Stress shielding after total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains an unsolved issue. Various patterns of mechanical stress appear according to the type of femoral stem used. To compare differences in mechanical stress conditions between Zweymuller type and fit-and-fill type stems, finite element analysis (FEA) was performed. Differences in bone mineral density (BMD) changes in the femur were also compared. Maximum stress was confirmed in Gruen zone 4, whereas zone 1 had the minimum amount of stress with both types of implant. The Zweymuller stem group had less mechanical stress and lower BMD in zone 7 than the fit-and-fill stem group. In conclusion, differences in mechanical stress may be related to changes in BMD after THA. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Effects of changes in whole-body alignment on ipsilateral knee pain after total hip arthroplasty

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of changes in whole-body alignment on ipsilateral knee pain in patients after total hip arthroplasty. The results showed that half of the patients experienced a reduction in ipsilateral knee pain following the surgery, but some patients still had residual knee pain. Postoperative knee pain was associated with K-L grade, preoperative knee pain visual analog scale, and preoperative sagittal vertical axis.

Complete Capsular Repair Using a Knotless Barbed Suture With a Mini-direct Lateral Approach for Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Technique Note and Feasibility Study

Summary: This article presents a detailed technical discussion on the complete capsular repair using knotless barbed sutures for mini-direct lateral approach THA. The results show a successful complete capsular repair in 93.3% of cases, with an average operative time of 106 +/- 20 minutes and an average intraoperative bleeding of 369 +/- 241 mL. No major complications occurred both intra and postoperatively.

A rare case of intra-articular synovial sarcoma of the hip joint: a case report with intra-articular findings via hip arthroscopy

Summary: Although synovial sarcoma is a common soft tissue sarcoma, primary intra-articular cases are extremely rare. We report a case of synovial sarcoma arising from the hip joint, treated with hip arthroscopy. Histological findings confirmed the diagnosis, and adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy were performed. This is the first case of intra-articular synovial sarcoma of the hip joint excised via hip arthroscopy.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the changes in blood biochemical markers between infected and non-infected patients after joint replacement surgery to understand the characteristics of infection. By analyzing the preoperative and postoperative blood biochemical markers at 3, 6, and 12 months, it was possible to differentiate between infected and non-infected patients. Infected patients in the high-risk group were more likely to experience postoperative recurrence.

Effect of implant composition on periprosthetic bone mineral density after total hip arthroplasty

Summary: This study compared the changes in periprosthetic bone mineral density (BMD) after total hip arthroplasty (THA) using proximal fixation concept stems made of different titanium alloys. The results showed that the alpha + beta titanium alloys stem resulted in a significantly higher rate of BMD loss in zones 6 and 7 compared with the beta titanium alloys stem.
