Summary: Plastic debris is widely present in freshwater ecosystems globally, with lakes and reservoirs in densely populated and urbanized areas and large lakes and reservoirs with elevated deposition areas, long water-retention times and high levels of anthropogenic influence being particularly vulnerable. The concentrations of plastic vary among lakes, with some reaching or even exceeding those reported in marine areas collecting large amounts of debris such as the subtropical oceanic gyres. This study highlights the importance of including lakes and reservoirs in addressing plastic pollution for effective pollution management and the preservation of lake ecosystem services.

Summary: Seasonal climate forecasts provide probabilistic predictions of meteorological variables for future months. Integrating these forecasts with hydrologic and lake models can generate seasonal forecasts of discharge and water temperature. While seasonal forecasts for discharge show some skill, forecasts for water temperature perform better in natural lakes compared to reservoirs, suggesting human water control and water depth can impact predictability. Further investigation is needed to determine the role of lead-in conditions in skillful water temperature predictions.

Summary: This study used ICESat and ICESat-2 altimetry data to investigate global water level changes for 22,008 lakes/reservoirs greater than 1 km2. The results showed that 77.56% of the lakes/reservoirs experienced rising water levels from 2003 to 2021. Globally, 78.84% of lakes exhibited a rising water level, while the proportion for reservoirs was only 56.01%. Large-scale rising water levels were detected in the Tibetan Plateau, the Mississippi River basin, and high-latitude regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The study also found a negative relationship between the percentage of water level rise and population density in global river basins and 11 hotspots. The findings suggest that natural processes contribute to the rising inland water levels, while human activities can balance the rise through reservoir regulation. The study highlights the underestimation of global water level rise by existing datasets and emphasizes the importance of including small lakes/reservoirs in studying global hydrological cycle and water resource management.

The relative influence of key processes mainly depended on lake latitude and depth.

Summary: This study evaluates the TAO/TRITON array using data denial assimilation experiments and assesses its impact on El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) predictions. The results show that assimilating TAO/TRITON data generally improves comparisons with other in situ observations, especially for temperature. It is found that TAO/TRITON data can deepen the mixed layer depth, amplify the El Nino downwelling signal, and improve the amplitude of the ENSO signal.
