Densities of two selected ionic liquids (ILs), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoro-methylsulfonyl)imide, [bmim] [NTf2], and 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethyl-sulfonyl)imide, [bmpyr] [NTf2], were determined in the temperature range from (293.15 to 353.15) K. From the experimental density values, the thermal expansion coefficient was calculated. The specific conductivity was measured in the range from (303.15 to 353.15) K. Our experimental results were compared with available literature data. Also, viscosity of these ionic liquids was measured from room temperature up to 353.15 K. Using the obtained data, the temperature effect on the viscosity was analyzed. Since there are limited literature data on physicochemical properties of ionic liquids, data obtained in this study can provide valuable contributions for better understanding of ILs behavior.

Structure-Stability Relationship in Aqueous Colloids of Latex Particles and Gemini Surfactants

Dora Takacs, Tamas Peter, Zsofia Vargane Arok, Bojana Katana, Snezana Papovic, Slobodan Gadzuric, Milan Vranes, Istvan Szilagyi

Summary: This study investigated the influence of gemini surfactants (GSs) on the charging and aggregation features of anionic sulfate modified latex (SL) particles using light scattering techniques. The results showed that GSs with short alkyl chains aggregated the particles through charge screening, while GSs with longer alkyl chains neutralized or overcharged the particles, leading to destabilization or restabilization of the dispersions, respectively.

Greener sample preparation method for direct determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in river sediment based on an aqueous biphasic system with functionalized ionic liquids

Jasmina Musovic, Milan Vranes, Snezana Papovic, Slobodan Gadzuric, Slavica Razic, Tatjana Trtic-Petrovic

Summary: This study designed and synthesized two water-soluble functionalized ionic liquids (FILs) for the selective extraction of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from river sediments. It was found that the ligand anion and the cation were responsible for the efficient extraction and formation of the aqueous biphasic systems (ABS), respectively. The partition coefficients for Cd(II) and Pb(II) using [bmim][mbt] were 408 and 180, respectively. The optimal conditions for the direct extraction of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from sediments were investigated and the proposed method showed a high level of greenness.

Aleksandra Roganovic, Milan Vranes, Nikola Cvjeticanin, Xiaoping Chen, Snezana Papovic

Summary: In this study, a functionalized zwitterionic compound C(1)C(4)imSO(3) was synthesized and used as an additive in LiTFSI/C(2)C(2)imTFSI ionic liquid-based electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries. The structure and purity of C(1)C(4)imSO(3) were confirmed using NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. The thermal stability of C(1)C(4)imSO(3) was examined using TG-MS and DSC. The LiTFSI/C(2)C(2)imTFSI/C(1)C(4)imSO(3) system showed improved lithium-ion intercalation/deintercalation properties, such as capacity retention and Coulombic efficiency, compared to the electrolyte without additive.

Dynamic In Situ Monitoring of the Salt Counter-ion Effect on Surfactant Effectiveness Using Reconfigurable Janus Emulsions

Marko Pavlovic, Heman Kumar Ramiya Ramesh Babu, Saveh Djalali, Zoran Pavlovic, Milan Vranes, Lukas Zeininger

Summary: A method for visualizing and quantifying surfactant effectiveness in different electrolyte environments using reconfigurable Janus emulsions as optical probes is presented. The effect of different types and concentrations of salt counter-ions on the surfactant surface excess was investigated for both ionic and non-ionic surfactants. It was found that the interfacial tensions of the ionic surfactants varied significantly, while the effect on the non-ionic surfactant was less pronounced. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of Janus emulsions as powerful tools for studying surfactant properties at liquid interfaces.

137Cs direct measurement in water via LSC techniques

Ivana Stojkovic, Natasa Todorovic, Jovana Nikolov, Milan Vranes, Snezana Papovic, Milka Zecevic

Summary: This study explores the screening technique of 137Cs concentration dissolved in water using the Cherenkov counting method. Prompt detection of 90Sr/90Y and 137Cs is crucial in nuclear emergencies or potential radioactive leakage from power plants. The researchers present a novel LSC method that allows quick evaluation of water samples' radioactive contamination status without any sample pre-treatment. By adding ionic liquid, they improve the method's efficiency and detection limit, making it 30% more efficient with a 4 times lower detection limit. They also investigate interference with 90Sr/90Y and distinguish individual radionuclides in the Cherenkov spectrum.

Jovana Panic, Snezana Papovic, Bojan Sarac, Romana Cerc Korosec, Maksim Rapaic, Slobodan Gadzuric, Marija Bester-Rogac, Milan Vranes

Summary: In this study, the compatibility and interaction of a mixture of the active pharmaceutical ingredient ionic liquid (API-IL) benzocainium ibuprofenate and natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) of menthol:decanoic acid were investigated. These hydrophobic API-IL-NADES mixtures provide a potential solution for the topical application of ionic liquids. The synthesized and characterized ionic liquid and NADESs were examined using spectroscopy and calorimetry, and the thermodynamic properties of the mixtures were measured to understand the influence of NADES components on molecular and solvent performance.

Electrochemical Study of the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction using Coppe r(II) Thiacalix[4]arene-based Catalyst

Hani El Moll, Khalaf M. Alenezi, Abdallah O. Alshammari, Ashanul Haque, Jamal Humaidi, Raoudha Soury, Eid M. S. Azzam, Fahad Abdulaziz, Salman Latif, Milan Vranes

Summary: Despite the interesting structure of thiacalix[4]arene, there are few reported examples of thiacalixarene-based coordination complexes used as electrocatalysts. Here, we report the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by a thiacalix[4]arene-based copper(II) complex (1). The HER occurs at -1.03 V with a shift of 0.27 V compared to the second peak potential at -1.30 V. Increasing the number of acetic acid equivalents from 0 to 17.5 led to an increase in peak current, reaching a maximum value of 183 mu A for 15 equivalents of acetic acid.

Aleksandar Maric, Pavle Jovanov, Slobodan Gadzuric, Tatjana Trtic-Petrovic, Marijana Sakac, Aleksandar Tot, Marko Bertic, Milan Vranes

Summary: The influence of biodegradable cholinium ionic liquids on the formation of aqueous biphasic systems and the extraction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from honey was investigated. The ability of ionic liquids to form aqueous biphasic systems was found to vary depending on the anions used. By comparing phase diagrams, it was determined that cholinium butyrate had the highest extraction efficiency for HMF from honey. Computer simulations provided insights into the mechanisms of HMF extraction using ionic liquids.
