Summary: In mice exposed to alcohol during early development, increased alcohol intake during adolescence was observed, with associated decrease in pCREB/CREB ratio in certain brain areas. Additionally, behavioral alterations such as increased anxiety-like responses during acute alcohol withdrawal and higher blood alcohol concentrations were noted in these early alcohol exposed mice.

Summary: Our study aimed to investigate the role of the HPA axis in aversive memory expression and extinction in Swiss and B6 mice. We found that B6 mice showed stronger aversive memory and longer extinction times than Swiss mice. Differences in corticosterone levels and responses to a CRF1 receptor antagonist were observed between the two strains, suggesting a strain-specific mechanism in opioid withdrawal memory.

Summary: This study investigates the molecular mechanisms involved in the retrieval and extinction of morphine withdrawal memories in the basolateral amygdala (BLA) and the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) of rats. The results show differential expression and activity of synaptic molecules in these regions during the extinction of aversive memories of opiate withdrawal, providing evidence for the development of therapeutic strategies to minimize relapses induced by morphine withdrawal-associated aversive memories.

Summary: Chromatin modification plays a crucial role in various brain processes, including drug addiction. The induction and persistence of drug-induced behavior and molecular changes can be explained by drug-induced epigenetic mechanisms. This study investigated the epigenetic regulation during aversive memory retrieval and extinction in opiate withdrawal, revealing the involvement of histone acetylation and p-Brd4 in these processes.

Summary: Stress triggers relapses in cocaine use, engaging memory-related nuclei, such as BLA and DG. D3 receptor antagonists, like SB-277011-A, reduce cocaine reward and relapse by modulating Akt/mTOR and MEK/ERK1/2 pathways. This study found that SB-277011-A suppressed stress-induced cocaine-seeking behavior and corticosterone enhancement, while also affecting Akt, mTOR, and ERK1/2 activation differently depending on the stressor and dose used.

Summary: This study found that diabetic animals exhibit severe xerostomia characterized by reduced saliva flow rate, diminished total protein content, and decreased amylase activity. The impaired saliva production in diabetes is associated with reduced and delayed intracellular Ca2+ signals in submandibular acinar cells, caused by malfunctioning mitochondria. Targeting malfunctioning mitochondria may be a potential strategy for the treatment of diabetic xerostomia.

Summary: The coexistence of pain and depression is frequently observed in patients with chronic pain and depression. Oxytocin, a neuropeptide, has been reported to relieve chronic pain and depressive symptoms. This study investigated the effect of intranasal oxytocin on neuropathic pain and comorbid depressive symptoms, and found that oxytocin attenuated depression-like behavior but did not alleviate mechanical hyperalgesia. The results suggest that intranasal oxytocin may have the potential to treat depressive symptoms in neuropathic pain patients.
