Two clinical cases in which Portland cement (PC) was applied as a medicament after pulpotomy of mandibular primary molars in children are presented. Pulpotomy using PC was carried out in two mandibular first molars and one mandibular second molar, which were further followed-up. At the 3, 6 and 12-month follow-up appointments, clinical and radiographic examinations of the pulpotomized teeth and their periradicular area revealed that the treatments were successful in maintaining the teeth asymptomatic and preserving pulpal vitality. Additionally, the formation of a dentin bridge immediately below the PC could be observed in the three molars treated. PC may be considered as an effective alternative for primary molar pulpotomies, at least in a short-term period. Randomized clinical trials with human teeth are required in order to determine the suitability of PC before unlimited clinical use can be recommended.

Summary: The study compared dimensional alterations of dental arches in children with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate before and after different techniques of primary plastic surgeries. Results showed that cheiloplasty and one-stage palatoplasty resulted in smaller growth of maxilla compared to cheiloplasty and two-stage palatoplasty in terms of linear measurements (T-T' and I-CC') and total area of the dental arches.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a new pulp capping multilayer membrane with chitosan and evaluated its physicochemical and biological properties. The membranes showed satisfactory properties including alkaline pH, calcium release, and high radiopacity, with good cytocompatibility demonstrated in vitro. Further in vivo and clinical studies are needed to confirm the suitability of these membranes for human teeth applications.

Cleide Felicio Carvalho Carrara, Paula Karine Jorge, Beatriz Costa, Maria Aparecida Andrade Moreira Machado, Thais Marchini Oliveira, Gisele da Silva Dalben

Summary: This paper presents customized trays for babies with different types of cleft lip and palate, which are used in the outpatient routine at Hospital of Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies/USP (HRAC/USP). The trays improve the quality of impressions and accurately reproduce the anatomical features of dental arches in babies with oral clefts.

Dentists? Self-evaluated Ability in Diagnosing and Updating About Pulpotomy

Beatriz Della Terra Mouco Garrido, Luciana Lourenco Ribeiro Vitor, Thiago Cruvinel, Maria Aparecida Andrade Moreira Machado, Thais Marchini Oliveira, Natalino Lourenco Neto

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge of different dental professionals' profiles in Brazil on diagnosing and indicating pulpotomy in primary teeth and how these groups updated on this theme. The study found that professors and specialists paid more attention to updates on this subject, while other professionals were more interested in social media updates. The study also found that professionals directly involved in pediatric dentistry had more capability to diagnose and treat cases of pulpotomy.

A Narrative Review on Non-Invasive Diagnostic Tools for the Analysis of Dental Arches in Orofacial Cleft Patients

Paula Karine Jorge, Eloa Cristina Passucci Ambrosio, Maria Aparecida de Andrade Moreira Machado, Thais Marchini Oliveira, Ana Lucia Pompeia Fraga de Almeida, Simone Soares

Summary: This narrative review provides a feature on the three-dimensional tools available for the assessment of dental arches in children with orofacial cleft and mixed dentition. It concludes that digital tools, such as benchtop scanners, are reproducible and reliable in evaluating the dental arches of cleft lip, palate, and mixed dentition patients. These tools also allow sustainable storage and manipulation without the use of ionizing radiation, contributing to environmental preservation.

Summary: This study compared the morphometry of the edentulous palate in children with CZS, UCL, and without craniofacial anomalies. The results showed that the CZS group had smaller intercanine distance and area, but greater dental arch length compared to the other groups. The UCL group had parameters similar to those of the control group.

Correlation between cleft width and dental arch symmetry in cleft lip and palate: a longitudinal study

Eloa Cristina Passucci Ambrosio, Maria Giulia Rezende Pucciarelli, Chiarella Sforza, Simone Soares, Marcio de Menezes, Cleide Felicio Carvalho Carrara, Maria Aparecida Andrade Moreira Machado, Thais Marchini Oliveira

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of cleft width on dental arch symmetry in children with unilateral cleft lip and palate. Digital dental casts of 41 children were analyzed, and cleft palate width and various measurements were obtained. The results showed that cleft width influenced palatal asymmetry, with the anterior and middle cleft widths impacting asymmetry in early life and the middle width impacting residual asymmetry. The findings suggest the importance of considering cleft width in the assessment and treatment of children with cleft lip and palate.

Propolis effects in periodontal disease seem to affect coronavirus disease: a meta-analysis

Silvia Helena de Carvalho Sales-Peres, Lucas Jose de Azevedo-Silva, Ana Virginia Santana Sampaio Castilho, Marcelo Salmazo Castro, Andre de Carvalho Sales-Peres, Maria Aparecida de Andrade Moreira Machado

Summary: This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effects of propolis on the severity of coronavirus disease symptoms by reducing periodontal disease. The study showed that propolis components have antiviral activity and can improve periodontal health. The antibacterial activity of propolis could be mediated through its direct action on microorganisms or the stimulation of the immune system. Therefore, propolis inhibits the replication of SARS-CoV-2 and improves general health by activating the immune system against coronavirus.

Comparison between the rotary (Hyflex EDM®) and manual (k-file ) technique for instrumentation of primary molars: a 12-month randomized clinical follow-up study

Andressa Cardoso Amorim, Amanda Valentim Caldeira, Samara Catarino Sampaio, Natalino Lourenco Neto, Thais Marchini Oliveira, Denismar Alves Nogueira, Ana Beatriz da Silveira Moretti, Vivien Thiemy Sakai

Summary: This study compared the use of manual and rotary files in pediatric dentistry. The results showed that the rotary system had a shorter instrumentation time compared to manual files, but both methods had similar filling quality and clinical and radiographic outcomes over a 12-month period. Additionally, the retention of restorations was found to be related to treatment prognosis.
