Summary: This article evaluated several strategies for the extraction of polar compounds from plasma samples and found that using the lowest injection volume and a sandwich injection with acetonitrile significantly improved the chromatographic peaks in HILIC. These methods were applied to analyze metabolic signatures in plasma samples from pigs with pulmonary hypertension, revealing altered metabolic pathways associated with right heart damage.

Summary: Chemically modified silica monolith particles were prepared for the adsorptive removal of lead (II) ions from aqueous medium. The adsorbent showed an adsorption capacity of 792 mg/g for Pb(II) ions, with a 98% adsorption rate under optimal conditions of pH 5, 0.4 g/L adsorbent dose, 500 mg/L Pb(II) ion concentration, and 1 hour adsorption time. The adsorption data fitted well with Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models, and the adsorption process followed a pseudo second-order kinetic model, suggesting spontaneous and exothermic adsorption.

Summary: A polymer brush derived from poly(2-(tert-butylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (PTBAEMA-SO3H@MSNPs) was successfully fabricated in this study. The structure and morphology of PTBAEMA-SO3H@ MSNPs were analyzed using various techniques, including transmission electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The optimal conditions for the removal of rhodamine B (Rh B) and crystal violet (CV) were determined, and the adsorption equilibrium was fitted with different isotherm models. The study found that PTBAEMA-SO3H@MSNPs are highly effective in removing Rh B and CV from water samples.

Summary: This article describes the fabrication of porous nicotinic acid-functionalized chito-oligosaccharide-bonded titania/silica hybrid monoliths through a co-gelation sol-gel process. The obtained stationary phase provides superior physiochemical properties, such as a cationic hydrophilic surface, porosity, and mechanical strength. The produced capillary columns showed high chromatographic performance with acceptable selectivity for charged analytes as well as organic polar compounds.

Summary: Non-spectroscopic and spectroscopic interferences can affect the accuracy of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry measurements. This article proposes an alternative method of reducing the absolute quantity of matrix by reducing the sample injection volume. Experimental results show that a capillary-based mono-segmented flow analysis with a sample injection volume as small as 1 µL can significantly reduce the interference and improve the accuracy of the analysis.

Summary: Aggregation induced emission (AIE) active cross-linked copolymers CP1-4 with high molecular weights and low polydispersity indices were prepared via copolymerization of NIPAM and TPE-based acrylate dimers. CP1-4 exhibit thermally sensitivity, solubility in common organic solvents and water, and potential for highly sensitive detection of nitroaromatics in aqueous environments, with detection levels as low as 0.25 mu g mL(-1) or 0.25 ppm achievable through a collapsing-swelling process.

Summary: Biosorption using phosphorylated hazelnut shell waste (FHS) is a promising method for lithium removal and recovery. This study investigated the performance of a continuous-flow packed-bed column system using FHS for ultra-low level lithium removal. The results showed that the lihium biosorption capacity of the FHS column was unaffected by the bed height, but decreased with increasing flow rate.

Summary: In this study, an ionic covalent organic framework (iCOF) surface grafting monolithic sorbent was prepared for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of aristolochic acids (AAs) in various samples. The density of quaternary ammonium ions in the iCOF was modulated for enhanced adsorption of AAs. The iCOF surface grafting monolithic sorbent was confirmed by different means. Several operating conditions were optimized to develop the online in-tube SPME-HPLC method, which showed good linearity, low limits of detection, and high recoveries for AAs in serum samples. This study presents a feasible approach for the application of COF-based monolithic sorbents in sample preparation.

Summary: A chitosan-alginate sponge with multiple cross-linking networks was developed for adsorption and enrichment of anionic dyes from food samples. The sponge showed better three-dimensional network structure, mechanical behavior, and stability compared to pure chitosan and alginate sponges. The adsorption performance and selectivity of the sponge were systematically studied, and it maintained high adsorption capacity and selectivity for anionic dyes. The sponge also showed satisfactory reusability and was successfully combined with high-performance liquid chromatography for the enrichment and detection of anionic dyes in candy and cocktail samples.
