It has long been recognized that dyes other than disperse dyes would play a much larger industrial role if they could be applied to poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabrics at low temperatures. This research is related to a new process for the dyeing of hydrophobic PET with hydrophilic acid dyestuffs. The process is based on low-pressure plasma polymerization using an ammonia/acetylene gaseous mixture, which provides a nanoporous plasma coating containing accessible amine groups. Surface functionalization and crosslinking have been analyzed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The color strength (absorption coefficient/scattering coefficient) of dyed PET is evidently improved by the attachment of dye molecules to the plasma polymer coating. The dyeability strongly depends on the plasma exposure time, gaseous mixture, and energy input. The permanency of the bond between the dye molecules and the plasma film can be characterized as the fastness property of dyed PET. The stability of the plasma coating has been examined with an abrasion and pilling tester. (c) 2008 Wiley Periodicials, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 111: 2545-2552, 2009

Summary: This study focuses on the development of cost-effective staple fibre yarns made from flax tow for use in composite materials. The mechanical properties of the resulting composites were comparable to those made from high-quality UD flax roving. Industrial processing of the fabrics into composite laminates showed clear advantages in lightweight construction potential and mechanical properties.

pH-Responsive Chitosan/Alginate Polyelectrolyte Complexes on Electrospun PLGA Nanofibers for Controlled Drug Release

Jean Schoeller, Fabian Itel, Karin Wuertz-Kozak, Sandra Gaiser, Nicolas Luisier, Dirk Hegemann, Stephen J. Ferguson, Giuseppino Fortunato, Rene M. Rossi

Summary: Surface functionalization of electrospun nanofibers allows for the introduction of additional functionalities while retaining high porosity and surface-to-volume ratio. In this study, chitosan and alginate were sequentially deposited on PLGA nanofibers to form a polyelectrolyte complex for controlled release of ibuprofen. Chitosan with a positive surface charge regulated the interactions between the drug and the coating, resulting in slower release at acidic pH compared to neutral pH.

Biomimetic approaches towards lightweight composite structures for car interior parts

Katrin Greta Hoffmann, Katharina Haag, Joerg Muessig

Summary: Natural fibre-reinforced plastic composites made from fleeces and felts are commonly used in automotive interior parts due to their good density specific mechanical properties and low carbon footprint. By employing a biomimetic technology-pull approach, natural fibre-reinforced polypropylene plates with improved lightweight potential were produced, with the best results achieved using a sandwich structure surrounding a needle felt core.

Summary: Stinging nettle is a perennial crop with low fertilizer and pesticide requirements, well adapted to various environmental conditions. It has been successfully grown in Europe and has the potential to replace artificial fibers in industries such as textiles and automotive. This review provides a historical perspective on nettle varietal selection, as well as an overview of its biology, adaptability, genetics, and cultivation and processing features. The potential uses in industrial processes and future avenues of research on this high-value plant for the global fiber market are also discussed.

Summary: This study examines the role of bimodal sensory evaluation in biobased composite perception and identifies the perceptual relationships and components of beauty, naturality, and value. It is observed that different clusters of biobased composites can be formed based on the dominance and interplay of visual and tactile senses. The attributes of Natural, Beautiful, and Valuable are positively correlated and influenced by both visual and tactile characteristics, while attributes like Complex, Interesting, and Unusual are dominated by visual stimuli.

Assembly of Rolled-Up Collagen Constructs on Porous Alumina Textiles

Deepanjalee Dutta, Nina Graupner, Jorg Muessig, Dorothea Brueggemann

Summary: In this study, a new method for preparing free-standing collagen constructs with rolled-up architecture was reported. Collagen nanofibers were self-assembled and cross-linked on modified alumina textiles, resulting in the spontaneous rolling up and detachment of the collagen constructs. The mechanical properties of the wet collagen scaffolds were evaluated, and the roll-up effect was found to be influenced by the surface charge and protein charge on the textiles, as well as the porous architecture of the nanofibers. Further research is needed to develop this roll-up effect into a reproducible biofabrication process for tissue engineering.
