in SMM among insured women in Southern California. The study found an increasing trend in SMM rates from 2008 to 2017. Non-Hispanic Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Hispanic women were more likely to experience SMM events compared to non-Hispanic White women. Multilevel approaches are needed to understand the factors associated with racial and ethnic disparities in SMM and develop effective interventions to reduce SMM.

Summary: Disruptions in medical care during the COVID-19 pandemic were associated with a decrease in ABC testing among US adults with diabetes. ABC testing rates in 2021 were lower compared to 2019, and these lower rates were associated with delays or inability to access medical care. After full adjustment, adults who reported delaying or not getting medical care were 50% less likely to receive ABC testing.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the main factors influencing the Patient Global Assessment (PGA) score in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients. Factors related to disease activity, such as the use of low-dose corticosteroids and RAID items for pain and sleep difficulties, were found to be predictive for worse PGA scores. Factors related to disease severity, such as HAQ score and RAID total, were associated with higher PGA scores. There was an increasing trend in PGA scores in patients with longstanding diseases (>15 years).
