Summary: Diabetes mellitus and COVID-19 are global public health concerns, with the virus spreading through multiple pathways. Diabetic patients face higher risks of developing severe COVID-19 due to underlying disorders, highlighting the importance of strict glucose monitoring to prevent complications.

Summary: The objective of this study was to describe the clinical manifestations of COVID-19 in Haitian outpatients and identify risk factors for the severity of the disease. The study found that hypertension, chronic pulmonary disease, and tuberculosis were major risk factors for moderate-to-severe COVID-19 disease.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the clinical features, outcomes, and factors associated with mortality in patients with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia septicemia. The results suggest that appropriate empirical antibiotic treatment is significantly associated with lower mortality rates.

Summary: This study found a high prevalence of delirium in older patients admitted with COVID-19, with preexisting cognitive impairment as the main risk factor for developing delirium. Delirium was associated with significantly higher in-hospital mortality among these patients.

Summary: This study conducted a prospective study on patients with flu-like symptoms to explore important symptoms and factors related to mortality in COVID-19 infection. The results may be helpful in early prediction and risk reduction of mortality in patients infected with COVID-19.

Summary: The study found that factors like age (>= 60 years), isolation period, dyspnoea, altered mentality, diabetes, malignancy, dementia, and ICU admission were associated with increased odds of mortality in COVID-19 patients. A multivariable regression equation including all potential variables predicted mortality, while the Cox proportional hazards model showed increasing hazard ratios for mortality associated with factors like dementia, ICU admission, age >= 60 years, malignancy, and dyspnoea.

Summary: Cancer patients have a higher risk of COVID-19 infection and poorer prognosis compared to non-cancer patients. High-risk tumor, NRS2002 score > 3, advanced tumor stage, and recent adjuvant therapy (< 1 month) may be independent risk factors for in-hospital death among cancer patients.

Summary: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a bacterial infection that has higher morbidity and mortality rates in older adults. A systematic review of studies on IE in patients older than 65 years found an increased incidence of staphylococcal and streptococcal infections, higher prevalence of comorbidities, and significantly greater mortality risk in older adults.

Summary: Post-transplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM) is a common complication after heart transplant, sharing similarities with type 2 diabetes but also having specific causes. This study evaluated the incidence and risk factors of PTDM and studied its relationship with glucose metabolic alterations and heart transplant outcomes. The results showed that PTDM is closely related to BMI increase, metabolic syndrome development, and recipient survival.

Summary: This study investigated the frequency, risk factors, and outcomes of recurrent alcohol-associated hepatitis (rAH) in survivors of alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH). The results showed that rAH developed in approximately 8.8% of AH survivors and was associated with lower long-term survival. Marital status and medications for alcohol use disorder were found to be associated with a lower risk for rAH.

Summary: The clinical characteristics and risk factors of APE in the Asian population, especially in Thailand, are limited. This study found that active cancer, especially lung cancer, was the most common risk factor for APE in the Asian population. High-risk and intermediate-high-risk PE were associated with higher mortality rates.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate infection status and related risk factors in patients with severe alcohol-associated liver disease. The findings showed that patients with sAH are more susceptible to infections, while corticosteroid therapy appears to be the main risk factor for triggering invasive fungal infections.

Summary: This study analyzed the clinical characteristics of patients undergoing pericardiocentesis and identified predictors of in-hospital mortality. The results showed that iatrogenic causes and neoplastic diseases were the most common indications for pericardiocentesis. In addition, myocardial infarction-related etiology and recurrent/persistent cardiogenic shock were associated with increased in-hospital mortality rates.

Summary: This study investigated the clinical risk factors for peritoneal dialysis (PD) withdrawal at different dialysis duration. The results showed that patients who maintained PD for longer than 10 years were younger, had lower prevalence of diabetes, better nutrition status, absence of inflammation, better residual kidney function, and higher proportion of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors (RASi) usage at baseline. Absence of inflammation and use of RASi were independently associated with long-term PD maintenance.
