Summary: Traumatic cervical spine injuries in older adults, often caused by minor traumas like ground-level falls, have a poor prognosis. A study of 1512 patients aged 65 and above with traumatic cervical spine injuries in Japan found significant differences in patient backgrounds and injury statuses based on the external causes, with ground-level falls associated with poorer pre-injury health conditions. Preexisting medical comorbidities and frailty were associated with unfavorable outcomes, independent of age or severity of neurological impairment.

Summary: Severe burns result in decreased sensitivity of carotid arteries to norepinephrine and angiotensin II, as well as reduced relaxation responses to acetylcholine within 6 hours post-burn. Burn injuries also lead to increased carotid artery wall thickness and collagen expression in the tunica media.

Summary: The study aimed to test the effectiveness of advanced training using the VRRS HomeKit device in improving functional outcomes in patients with SABI. The results showed that the teleneuro-VRRS group significantly improved in general and motor outcomes, psychological well-being, and QoL compared to the control group, with improvements in functional independence and cognitive abilities.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the epidemiology of a large cohort of older adults with isolated traumatic brain injury (TBI) and identify predictors of mortality, palliative interventions, and discharge to preinjury residence in those with moderate/severe TBI. The results showed that severity of injury, rather than age alone, influenced survival and favorable discharge disposition in older adults with TBI.

Summary: This study found that burn survivors have reduced capacity for neuroplasticity early in the recovery period (6 weeks after injury), but this normalizes later in the recovery period (12 weeks after injury). Moreover, burn survivors with normalized neuroplasticity 12 weeks after injury recover faster after burn injury.

Summary: This article reviews the psychosocial influences on eating behaviors in later life and highlights the importance of early food experiences in shaping these behaviors. The study calls for further research on specific psychosocial factors, improvement in research methodologies, and identification of barriers and enablers to maintaining a healthy diet in older adults.

Summary: This study investigates early predictors of outcome for discharge in older adults with sABI, indicating that changes in Disability Rating Scale and Level of Cognitive Functioning at different time points, as well as the presence of certain medical conditions, can help predict the discharge outcome and guide hospital discharge planning for frail patients with sABI.
