In the present study, we examined the effects of fish oil supplementation in 3 months old male Wistar rats on changes in plasma and liver lipid metabolism and oxidative stress parameters. Twenty Wistar rats were randomly divided into two groups of ten animals: control group and intervention group, treated for 6 weeks with fish oil capsules containing 45 mg eicosapentanoic acid and 30 mg docosahexanoic acid. After intervention, biochemical parameters in plasma [triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and total cholesterol, urea, creatinine and uric acid], fatty acid (FAs) profile of liver phospholipids and parameters of oxidative stress in liver [activity of catalase, superoxide dismutase and paraoxonase (PON1), concentration of nitrites, lipid peroxidation (LPO), free thiol (SH) groups and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) izoenzymes were determined. Treatment with fish oil improved FAs profile of liver phospholipids, increasing n-3 FAs and decreasing n-6/n-3 ratio. Significant decrease in plasma TG and LDL concentration, and increase in the level of HDL and uric acid were found in intervention group at the end of the study. Catalase activity, LPO, and nitrites concentration in liver were significantly decreased, after the supplementation, together with elevated PON1 activity. Applied treatment significantly improved plasma lipid profile, liver FAs composition and parameters of oxidative stress in male Wistar rats.

Role of Corticosteroids in Drug-Induced Liver Injury. A Systematic Review

Einar S. Bjoernsson, Vesna Vucic, Guido Stirnimann, Mercedes Robles-Diaz

Summary: Corticosteroid therapy has shown beneficial effects in moderate/severe drug-induced liver injuries (DILI) and drug-induced autoimmune hepatitis (DI-AIH), but not in drug-induced fulminant acute liver failure (ALF). The majority of patients with CPIs-induced liver injury responded to corticosteroids, although spontaneous recovery is common without treatment. Randomized controlled trials are needed to properly assess the role of corticosteroids in DILI.

Relationship between biochemical parameters and paraoxonase 1 activity of boar seminal plasma and semen quality

Svetlana Nedic, Miloje Duric, Slobodanka Vakanjac, Sveta Arsic, Sreten Nedic, Marko Samardzija, Suncica Borozan

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the biochemical components and antioxidant protection parameters in boar seminal plasma (SP) and their relationship with semen quality. The study found that good quality semen had higher levels of ionized calcium, total cholesterol, lactate dehydrogenase activity, thiol groups, paraoxonase 1, and total antioxidant capacity, while poor quality semen had higher phosphorus concentrations and alkaline phosphatase activity. Various correlations were observed between these parameters and sperm motility and morphology. Elevated levels of paraoxonase 1 and total antioxidant capacity in SP were found to be potential biomarkers of boar semen quality. The association between paraoxonase 1 activity and boar semen quality has not been previously reported.

Summary: The bioactive compound oleuropein derived from olives was evaluated for its effects on damage induced by hydrogen peroxide in human trophoblast cells in vitro. The study found that oleuropein had cytoprotective effects by improving antioxidant status, preventing protein and lipid damage, and reducing iNOS levels.

Nutrition and Physical Activity as Modulators of Osteosarcopenic Adiposity: A Scoping Review and Recommendations for Future Research

Vesna Vucic, Danijela Ristic-Medic, Aleksandra Arsic, Snjezana Petrovic, Marija Paunovic, Nadja Vasiljevic, Jasminka Z. Z. Ilich

Summary: Osteosarcopenic adiposity (OSA) syndrome, characterized by the deterioration of bone, muscle, and adipose tissue, remains poorly understood despite extensive research. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of dietary intake/nutritional status and physical activity on OSA through a review of human studies. After screening articles published in English and conducted on healthy individuals aged ≥18 years, a total of 23 studies were included. The findings suggest that higher intake of protein, calcium, potassium, and vitamins D and C, as well as a diet rich in fruits and low-fat dairy foods, may have a positive influence on OSA. Meanwhile, higher serum levels of vitamin D were associated with better OSA outcomes, while higher ferritin levels were linked to poorer outcomes. Resistance training was also found to be a beneficial intervention for older women with OSA.

Antioxidative Effects of Black Currant and Cornelian Cherry Juices in Different Tissues of an Experimental Model of Metabolic Syndrome in Rats

Marija Paunovic, Jelena Kotur-Stevuljevic, Aleksandra Arsic, Maja Milosevic, Vanja Todorovic, Azra Guzonjic, Vesna Vucic, Snjezana Petrovic

Summary: A Western-style diet high in fat and simple sugars is a major risk factor for chronic diseases and metabolic syndrome. Consuming polyphenol-rich juices can help prevent oxidative stress caused by a high-fat high-fructose diet. These juices have shown to reduce oxidative stress parameters and provide protection mechanisms.

Dietary Supplementation of Chestnut Tannins in Prepartum Dairy Cows Improves Antioxidant Defense Mechanisms Interacting with Thyroid Status

Radisa Prodanovic, Sreten Nedic, Ivan Vujanac, Jovan Bojkovski, Svetlana Nedic, Ljubomir Jovanovic, Danijela Kirovski, Suncica Borozan

Summary: Cows in the peripartal period experience changes in thyroid hormones and are vulnerable to lipomobilization and oxidative stress. The addition of chestnut tannins in the diet may improve feed efficiency and prevent oxidative stress-related health issues. This study examined the effects of chestnut tannin supplementation during the close-up period on thyroid status and the interaction between thyroid hormones and oxidative stress biomarkers in prepartum dairy cows.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the correlation between cholinesterase activity and oxidative stress parameters in the liver and diaphragm during prolonged use of diazinon. Wistar rats were treated with diazinon for different periods of time and the activity of cholinesterase and oxidative stress parameters were examined. The results showed significant changes in cholinesterase activity and oxidative stress parameters in the liver and diaphragm during the cholinergic crisis and outside the crisis.

Summary: DLBCL is the most common hematological malignancy worldwide. In our study, we observed differential lipid profiles in treatment-naive female patients with DLBCL and disease-free controls. We suggest here S1P, SM 36:1, SM 34:1, and PI 34:1 as DLBCL lipid signatures for further validation in larger DLBCL cohorts.

Summary: Herb-induced liver injury (HILI) caused by ashwagandha supplements is an important concern, as there have been reported cases of liver injury and even liver transplantation associated with its use. This paper reviews all reported cases and presents two new cases of ashwagandha hepatotoxicity. The findings show a probable relationship between ashwagandha and liver injury, emphasizing the need for caution when consuming ashwagandha supplements.
