Elevated air temperatures in riparian ecosystems along ephemeral streams: The role of housing density

The semiarid southwestern United States is an area of rapid population growth. Urban development is encroaching upon many ecosystems, including riparian areas. Because most stream miles in the southwestern United States occur along ephemeral streams, recognizing how these ecosystems are affected by increasing urban land covers is imperative. In this study, we recorded air temperature at 30 cm above the ground surface within riparian ecosystems along nine ephemeral stream reaches in three levels of housing density: High Density (HD: >13 houses/hectare); Moderate Density (MD: 4-8 houses/hectare); Low Density (LD: <1 house/hectare) for two years in a rapidly growing city in southern Arizona. Annual and seasonal average diurnal 30-min air temperatures for each treatment show that HD air temperatures were consistently higher than LD and MD temperatures (similar to 0.5-1.5 degrees C) during the late-evening/early-morning and midday hours. Winter temperatures had the largest differences between HD and LD sites, as much as 1.4 degrees C. Because physiological activity in these riparian ecosystems is largely temperature-dependent, temperature shifts associated with increased housing density could result in major ecosystem changes in these semiarid areas. Understanding stream bank erosion and deposition in Iowa, USA: A seven year study along streams in different regions with different riparian land-uses

Assessment of Two Adjacent Mountainous Riparian Areas along Nestos River Tributaries of Greece

New Technologies to Assess and Map an Urban Riparian Area in Drama, Greece, and Determine Opportunity Sites for Litter Traps

Summary: In this study, new technological approaches were implemented to assess and map environmental variables and find optimal locations for nature-based solutions in urban riparian areas. The approaches included the use of unmanned aerial and underwater vehicles to capture surface and underwater environmental conditions. The collected data were used to develop spatial datasets and maps that identified the best opportunity sites for litter traps. Such traps are beneficial for managing anthropogenic litter in riparian areas.

First measurements of electric field variability during fog events in the United Arab Emirates

Neo-taphonomy of striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) in Israel

Summary: This study investigated whether the prey of striped hyenas has adapted to the change in the natural environment caused by human activities, particularly artificial light at night (ALAN). The results showed that ALAN had no impact on the diet or den distribution of the hyenas in central Israel. The study also found that domestic animals were the most common prey, and there were also some vegetative species in their diet. Overall, the feeding behavior of striped hyenas is influenced by geographical region, habitat, and human activities.

Evaluation of IMERG precipitation product over various temporal scales in a semi-arid region of southern Iran

Summary: This study evaluated the IMERG satellite-based precipitation product in the Fars province of Iran using daily rain gauges as reference data. The results showed that the product tends to overestimate light rainfall and underestimate heavy rainfall, with the best performance in the 40-80 mm/day range. The accuracy of the product varies by month and is less biased in months with milder temperatures. Additionally, there was a higher correlation in mid-elevated areas, positive bias in low-elevated areas, and negative bias in high-elevated areas. Longer time scales showed considerable improvement in the IMERG estimates.
