Fragile X syndrome is caused by CGG trinucleotide repeat expansion within the fragile X mental retardation 1 gene, when repeat number exceeds 200. The typical psychiatric profile of fragile X syndrome patients includes cognitive and behavioral deficits, psychiatric comorbidity, and autistic characteristics. Specific psychiatric features have not yet been clarified, specifically in relationship to age and genetic characteristics. The objective of this study was to characterize psychiatric comorbidities in subjects with fragile X syndrome at different ages. Subjects with fragile X syndrome and their unaffected siblings were recruited and their parents filled out functional-behavioral and psychiatric comorbidities questionnaires. Adolescents with fragile X syndrome showed decreased prevalence of functional-behavioral deficits. Incidence and severity of most psychiatric comorbidities were lower in older subjects. Incidence of generalized anxiety disorder increased with age in the fragile X syndrome group. The typical profile of patients with fragile X syndrome changes with age. Unaffected siblings exhibit anxiety and motor tics.

Associations between Exposure to Industrial Air Pollution and Prevalence of Asthma and Atopic Diseases in Haifa Bay Area

Raanan Raz, Yuval, Ruth Lev Bar-Or, Jeremy D. Kark, Ronit Sinnreich, David M. Broday, Ruthie Harari-Kremer, Lea Bentur, Alex Gileles-Hillel, Lital Keinan-Boker, Andrey Lyubarsky, Dorit Tsur, Arnon Afek, Noam Levin, Estela Derazne, Gilad Twig

Summary: The study aimed to examine the relationship between exposure to air pollution from the Haifa Bay Area (HBA) industrial area and prevalent asthma and other atopic diseases in adolescents. The results showed that residency in the HBA was associated with a higher risk of asthma, but did not provide evidence for causal relationships between HBA industry-related emissions and prevalent atopic diseases.

Postnatal exposure to ambient temperature and rapid weight gain among infants delivered at term gestations: a population-based cohort study

Summary: Exposure to high ambient temperatures during infancy in Israel is positively associated with rapid infant weight gain, suggesting the importance of considering temperature exposure in the context of childhood obesity prevention efforts. Future studies should further investigate the nature and sources of this association.

Summary: This study compared the use of population registry addresses and maternal addresses at the time of delivery for assessing prenatal air pollution exposures and their associations with congenital hypothyroidism. The results showed that ignoring residential inaccuracies only resulted in a small bias of the associations towards the null.

Summary: This study analyzed computerized anthropometric data from well-baby clinics in Israel to estimate the heritability of weight gain during infancy. The results showed that the heritability of weight gain decreases significantly in the second year of life, suggesting that this period could be a critical time for interventions to prevent childhood obesity in high-risk infants.

Associations of Exposure to Nitrogen Oxides with Prevalent Asthma and Other Atopic Diseases in Israel

Summary: Research indicates that half of the global population will suffer from an allergic condition at some point in life. Childhood exposure to nitrogen oxides is a risk factor for the onset of asthma. The association between exposure and allergic diseases other than asthma is unclear. We demonstrate a strong, dose-response relationship between exposure and a group of allergic outcomes, using data comprising 2.5 million subjects over 50 years. The large health benefits from clean air should motivate governments to prioritize mitigation measures.
