Summary: This study aimed to assess the role of immunocyte-derived ratios (IDRs) as markers for postoperative recovery of gastrointestinal function following colorectal cancer surgery. The results showed that certain IDRs may have potential as predictive determinants for postoperative gastrointestinal functional recovery.

Summary: Postoperative ileus is a common complication after abdominal surgery, which can have serious consequences. Advances in peri-operative management have been made, but the rate of prolonged postoperative ileus remains high. The pathophysiology of postoperative ileus involves an early neurological phase, a later inflammatory phase, and a pharmacological phase. This review article describes these phases and discusses current pharmacological treatments and potential research areas for targeting.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether bit chewing can shorten the gastric emptying time (GET), small intestinal transit time (SITT), and total orocecal transit time (OCTT) in clinically normal horses. The results indicate that bit chewing significantly decreases OCTT, but has minimal effects on GET and SITT. Bit chewing may be a safe, inexpensive, and effective clinical treatment to improve small intestinal motility in horses.

Summary: The ETB receptor signaling in enteric glia plays a role in the modulation of intestinal motility and inflammation. ET-1 release regulates glial responses through the ETB receptor, and its upregulation in inflammation may contribute to the pathogenesis of postoperative ileus.

Summary: Feeding intolerance and ileus are common complications in critically ill, surgical, and trauma patients, leading to longer hospital stays, increased infections, readmission rates, and medical costs. Current medical treatment for ileus is ineffective and has serious side effects. Inflammatory mediators play a critical role in the development of ileus, but their direct effects on gastrointestinal cells are not well understood.

Summary: Postoperative ileus (POI) is a gastrointestinal motility dysfunction caused by mechanical stress to the intestine during abdominal surgery. Inflammation and infiltration of inflammatory cells play important roles in the mechanism of POI. The P2X7R antagonist A438079 exhibits anti-inflammatory effects and could be a potential target for the treatment of POI.

Summary: Gut microbiota plays a vital role in maintaining normal intestinal peristalsis, and disruptions caused by antibiotics or opioid anesthetics during surgical procedures can impact intestinal motility. However, the precise mechanisms behind this dysbiosis are still not fully understood. This review focuses on the effects of gut microbiota and their metabolites on postoperative intestinal motility, specifically the regulation of the enteric nervous system, 5-hydroxytryptamine neurotransmitter, and aryl hydrocarbon receptor.

Summary: Research has shown that surgical trauma during intestinal surgery can trigger ATP release, leading to enteric gliosis and inflammation, potentially resulting in impaired motility in postoperative ileus (POI). A novel P2X2-dependent pathway of ATP-induced enteric gliosis, inflammation, and dysmotility has been identified, suggesting that interventions targeting enteric glial P2X2 receptors may represent a novel therapy for treating POI and immune-driven intestinal motility disorders.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the risk factors and develop a nomogram for predicting postoperative ileus (PPOI) in patients with Crohn's disease (CD) who underwent partial intestinal resection. The results showed that disease duration, operation time, lowest mean arterial pressure, fluid balance, postoperative infusion, lowest potassium concentration, and procalcitonin level were independent risk factors for PPOI in CD patients. The nomogram based on these risk factors had good discriminative ability and clinical effectiveness.

Summary: This study identified trajectories of gastrointestinal recovery within a colorectal surgery enhanced recovery pathway and found that trajectory 1 had the best clinical outcomes, while trajectory 3 had the worst. The I-FEED score on postoperative day 1 predicted the trajectory, and the findings may assist in decision making for early discharge within colorectal enhanced recovery pathways.

Summary: Delayed bowel function and postoperative ileus are common gastrointestinal complications after surgery. Currently, there is a lack of reliable imaging methods for diagnosing these complications. Gastric point of care ultrasound (POCUS) may hold promise as a noninvasive and simple bedside imaging technique to help identify colorectal patients at risk, but further research is needed to confirm its effectiveness.

Summary: The gastrointestinal tract's movements are regulated by the presence of food and play a crucial role in digestion. The lack of PIEZO2 in humans leads to impaired bowel sensation and motility. In mice, Piezo2 in dorsal root neurons is required for sensing gut content and slows down food transit rates in various parts of the gut. This study uncovers the mechanosensory mechanisms that regulate gut transit and have important implications for digestion and waste removal.

Summary: Paclitaxel (PTX), Docetaxel (DTX) and Cabazitaxel (CTX) are taxanes derived from plants of the Taxus genus. They are used in clinical practice for the treatment of various types of cancer. Nanotechnology improves the therapeutic efficacy of taxanes by increasing their solubility through nanoencapsulation and allowing for co-delivery with other chemotherapeutics. Nanosystems also enhance accumulation of taxanes in cancerous tissues and respond to stimuli in the tumor microenvironment. The success of nanoencapsulation research led to the FDA approval of PTX-linked albumin nanosystem Abraxane (R).

Summary: Four options exist for the management of acutely injured cattle in Ireland: treatment, on-farm emergency slaughter (OFES), casualty slaughter (CS), or euthanasia. A survey of farmers revealed that most of them had a positive view of OFES, but there were concerns about the availability and cost of this option. Increasing availability and reducing cost of OFES could help decrease the number of cattle going for CS.
