Renewable poly(amidoamine)/hemicellulose hydrogels were prepared from O-acetylated galactoglucomannan (AcGGM)-rich biomass and shown to display a significantly high adsorption capacity for Cu2+, Cd2+, Pb-2+,Pb- Zn2+, Ni2+, Co2+, and . Two different acrylamido end-capped poly(amidoamine) oligomers (PAA) were prepared and covalently immobilized onto an in situ formed polysaccharide network via water-based free radical graft copolymerization and cross-linking. The synthetic approach was shown to be viable when using a highly purified AcGGM or a crude spruce hydrolysate, an AcGGM and lignin containing biomass fraction as a reactant. Homogeneous reaction mixtures were obtained in both cases with polysaccharide contents up to 20% by weight. Oscillatory shear measurements indicated a predominantly solid-like behavior of the hydrogels with an increase in shear storage modulus with increasing cross-link density. The mechanical integrity of the PAA/hemicellulose hydrogels showed higher water swelling capacity and less fragility than the parent PAA hydrogels and they retained the heavy metal ion absorption ability of the PAA component, even in the presence of the least purified hemicellulose fraction. Polyamidoamines Derived from Natural α-Amino Acids as Effective Flame Retardants for Cotton

Alessandro Beduini, Federico Carosio, Paolo Ferruti, Elisabetta Ranucci, Jenny Alongi

Summary: In this study, bioinspired polyamidoamines (PAAs) were synthesized from natural alpha-amino acids and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide as flame retardants for cotton. The results showed that PAAs formed carbon- and oxygen-rich, porous chars with a graphitic structure at 350 degrees C, and exhibited flame extinguishing properties in horizontal flame spread tests.

L-Arginine-Derived Polyamidoamine Oligomers Bearing at Both Ends β-Cyclodextrin Units as pH-Sensitive Curcumin Carriers

Sofia Treccani, Jenny Alongi, Amedea Manfredi, Paolo Ferruti, Roberta Cavalli, Giuseppina Raffaini, Elisabetta Ranucci

Summary: The aza-Michael polyaddition of L-arginine and N,N'-methylene-bis-acrylamide yields the biocompatible and easily cell-internalized polyamidoamine ARGO7. Encapsulation of curcumin using ARGO7 precursors can significantly enhance solubility, stability, and controlled release of the drug, with release rate depending on pH values.

Synthesis of Biocompatible and Biodegradable Polyamidoamines Microgels via a Simple and Reliable Statistical Approach

Nicolo Mauro, Gaetano Giammona, Elisabetta Ranucci, Paolo Ferruti

Summary: Polyamidoamines (PAAs) are biocompatible, biodegradable polymers that have great potential for pharmaceutical applications. A statistical approach was developed to fine-tune the aza-Michael polyaddition stoichiometry for obtaining microgels or hyperbranched polymers in a one-pot reaction. The synthesized biocompatible microgels have tunable size distribution and well-designed end-chains, showing great potential for medical applications.

On the Suitability of Phosphonate-Containing Polyamidoamines as Cotton Flame Retardants

Alessandro Beduini, Domenico Albanese, Federico Carosio, Amedea Manfredi, Elisabetta Ranucci, Paolo Ferruti, Jenny Alongi

Summary: A novel polyamidoamine with a disulfide group and phosphonate groups per repeat unit (M-PCASS) was synthesized and its flame retardant efficacy for cotton was investigated. The results showed that M-PCASS had better flame retardant performance than M-CYSS, with no afterglow in horizontal flame spread tests and afterglow suppression in vertical flame spread tests. In oxygen-consumption cone calorimetry tests, M-PCASS reduced heat release rate, CO2 emission, and smoke release of cotton, leaving a residue. These findings suggest that M-PCASS may be suitable for flame retardant applications requiring smoke suppression and reduction of total gas released.

Copper-mediated synthesis of temperature-responsive poly(N-acryloyl glycinamide) polymers: a step towards greener and simple polymerisation

Nikola Krivankova, Kerem Kaya, Wouter van der Wijngaart, Ulrica Edlund

Summary: Stimuli-responsive materials with reversible supramolecular networks controlled by a temperature change have attracted attention in various fields. In this study, the researchers investigated the polymerization of N-acryloyl glycinamide monomer using single-electron transfer reversible-deactivation radical polymerization, and studied its effect on the cloud point of the resulting polymers. They achieved a high conversion rate within a short period of time using a copper wire catalyst in water media. The synthesized PNAGA material exhibited a sharp phase transition, eliminating the need for inert conditions and deoxygenation.
