Summary: Garlic polysaccharide (PS) was extracted from garlic using hot-water extraction, and acetylated garlic polysaccharide (AcPS) and garlic polysaccharide-zinc complex (ZnPS) were synthesized. The modifications successfully enhanced the antioxidant activities, with AcPS and ZnPS showing stronger scavenging abilities on hydroxyl and superoxide anion radicals compared to PS. AcPS also exhibited significantly stronger inhibitory effect on lipid peroxidation, indicating its potential as an antioxidant.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of gum tragacanth from two different species, combined with cellulose nanofibers, on the physico-mechanical and structural properties of PVA nanocomposite film. Increasing the content of both gums decreased water solubility and water vapor permeability of the films, with 30% GT-P showing the most significant decrease. The optimum treatment was found to be the film containing 10% GT-P, with the highest tensile strength and elongation at break.

Summary: The study evaluated the effectiveness of low-cost polyacrylamide/starch hybrid hydrogels in removing organic pollutants from wastewater, particularly phenol, and found that the hydrogel with the lowest amount of starch and crosslinking agent had the highest phenol adsorption capacity. The adsorption isotherm data fit well with Langmuir and Freundlich models, with the Freundlich isotherm model showing the best fit for the adsorption process. Desorption study revealed a minimum of about 60% phenol release, indicating the potential reusability for wastewater treatment.

Summary: This study explores a method of chitosan decomposition using peroxycarbonic acid solution under high CO2 pressure. The results show that chitosan oligomers with suitable molecular weight can be obtained even with low hydrogen peroxide concentrations and short processing times. The obtained polymer exhibits good ability to form porous matrices, but its thermal stability is somewhat decreased.

Summary: Galactomannans are functionalized biopolymers widely used for their diverse applications. In this study, highly viscous solutions were obtained by treating guar gum with chloromethyl oxirane, resulting in the formation of new 1,3-diethereal linkages. Varying the amount of chloromethyl oxirane affected the rheological properties, with lower amounts leading to improved viscosity and higher amounts resulting in insoluble products. The modified galactomannans showed resistance to acid, salt, and alkali, making them suitable for various end-use applications.

Summary: A water-resistant adhesive for plywood panels for engineered wood floors was developed using thermal-chemically treated wheat flour, polyvinyl alcohol, and polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate as the cross-linker. Studies showed that the water resistance of the thermal-SDS-treated WF-based adhesive was significantly improved, mainly attributed to the formation of a three-dimensional crosslinking network, Maillard reaction, and increased crosslinking.

Summary: A novel polyamidoamine with a disulfide group and phosphonate groups per repeat unit (M-PCASS) was synthesized and its flame retardant efficacy for cotton was investigated. The results showed that M-PCASS had better flame retardant performance than M-CYSS, with no afterglow in horizontal flame spread tests and afterglow suppression in vertical flame spread tests. In oxygen-consumption cone calorimetry tests, M-PCASS reduced heat release rate, CO2 emission, and smoke release of cotton, leaving a residue. These findings suggest that M-PCASS may be suitable for flame retardant applications requiring smoke suppression and reduction of total gas released.

Summary: Stimuli-responsive materials with reversible supramolecular networks controlled by a temperature change have attracted attention in various fields. In this study, the researchers investigated the polymerization of N-acryloyl glycinamide monomer using single-electron transfer reversible-deactivation radical polymerization, and studied its effect on the cloud point of the resulting polymers. They achieved a high conversion rate within a short period of time using a copper wire catalyst in water media. The synthesized PNAGA material exhibited a sharp phase transition, eliminating the need for inert conditions and deoxygenation.
