The use of an adequate method for evaluation of the adhesion of root canal filling materials provides more reliable results to allow comparison of the materials and substantiate their clinical choice. The aims of this study were to compare the shear bond strength (SBS) test and push-out test for evaluation of the adhesion of an epoxy-based endodontic sealer (AH Plus) to dentin and gutta-percha, and to assess the failure modes on the debonded surfaces by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Three groups were established (n=7): in group 1, root cylinders obtained from human canines were embedded in acrylic resin and had their canals prepared and filled with sealer; in group 2, longitudinal sections of dentin cylinders were embedded in resin with the canal surface smoothed and turned upwards; in group 3, gutta-percha cylinders were embedded in resin. Polyethylene tubes filled with sealer were positioned on the polished surface of the specimens (groups 2 and 3). The push-out test (group 1) and the SBS test (groups 2 and 3) were performed in an Instron universal testing machine running at crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Means (+/- SD) in MPa were: G1 (8.8 +/- 1.13), G2 (5.9 +/- 1.05) and G3 (3.8 +/- 0.55). Statistical analysis by ANOVA and Student's t-test (alpha=0.05) revealed statistically significant differences (p<0.01) among the groups. SEM analysis showed a predominance of adhesive and mixed failures of AH Plus sealer. The tested surface affected significantly the results with the sealer reaching higher bond strength to dentin than to gutta-percha with the SBS test. The comparison of the employed methodologies showed that the SBS test produced significantly lower bond strength values than the push-out test, was skilful in determining the adhesion of AH Plus sealer to dentin and gutta-percha, and required specimens that could be easily prepared for SEM, presenting as a viable alternative for further experiments.

Evaluation of rotary instruments with whipping motion in the biomechanical preparation of large root canals of young permanent teeth

Kleber Kildare Teodoro de Carvalho, Igor Bassi Ferreira Petean, Alice Correa Silva-Sousa, Rafael Camargo, Jardel Francisco Mazzi-Chaves, Yara Teresinha Correa Silva-Sousa, Manoel Damiao Sousa-Neto

Summary: Shaping ability of taper .01 instruments in large root canals was evaluated using micro-CT and SEM. XP-Endo Shaper showed less dentinal wear compared to manual instrumentation. Roundness and SMI were similar between both protocols. Reduced diameter and taper instruments promoted conservative wear and well-defined apical stop formation in large root canals.

Analysis of physicochemical properties of endodontic sealers containing rhodamine B

Maybell Tedesco, Filipe Colombo Vitali, Eduardo Antunes Bortoluzzi, Lucas da Fonseca Roberti Garcia, Cleonice da Silveira Teixeira

Summary: This study evaluated the physicochemical properties of endodontic sealers containing dry or diluted rhodamine B. The results showed that dry rhodamine decreased bond strength and prolonged the setting time of AH Plus, while diluted rhodamine decreased setting time and increased flowability of MTA Fillapex. The incorporation of rhodamine also caused pH reductions in both sealers. Overall, diluted rhodamine changed the properties of MTA Fillapex, and dry rhodamine changed the properties of AH Plus.

Development and validation of a method for creating incomplete vertical root fracture in extracted teeth

Luiz Carlos de Lima Dias-Junior, Marcio Correa, Cleonice da Silveira Teixeira, Diego Leonardo de Souza, Franklin R. Tay, Carlos Estrela, Lucas da Fonseca Roberti Garcia, Eduardo Antunes Bortoluzzi

Summary: The present study developed a method to induce incomplete root fracture in human extracted teeth for evaluating different diagnostic imaging techniques. The method involved removing tooth crowns, preparing root canals, and applying a customized conical wedge with a specific force to induce fractures. The method was successful in producing fractures that resembled clinical presentation. It is a reproducible and reliable method for laboratory studies on vertical root fractures.

Sergio Murilo Coelho, Mariana Travi Pandolfo, Eduardo Antunes Bortoluzzi, Hebert Luis Rossetto, Roberta Pinto Pereira, Mariana Comparotto Minamisako, Paulo Marcelo Rodrigues, Vicente Ribeiro Netto, Tatiana da Silva Ramos, Cleonice da Silveira Teixeira, Lucas da Fonseca Roberti Garcia

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of radiation therapy on the fracture resistance of simulated immature teeth. The results showed that irradiated teeth had a lower fracture resistance compared to non-irradiated teeth. Reinforcement with fibreglass posts increased the fracture resistance, regardless of radiation.

Reinaldo Dias Silva-Neto, Lais Lima Pelozo, Silmara Aparecida Corona, Sergio Luiz de Souza Salvador, Manoel Damiao Sousa-Neto, Aline Evangelista Souza-Gabriel

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of temporary restorative materials on antibiofilm and antimicrobial activity in root canals after an intra-oral challenge. Different materials were applied to treated roots and compared based on their ability to inhibit biofilm and bacterial penetration. High-viscosity glass ionomer and light-activated glass ionomer showed the strongest antibiofilm properties, followed by zinc-oxide cement without eugenol and zinc-oxide cement with eugenol. Unsealed roots had the highest biofilm accumulation and bacterial penetration compared to restored roots.

Amanda Freitas da Rosa, Bruna Venzke Fischer, Luiz Carlos de Lima Dias-Junior, Anna Victoria Costa Serique, Eduardo Antunes Bortoluzzi, Cleonice da Silveira Teixeira, Lucasda Fonseca Roberti Garcia

Summary: The aim of this study was to identify the most effective supplementary protocols used during endodontic reintervention for removing remaining filling material (FM). After a literature search and qualitative analysis of 46 articles, various supplementary protocols such as sonic and ultrasonic activation, ultrasonic inserts, and new devices were found to be effective in removing remaining FM, although complete removal was not always achieved.
