Nutritional antioxidants have been proposed as an expedient strategy to counter the potentially deleterious effects of scuba diving on endothelial function, flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and heart function. Sixteen volunteers performing a single standard dive (20min at 33m) according to US Navy diving procedures were randomly assigned to two groups: one was administered with two doses of 200mg of an anthocyanins (AC)-rich extract from red oranges, 12 and 4h before diving. Anthocyanins supplementation significantly modulated the effects of diving on haematocrit, body water distribution and FMD. AC administration significantly reduces the potentially harmful endothelial effects of a recreational single dive. The lack of any significant effect on the most common markers of plasma antioxidant capacity suggests that the mechanism underlying this protective activity is independent of the putative antioxidant effect of AC and possibly involves cellular signalling modulation of the response to high oxygen. Minimally Invasive Pronator Quadratus Sparing Approach versus Extended Flexor Carpi Radialis Approach with Pronator Quadratus Repair for Volar Plating in Distal Radial Fractures

Chul Ki Goorens, Niels Debaenst, Kjell Van Royen, Steven Provyn, Jean F. Goubau

Summary: Comparing MIPO with PQ sparing and conventional PQ repair for distal radial fractures, the study found that MIPO group had better flexion-extension mobility and lower Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand scores, with significantly lower pain scores at 6 weeks but no significant differences in grip strength and patient satisfaction.

Summary: Acute ascent to high altitudes resulted in decreased oxygen saturation without hypoxia symptoms. Cardiac output and oxygen delivery index increased as compensatory mechanisms. Vascular function changed but returned to normal after descent to lower altitudes.

Summary: This study demonstrates a strong level of agreement and reliability among a limited group of physical therapists, a radiologist, and an orthopedic surgeon in detecting rotator cuff pathology and involvement of the rotator cable through the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound on fresh frozen cadaver shoulders.

Barriers to Physical Activity in Children and Adults Living With Type 1 Diabetes: A Complex Link With Real-life Glycemic Excursions

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether perceived barriers to physical activity (PA) in individuals with type 1 diabetes are based on real-life experienced glycemic effects. The results showed that in children/adolescents, the higher the risk of nocturnal hypoglycemia after PA sessions, the more they reported it as a barrier. Conversely, in adults, a higher proportion of PA sessions accompanied by a drop in blood glucose led to less hypoglycemia being a barrier.

Oxidative Stress Response's Kinetics after 60 Minutes at Different (30% or 100%) Normobaric Hyperoxia Exposures

Clement Leveque, Simona Mrakic-Sposta, Pierre Lafere, Alessandra Vezzoli, Peter Germonpre, Alexandre Beer, Stephane Mievis, Fabio Virgili, Kate Lambrechts, Sigrid Theunissen, Francois Guerrero, Costantino Balestra

Summary: This study investigated the effects of normobaric oxygen intake on metabolic responses, with a focus on mild and high fractions. The results showed that oxidation markers increased from 30 min to reach a peak at 8 h post intake. Inflammation markers started to appear after 8 h, with a significantly higher level in the 100% oxygen group compared to the 30% group. This study suggests a biphasic response characterized by initial permissive oxidation followed by increased inflammation.

Elevations of Extracellular Vesicles and Inflammatory Biomarkers in Closed Circuit SCUBA Divers

Summary: Blood-borne extracellular vesicles and inflammatory mediators were evaluated in divers using a closed circuit rebreathing apparatus and custom-mixed gases to diminish some diving risks. The study found that specific proteins in extracellular vesicles significantly increased in deep and shallow divers, indicating that diving triggers inflammatory events that are not proportional to the depth of diving.

Oxidative Stress Response Kinetics after 60 Minutes at Different Levels (10% or 15%) of Normobaric Hypoxia Exposure

Clement Leveque, Simona Mrakic Sposta, Sigrid Theunissen, Peter Germonpre, Kate Lambrechts, Alessandra Vezzoli, Maristella Gussoni, Morgan Levenez, Pierre Lafere, Francois Guerrero, Costantino Balestra

Summary: This study investigated the metabolic responses to hypoxic breathing for 1 hour with inspired fractions of 10% and 15% oxygen. Blood samples were taken from 14 healthy nonsmoking volunteers before and at different time points after the hypoxic exposure. The study examined the levels of oxidative stress, antioxidant systems, and immune-inflammation markers. The findings provide insights into how acute hypoxia affects bodily functions and the protective mechanisms the body employs to maintain redox homeostasis in response to oxidative stress.

Summary: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a treatment method that exposes the body to pure oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure. This study investigated the metabolic responses to hyperbaric hyperoxia exposures at 1.4 and 2.5 ATA for 1 hour. The results showed that both mild and high hyperbaric hyperoxia led to a significant increase in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant reactions.

Summary: Exposure to acute normobaric hypoxia (NH) leads to reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, which can cause oxidative damage. This study investigated the production kinetics of ROS and its impact on oxidative damage. Nine subjects were monitored for ROS production and oxidative damage markers in blood and urine. The results showed a peak ROS production at 4 hours, and oxidative damage markers increased at 4 hours and 1 hour after hypoxia offset. These reversible phenomena were SpO(2)-dependent. The experimental model could be useful for evaluating acclimatization level, especially in mountain rescues involving technical/medical workers with limited acclimatization time, such as helicopter flights.
