Summary: Flexible bronchoscopy (FB) is a common diagnostic modality for lung cancer, especially in older patients. A study in Japan reviewed FB procedures in patients aged >= 85 years and found that it was performed with acceptable safety and diagnostic yield, leading to diverse treatment options and a >60% 2-year survival rate for those who received active treatment.

Summary: The study found that older age, smoking history, non-tonsil or base of tongue tumors, and T4 tumors were associated with a higher risk of death in patients with oropharyngeal cancer. Patients receiving intensity-modulated radiation therapy or lower radiation doses had lower mortality rates.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of 2 vs 5 years of zoledronate treatment following adjuvant chemotherapy in early breast cancer patients. The results showed that extending zoledronate treatment beyond 2 years did not improve outcomes for high-risk patients, suggesting a reduction in the currently recommended bisphosphonate treatment duration of 3 to 5 years.

Summary: This study assessed the deterioration of sexual health in head and neck cancer survivors five years after diagnosis, using data from the French National Prospective VICAN Survey. The results showed that both men and women experienced alterations in sexuality and body image, with dissatisfaction in sexual frequency and desire being associated with different treatment methods. Factors such as fatigue, impaired physical health, and high disease stage were significantly associated with decreased sexual desire.

Summary: In the KEYNOTE-522 trial, the addition of Pembrolizumab to neoadjuvant chemotherapy improved pathological complete response rate in early triple-negative breast cancer patients and also improved event-free survival. However, this improvement was predominantly observed in patients who did not achieve a pathological complete response.

Summary: Lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer-related deaths, can be improved by early detection. A study found dysregulated lipid metabolism in different cell types of early-stage lung cancers. By identifying nine important lipids, a targeted assay was developed with high specificity in detecting early-stage lung cancer. This method demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity in screening and clinical cohorts. Overall, this method shows promise in early lung cancer detection and cancer prevention for high-risk populations.

Summary: This study aimed to clarify the long-term clinical outcomes and risk factors of metachronous gastric neoplasm (MGN) 5 years after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for early gastric cancer (EGC). The study found that male sex, severe intestinal metaplasia, tumor-positive lateral margin, <5 mm lateral safety margin, and synchronous adenoma were positive predictive factors for MGN after 5 years post-ESD. In addition, successful eradication of Helicobacter pylori was a negative predictive factor for MGN.

Summary: The study found that Medicaid expansion had a significant impact on early-stage cancer diagnosis, especially in the first year of implementation. However, the effects diminished over time. There was also suggestive evidence of benefits on late-stage cancer diagnosis in the third year of expansion.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the survival rate of variable-thread tapered implants (VTTIs) and identify risk factors for early/late implant loss. The findings showed that VTTIs have an acceptable survival rate in clinical practice. Non-submerged implant healing is associated with early implant loss, while male gender, periodontitis, implant length <10 mm, and overdenture significantly increase the risk of late implant loss.

Summary: The study found that TNBC patients who survived longer than 5 years were typically younger, Caucasian, had lower AJCC stage, smaller tumor size, better LN status, and received chemotherapy. A localized surgical approach may be the preferred choice for these patients, and a nomogram was developed to predict 3- and 5-year survival probabilities.

Summary: Our analysis of data from the SEER cancer registry program revealed significant differences in 5-year survival rates for women diagnosed with breast cancer between 2007 and 2010, based on factors such as age, tumor histology, tumor grade, stage, hormone receptors, race/ethnicity, insurance status, region, urbanization level, and county attributes. In the United States, there was an upward trend in age-standardized 5-year OS for women diagnosed with breast cancer between 1975 and 2010, although disparities were observed based on tumor characteristics and race/ethnicity. Efforts are needed to further understand and address the changing trends and disparities in breast cancer survival rates.
