Summary: Children living with HIV have decreased bone mineral content and density, increasing their risk for fractures and osteoporosis. Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) can be used as an alternative to DXA for bone assessments in resource-constrained settings. QUS correlates well with DXA cross-sectionally, but not longitudinally.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between body composition and bioelectrical variables in 6801 children and adolescents aged 8-20 years. The findings showed that classic and specific bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) agreed well with the evaluation of body composition using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS), providing valuable tools for growth studies, malnutrition prevention, and athlete performance monitoring.

Summary: This study examined the validity of using BMI≥30 kg/m(2) as an indicator for obesity and identified a new BMI cut-off point for predicting obesity in middle-aged and older adults (BMI=27.27 kg/m(2)). The findings highlight the need for revising obesity guidelines in Italy.

Summary: Body mass index (BMI) plays an important role in the relationship between the APOLIPOPROTEIN (APO)E genotype and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. This study found that BMI modulates the effect of APOE on CVD risk markers and there may be interactions with body composition. The findings also suggest that diet might be a factor in this relationship.

Summary: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to describe the anthropometric, body composition, and somatotype characteristics of professional male soccer players and to compare the values reported according to different assessment methods and equations. Significant differences were found in height, fat mass, fat mass percentage, and fat-free mass when comparing different assessment methods. The study provides useful information for properly assessing the body composition of professional male soccer players.

Summary: The problem of overweight and obesity is increasing in the population and is associated with metabolic disorders and increased risk of death. This study assessed the changes in body composition and physical fitness in children participating in a weight-loss program and found a possible relationship between changes in body composition and improvements in fitness. Both BIA and DXA methods were equally useful for measuring body composition.

Summary: This study found that cesarean delivery may increase the risk of overweight and obesity in preschool children, and also lead to an increase in their fat mass, while fat-free mass does not significantly change.

Summary: This study aimed to cross-calibrate body composition measures from two different devices, GE Lunar Prodigy and GE Lunar iDXA. Differences were found in body composition parameters between the two devices. Reanalysis of Prodigy scans using enhanced software reduced the differences, but significant discrepancies still remained. The differences between the devices were attributed to scan resolution and software. It is important for researchers and clinicians to consider the impact of device and software updates on the longitudinal assessment of body composition.

Summary: This study found that younger children have lower levels of obesity, while older children with a higher BMI percentile have higher levels of fat mass. The current BMI percentile cutoffs overdiagnose obesity in younger groups.

Summary: Lung function in children and adolescents with obesity is affected by adiposity and lean body mass. A cross-sectional study involving 69 participants revealed that those with obesity had higher forced vital capacity (FVC) and lower ratio of forced expiratory volume in one second to FVC (FEV1/FVC). The study also found a positive correlation between FVC and fat mass markers, and a negative correlation between FEV1/FVC and fat mass markers. Inspiratory capacity, expiratory reserve volume, and peak expiratory flow were correlated with lean body mass markers. Participants with obesity also showed a lower dysanapsis index.
