The Neapolitan region of Italy is plagued by the presence of shallow man-made cavities in lithoid tuffs that cause problems for communities because they produce building damages and loss of human lives. A high resolution P-wave seismic-reflection technique was successfully used to define a cavity 6 m by 10 m in horizontal dimensions and with a height of about 6 m located in a tuff layer 10 to 19 m below ground level. Such a cavity was located at Afragola (near Naples) where the local geology is typical of the Neapolitan area. The seismic dataset was acquired by using end-on spread geometry, with 0.25 m spacing for shots and 0.5 m for receivers. The application of band-pass filtering (30-150 Hz) allowed us to remove incoherent noise from the data, while an additional equivalent slope (Vs(-1)) of 0.005 s m(-1) cut in the FK transform results in ground-roll noise removal. Both the acquisition and processing methods have been necessary to investigate and define the shape and dimensions of the targeted cavity.

Observing meteotsunamis (Marrobbio) on the southwestern coast of Sicily

Petra Zemunik, Angelo Bonanno, Salvatore Mazzola, Giovanni Giacalone, Ignazio Fontana, Simona Genovese, Gualtiero Basilone, Julio Candela, Jadranka Sepic, Ivica Vilibic, Salvatore Aronica

Summary: The paper presents observations from a 2007 experiment along the southwestern coast of Sicily, focusing on the phenomenon of marrobbio, a type of meteotsunami commonly seen in the Strait of Sicily. The study found rapid air pressure and sea level oscillations during marrobbio events, with atmospheric disturbances propagating mostly towards east-northeast at speeds of 19-24 m/s. The atmospheric patterns were conducive for wave ducting mechanisms during most marrobbio events, highlighting the need for long-term high-frequency observations and high-resolution models to quantify meteotsunamis accurately.

Summary: The study proposed a 3D model that successfully simulated the spatial distribution of chlorophyll in most parts of the Gulf of Sirte, with 80% of the simulated results matching the experimental data. This model can be used to predict chlorophyll distributions in hard-to-access areas and to forecast the impact of global warming on phytoplankton in marine ecosystems.

Summary: The study of small pelagic fish in the Mediterranean Sea began in the Adriatic in the 1950's. Since 2009, internationally coordinated surveys under the MEDIAS action have been conducted to provide data for the management of small pelagics. The surveys cover EU Mediterranean waters and monitor the distribution using a common protocol.

Summary: In this study, acoustic data collected in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, was analyzed to develop a method for identifying and classifying fish aggregations using 3D acoustic patterns. The results suggest that three distinct groups can be identified mathematically. This approach shows promise for improving monitoring programs for marine resources and can be applied to climate change research.

Automatic classification of acoustically detected krill aggregations: A case study from Southern Ocean

Summary: Acoustic surveys play a significant role in assessing the distribution and abundance of pelagic organisms. The identification of species in acoustic observations is usually based on biological sampling and expert knowledge. This study examines the use of unsupervised clustering methods for identifying krill species and finds that k-means performs better than hierarchical methods. The findings highlight the importance of selecting specific variables for clustering analysis to improve accuracy.

Large-Scale Mercury Dispersion at Sea: Modelling a Multi-Hazard Case Study from Augusta Bay (Central Mediterranean Sea)

Mario Sprovieri, Andrea Cucco, Francesca Budillon, Daniela Salvagio Manta, Fabio Trincardi, Salvatore Passaro

Summary: This article discusses a potential multi-hazard scenario resulting from an earthquake in the highly seismogenic area of the Mediterranean Sea, Augusta Bay. The bay is heavily contaminated with mercury due to long-term industrial exploitation. Utilizing a high-resolution hydrodynamic and transport model, the article calculates the enhanced spreading of mercury in the open sea following the damage to an artificial damming system. The simulated scenario highlights the need for a reevaluation of risk management in marine areas with significant contamination.

Interferences between natural and anthropic hazards in marine-coastal environments: Assessing transport from land to the offshore systems in the Crotone basin (Ionian Sea)

Summary: This paper focuses on providing field evidence of the environmental hazards associated with flood events in highly contaminated marine coastal areas. Using sediment cores from the Crotone site in the Ionian Sea, the study examines the distribution of heavy metals and their potential as long-term sources of pollution for the marine ecosystem. The results show that historically flash flood events played a crucial role in transferring highly polluted sediments from land to sea, leading to secondary contamination in offshore areas. This study highlights the cumulative mechanisms of multiple pollution and transfer of contamination in coastal and offshore environments.

Seismic site effect in a coastal area: 1D and 2D modelling of a tuff cliff in Sorrento Peninsula, Italy

Vincenzo Di Fiore, Daniela Tarallo, Giuseppe Cavuoto, Nicola Pelosi, Michele Punzo, Paolo Clemente

Summary: This study evaluates the amplification factors of a tuff cliff under seismic loading using 1D and 2D modeling. Field measurements and laboratory tests were conducted to estimate the geotechnical and geophysical parameters for the analysis. The results showed that the amplification factor reached a maximum value of 10 with a period of 0.11 s in the cliff edge area, and decreased to 2.90 seaside and 4.0 landside in other areas. The comparison between 1D and 2D modeling highlighted the importance of topographic effects related to the cliff.

The Anthropogenic Footprint of Physical Harm on the Seabed of Augusta Bay (Western Ionian Sea); A Geophysical Investigation

Francesca Budillon, Marco Firetto Carlino, Sara Innangi, Salvatore Passaro, Renato Tonielli, Fabio Trincardi, Mario Sprovieri

Summary: This study investigates the extent of human-induced physical impacts on the continental shelf near Augusta Bay in southeastern Sicily, Italy. Using various techniques and direct seabed samplings, the researchers identified several anthropogenic footprints, such as anchor grooves, excavations, and trawl marks, on the seafloor. Furthermore, the long-term disposal of dredge spoils has altered the seafloor morphology, creating a thick deposit on the central continental shelf. The production of a thematic map of seafloor features offers valuable insights into sediment facies distribution and the localization of human disturbance.
