Summary: A survey of 21 free online buffer calculators and apps found that only 2 accurately calculated pH under conditions where [H+] and [OH-] cannot be ignored in the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation. Traditional guidelines for when the use of formal concentrations is acceptable were deemed flawed. Robust equations for predicting pH of acidic and alkaline buffers were proposed, which can be utilized with programmable calculators and should be adopted by online buffer calculators and apps.

Summary: RNRs are essential in biology for providing building blocks for DNA replication and repair, controlling fidelity. Intense examination of RNRs has led to the development of new tools and guiding frameworks for the study of radicals in biology, pointing towards future frontiers in radical enzymology.

Summary: Our study reveals that mutual funds worldwide gain substantial international exposure by holding domestic shares of multinationals, and funds with higher indirect international exposure tend to perform better. This positive effect is primarily driven by fund managers' ability to invest in multinationals, rather than the performance of those multinationals.

Summary: Individuals returning from wintering in Antarctica may experience increased or new allergic reactions to environmental allergens. Blood samples analyzed showed approximately one third of participants had specific IgE against pollen. Most individuals showed a reduction in specific IgE about nine months after deployment, but five participants had the highest levels after returning to their normal environment. The examination of specific IgE against dust mites showed different dynamics. Six out of ten individuals had the highest specific IgE concentrations at the inner Antarctic measurement time point, consistent with the general situation in the stations.

Summary: The use of biocatalysis in the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) is a powerful strategy, enabled by advancements in molecular biology techniques. This paper presents examples of various enzymes, including lipases, oxidoreductases, and transaminases, that can be integrated into complex pharmaceutical multi-step syntheses. The examples demonstrate high substrate loadings and excellent selectivity, making them promising for industrial applications.

Summary: While accent effects have been studied in Western advertising contexts, there are contradictory findings on accent effects, and the moderating role of country-of-origin (COO), in other contexts. This study explores the impact of accent and language on consumers' perceived effectiveness of a spokesperson in Chinese advertising contexts. The findings show that standard accents are perceived as more effective by Chinese consumers, with standard Mandarin associated with belongingness and standard English associated with sophistication and modernity.

Summary: This article explores the relationship between the near-death experience (NDE) and the experience induced by the psychedelic drug 5-Methoxy-DMT (5MeO-DMT) through a case study. The study found a high level of comparability between the NDE and psychedelic experiences in general, but also identified unique themes in the NDE that were not present in the 5MeO-DMT experience or other psychedelic experience studies.

Summary: The paper investigates the determinants of the end of U.S. economic expansions since 1960 using a binary variable approach. Unlike previous studies, the paper uses a left-hand side variable that is coded as one prior to NBER dated recessions, rather than during recessions, to avoid confusion. The study eliminates contamination by excluding recession periods and recovery months during subsequent expansions, resulting in a robust specification with the interest rate spread as a predictor.

Summary: Young people in Pakistan face challenges such as child marriage, which have adverse consequences on their education, employment, health and overall well-being. Many young people wish to marry later, but recognize that child marriage is used as a protective strategy to cope with poverty and prevent sexual activity prior to marriage. Young women are limited in their decision-making about marriage due to societal norms.
