Summary: Baicalein inhibits oxLDL uptake through competitive inhibition of CD36 binding and enhances cholesterol efflux via the CD36-Src-JNK-ABCA1 signaling pathway. Therefore, baicalein can suppress macrophage foam cell formation and play an anti-atherosclerosis role.

Summary: The study showed that MEDI6012 has an acceptable safety profile and can increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, endogenous apoA1, and non-ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 cholesterol efflux capacity in patients with stable coronary heart disease, while reducing the number of atherogenic low-density lipoprotein particles.

Summary: In patients with heart failure, lower HDL cholesterol concentration has been identified as a strong predictor of adverse outcomes. Studies have shown that HDL function, particularly cholesterol efflux and anti-inflammatory capacity, may have significant impact on patient prognosis. Changes in HDL functionality, including decreased cholesterol efflux and anti-inflammatory capacity, were observed over a 9-month period in heart failure patients. It was also found that specific HDL proteins, such as apolipoprotein A1, are closely associated with HDL function metrics.

Summary: HDL cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC) has emerged as a better predictor of cardiovascular risk compared to plasma HDL-cholesterol levels, and is often impaired in various genetic and pathological conditions associated with high cardiovascular risk.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the lipoprotein profile in psoriasis patients with low cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC) to those with normal CEC using a novel nuclear magnetic resonance algorithm. The results showed that psoriasis patients with low CEC had smaller high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles, which were associated with vascular health.

Summary: The study found that in addition to HDL-C, total CEC was associated with the presence of MACE, while %CEC and HDL functionality were not associated with MACE.

Summary: Higher serum HDL cholesterol was associated with more favorable changes in memory and executive function in older people with diabetes mellitus. However, this was not due to CEC or ApoA1. A decline in CEC was associated with small vessel disease in the brain.

Summary: This study found sex-specific changes in various parameters of HDL-CEC in patients with severe AS. Sex-based modifications in HDL functionality by HDL-CEC might account for the reduced burden of calcification in women vs. men with severe AS.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the association between outpatient LDL-C testing and subsequent statin adherence and intensification in patients after an ASCVD event. The results showed that LDL-C testing was associated with improved statin adherence and higher rates of treatment intensification.

Summary: This study found that HDL functionality is associated with the composition of coronary plaques, particularly the percentage lipid volume. The positive correlation between high HDL-CEC and plaque volume suggests that HDL functionality may have a protective effect on the development of coronary artery disease.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the prognostic value of cholesterol levels in CLL and develop a prognostic nomogram that incorporates lipid metabolism. The results showed that lower cholesterol levels at diagnosis were associated with worse prognosis, and post-therapeutic elevation of cholesterol levels correlated with better survival. Therefore, cholesterol profiles can be used as a cheap and readily accessible tool for predicting prognosis in CLL.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between cholesterol-uptake capacity (CUC) of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and revascularization after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The results showed that the serum CUC level at the index PCI was independently associated with subsequent revascularization. Continuous assessment of HDL functionality by CUC might help predict revascularization after PCI.

Summary: Berberine, a bioactive compound extracted from medicinal plants, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Studies have found that berberine may regulate HDL function, potentially improving dyslipidemias and atherosclerosis. However, further human trials are needed to evaluate the impact of berberine on HDL function and cholesterol metabolism.
