Summary: In this study, poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) was functionalised with itaconic anhydride (IA) via melt grafting. The ratio of IA to dicumyl peroxide (DCP) was found to be crucial for the reaction outcome, and low reagent concentration and conversion resulted in the lowest effective rate constant.

Summary: The surface of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was functionalized through a three-step process involving microwave plasma treatment, reaction with mercaptosilanes, and thiol-ene photopolymerization. The purpose of using a bio-based monomer was to give antibacterial and antifouling properties to the PDMS surface. Grafting and photopolymerization were successfully confirmed through various analytical methods, particularly X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy.

Summary: The self-assembling features of amphiphilic N-annulated perylene bisimides (N-PBIs) 1-4 in water were investigated experimentally and theoretically. The hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratio, determined by the oligo(ethylene) glycol (OEG) chains in the monomers, plays a significant role in the enthalpy of self-assembly. Molecular dynamic simulations revealed the influence of the initial arrangement of hydrophilic side chains and water-side chain interactions on the enthalpy contribution and overall stability of the aggregated species in water.

Summary: Semiconducting polymer thin films were successfully grown using a DC plasma-polymerized technique. The structural and morphological analysis revealed an organized structure in the plasma-polymerized thin films. The conduction mechanism in the films was found to be predominantly controlled by SCLC, as determined from the I-V characteristics.

Summary: This study investigates the aging of plasma activated plasma polymer films and compares it to the aging of plasma activated silicone elastomer. The results show that both materials reach a super-hydrophilic state after plasma treatment, but the wettability of the coatings significantly decreases during aging.

Summary: The postpolymerization modification of acrylic acid copolymers is demonstrated in this study. A library of functional acrylate polymers was produced by direct addition of polymeric carboxylic acid to allene sulfonamides. Sterically congested methacrylic acid copolymers and acrylic acid copolymers were found to participate in the postpolymerization modification process with good conversions.

Summary: The chemoselective ring-opening copolymerization (ROCP) of MVL with CL has been achieved using an organophosphazene/urea binary catalyst, resulting in functional P(MVL-co-CL) copolyesters with a modifiable double bond. The pendent double bond of the copolyesters can be post-functionalized by the thiol-Michael addition reaction to obtain thiolated copolyesters.

Summary: Recent reports have shown that altering structural variables of non-conjugated pendant electroactive polymers (NCPEPs), such as stereoregularity, nature of the pendant group, and length of the spacer, is significant for tuning their optoelectronic properties. The post-polymerization functionalization method allows for selectively studying the effects of tuning these variables, but its scope for tuning the pendant group itself remains largely unexplored. This work investigates the compatibility of the photochemical thiol-ene post-polymerization method with various pendant groups and discusses the limitations and effects on the optoelectronic properties of the functionalized NCPEPs.

Summary: This study focuses on the development of cost-effective staple fibre yarns made from flax tow for use in composite materials. The mechanical properties of the resulting composites were comparable to those made from high-quality UD flax roving. Industrial processing of the fabrics into composite laminates showed clear advantages in lightweight construction potential and mechanical properties.

Summary: Surface functionalization of electrospun nanofibers allows for the introduction of additional functionalities while retaining high porosity and surface-to-volume ratio. In this study, chitosan and alginate were sequentially deposited on PLGA nanofibers to form a polyelectrolyte complex for controlled release of ibuprofen. Chitosan with a positive surface charge regulated the interactions between the drug and the coating, resulting in slower release at acidic pH compared to neutral pH.

Summary: This study examines the role of bimodal sensory evaluation in biobased composite perception and identifies the perceptual relationships and components of beauty, naturality, and value. It is observed that different clusters of biobased composites can be formed based on the dominance and interplay of visual and tactile senses. The attributes of Natural, Beautiful, and Valuable are positively correlated and influenced by both visual and tactile characteristics, while attributes like Complex, Interesting, and Unusual are dominated by visual stimuli.

Summary: In this study, a new method for preparing free-standing collagen constructs with rolled-up architecture was reported. Collagen nanofibers were self-assembled and cross-linked on modified alumina textiles, resulting in the spontaneous rolling up and detachment of the collagen constructs. The mechanical properties of the wet collagen scaffolds were evaluated, and the roll-up effect was found to be influenced by the surface charge and protein charge on the textiles, as well as the porous architecture of the nanofibers. Further research is needed to develop this roll-up effect into a reproducible biofabrication process for tissue engineering.
