Summary: The study found a high prevalence of adult ADHD and substance use disorder comorbidity among bipolar disorder patients, with a significant association between adult ADHD and earlier onset of mood episodes in bipolar disorder. Further multicenter studies with larger sample sizes are needed to increase awareness of this comorbidity in hospital settings.

Summary: Individuals with common mental disorders (depression, anxiety, phobia) are twice as likely to report an alcohol use disorder compared to those without common mental disorders. There were no clear differences in the odds of having an AUD among different types of CMDs, and study characteristics did not provide clear explanations for heterogeneity in results. No distinct patterns were found in the associations between having a CMD and binge drinking or alcohol consumption, respectively.

Summary: This study used network analysis to examine the relationships between symptoms of substance use disorders (SUD) and other psychiatric conditions. The findings support the current diagnostic classification system, but also suggest the need for future research to include a broader range of symptoms and explore changes in symptom networks during treatment.

Summary: This study found that individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) have higher rates of cigarette smoking and lower quit ratios compared to those without SUDs, both in cancer patients and non-cancer patients in the United States. Addressing SUDs and their impact on smoking cessation is crucial for improving health and treatment outcomes in cancer patients.

Summary: A study found that a large proportion of adults using Schedule II stimulant drugs are also exposed to other central nervous system (CNS)-active drugs, which may lead to tolerance, withdrawal effects, or non-medical use. These multi-drug combinations lack approved indications and limited clinical trial testing, and discontinuation may be challenging.

Summary: This study examined the longitudinal associations between depressive, anxiety, and substance use disorders. The findings revealed reciprocal relationships between these disorders and highlighted gender differences, with females being more susceptible to depressive and anxiety disorders, and males being more vulnerable to substance use disorders. Early treatment and comprehensive psychosocial interventions are crucial in preventing chronicity and further maladjustment.

Summary: This narrative review discusses the comorbidity of ADHD and SUDs and the complexity of treating these disorders with MPH. While MPH is considered a first-line pharmacotherapy for ADHD, its addictive potential makes it especially problematic for patients with SUDs. Careful diagnosis and treatment, along with responsible prescription practices and monitoring, are essential for safely and effectively treating ADHD with MPH in patients with SUDs.
