Summary: Carbodiimide polymers with bulky branched aliphatic and octadecyl side chains were studied for their solid and solution properties. It was found that polycarbodiimides containing octadecyl and branched alkyl side chains exhibited different thermal events at around 30 degrees C, and increased branched alkyl side chains led to decreased thermal stability. Lyotropic liquid crystallinity was observed in branched copolymers with a combination of branched alkyl side chains and octadecyl functional groups in different ratios.

Summary: In this paper, a novel method is proposed to solve the multi-component phase separation issue in polyamide 6 (PA6) by synthesizing a poly (amide-block-aramid) block copolymer and dissolving it in molten epsilon-caprolactam. The thermodynamic, morphological, and crystalline properties of the resulting composite polymer blends were easily manipulated by adjusting the loading ratios, showing excellent miscibility at optimized conditions. The overall mechanical properties of these PA6-based polymer composites are expected to be satisfactory for applications in the modern plastic industry and other emerging areas.

Summary: This study presents a series of liquid-crystalline polymers with α-cyanostilbene pendants attached to polymer backbone by varying lengths of ethylene glycol spacers, allowing for tuning of columnar ordering and fluorescence emission wavelength. By elongating the spacer, the columnar dimensions increase and the fluorescence emission blue-shifts gradually, providing insights into the influence of spacer length in liquid-crystalline polymers.

Summary: The directed self-assembly of liquid crystal polymers has superior optical properties compared to conventional isotropic optical materials. However, the exploration of reflective liquid crystalline polymeric films has been limited due to production challenges. In this study, we investigate stacked polymer cholesteric liquid crystal thin films as a means to generate reflective diffractive optics for circularly polarized light. We present three different exemplar cases to demonstrate the potential of these unique thin polymer films.

Summary: The research presents a new digital photocuring method for the fast fabrication of LCE artificial muscles capable of complex motions, eliminating the need for traditional mesogen alignment techniques. Drawing inspiration from muscle motion principles, strategically arranged bending modules are designed using spatiotemporal digital light to achieve highly designable motions for LCEs.

Summary: This study reports the polymerization of liquid crystalline polymeric fibers in non-spherical droplets and micro-channels, resulting in curvilinear and randomly networked filaments as well as highly aligned linear fibers, respectively. The controlled molecular assembly achieved through micro-confinement suggests a unique opportunity for programming material architecture.

Summary: Liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) are emerging material actuators that undergo macroscopic dimensional changes when stimulated. In this study, LCE is prepared using thiol-Michael/thiol-ene reactions, enabling actuation at or below ambient temperature. The alignment of LCE is achieved through mechanical alignment and 3D printing, allowing for high strain and tunable thermotropic response.

Summary: In this study, perfluorinated segments were introduced to increase the structural complexity of side-chain liquid crystalline polymers (SCLCP), and the interaction between the main chain and mesogens was investigated. By adjusting the length of spacers or perfluoroalkyl segments, different mesophases with complex chain packing structures were achieved.

Summary: In this study, the performances of connectors made of various glass fibre/liquid crystalline polyester composites for burn-in tests were analyzed using mechanical testing and finite element analyses. Material characterizations and fatigue testing were conducted, and the 40 wt% milled glass fiber/liquid crystalline polyester composite was identified as the most suitable material for the burn-in test board connector structure.

Summary: A series of aromatic polyimides were synthesized using the one-pot high-temperature catalytic polycondensation method in molten benzoic acid. The properties of these polyimides and the influence of the synthesis method on the crystalline phase formation were investigated. The performance of polyimide PI-DA in membrane separation was compared with the commercially available polyetherimide Ultem 1000(TM).

Summary: The study synthesized a series of phthalocyanine-based ionic liquid-crystalline polysiloxanes, characterized their thermal and liquid-crystalline behavior, and investigated the relationship between dielectric properties and LC phase. The prepared ER fluids based on ILCPs showed enhanced ER performance with increasing ionic phthalocyanine moieties, and exhibited synergetic rearrangement and orientation in real-time response experiments. Compatibility between the ILCPs' polysiloxane matrix and the polysiloxane-based silicon oil contributed to good sedimentation property of the ERFs.

Summary: An optical organic vapor sensor array utilizing AIE/polymer composite microwires is fabricated using capillary-bridge-mediated assembly method, allowing for rapid detection and identification of different organic vapors based on swelling-induced fluorescence change. Molecular design of the polymer side chains and AIE molecules can enhance sensitivity to subparts per million level, due to the similar polarity between the AIE group and vapor molecules.
