Summary: The antibiotic therapy of Mycobacterium abscessus infections is difficult due to the pathogen's resistance to available antimicrobials. However, the study suggests that the aminoglycoside apramycin shows potent bactericidal activity against M. abscessus and may be a promising treatment option.

Summary: By analyzing two-dimensional images of fluorescent or Congo red-stained M. abscessus colony-biofilms grown on a membrane, we found that colony-biofilms of smooth and rough variants of M. abscessus responded differently to rifabutin and bedaquiline, highlighting the importance of morphotype in addressing antibiotic treatment for biofilm-related infections in patients.

Summary: The study suggests that epigenetic modifiers acquired through horizontal gene transfer can lead to sudden increases in the pathogenic potential of specific environmental clones, while allopatric parallel evolution during chronic lung infection promotes rapid increases in virulence. The findings indicate that constrained pathogenic evolution is observed while person-to-person transmission remains indirect.

Summary: This study evaluated the colocalization of an inhaled liposomal amikacin suspension (ALIS) with intracellular Mabs, and measured its intracellular anti-Mabs activity. The results showed that ALIS can colocalize with Mabs inside cells and has antibacterial activity against intracellular Mabs, suggesting its potential use for treating Mabs pulmonary infections.

Summary: Our study showed that the SCV of Klebsiella pneumoniae transitioned to a mucoid colony when exposed to subinhibitory concentrations of ciprofloxacin. The higher serum resistance of mucoid colonies may be related to the UmuC gene, while the increased intracellular survival of SCV may be related to the IcmK family type IV secretion proteins.

Summary: M. abscessus is an emerging pathogen causing severe pulmonary infections. Mutations in glycopeptidolipid (GPL) synthesis genes are associated with invasive, non-remitting infections and a severe clinical course. However, the study found that GPL defects did not confer clinically significant antibiotic resistance independently of other molecular changes.

Summary: Mycobacterium abscessus poses challenges in treatment due to high drug resistance and limited effective therapies. The study identified epetraborole as a potential candidate for M. abscessus therapy, showing significant activity against various strains and clinical isolates in vitro, and greater efficacy than tigecycline in a zebrafish infection model.

Summary: Pulmonary infections caused by Mycobacterium abscessus (MAB) have been increasing in incidence. The use of bacteriophages (phages) in clinics is emerging as a novel treatment strategy for drug-resistant MAB infections. This study deepens our understanding of phage-mycobacteria interaction mechanisms and identifies therapeutic phages that can lower bacterial fitness and attenuate MAB intrinsic resistance mechanism via targeted therapy.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a threat to the prevention and treatment of infections caused by microorganisms. In this study, a method was developed to accurately determine the genotype-phenotype associations for putative antibiotic-resistant polymorphisms in Mycobacterium abscessus.

Summary: Mycobacterium abscessus, a common pathogen in nontuberculous mycobacterial lung diseases, has different subspecies with varying drug susceptibilities. Macrolides and amikacin are commonly used drugs, but their efficacy is limited against resistant strains. New drugs show promising in vitro activity, but further validation is needed.

Summary: Drug delivery systems (DDS) face challenges such as high systemic uptake and low bioavailability. This study developed a new DDS using chitosan (Cs) particles and composite films to encapsulate gentamicin (GtS). Lysozyme can degrade chitosan to release GtS, and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) can increase drug encapsulation efficiency. Cross-linking can prevent premature drug release.
