Oil palm is one of the most productive oil producing crops and can store up to 90% oil in its fruit mesocarp. However, the biosynthetic regulation and drivers of palm mesocarp development are still not well understood. Multiplatform metabolomics technology was used to profile palm metabolites during six critical stages of fruit development in order to better understand lipid biosynthesis. Significantly higher amino acid levels were observed in palm mesocarp preceding lipid biosynthesis. Nucleosides were found to be in high concentration during lipid biosynthesis, whereas levels of metabolites involved in the tricarboxylic acid cycle were more concentrated during early fruit development. Apart from insights into the regulation of metabolites during fruit development in oil palm, these results provide potentially useful metabolite yield markers and genes of interest for use in breeding programs.

IgE-binding residues analysis of the house dust mite allergen Der p 23

Sze Lei Pang, Sri Anusha Matta, Yang Yie Sio, Yu Ting Ng, Yee-How Say, Chyan Leong Ng, Fook Tim Chew

Summary: The study identified K44 and E46 residues as major IgE-binding residues of the Der p 23 allergen for HDM-sensitized individuals. Individuals sensitized only to HDM have a higher number of IgE-binding residues compared to polysensitized individuals. Those with allergic multimorbidity and moderate-to-severe allergic rhinitis also exhibit a higher number of IgE-binding residues.

Yang Yie Sio, Ping Shi, Yee-How Say, Fook Tim Chew

Summary: This study identified significant associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the chromosome 4q21 region and NAAA gene expression levels at both gene and protein levels, confirming their functional role in allergic rhinitis (AR) susceptibility. The findings provide a better understanding of the genetic mechanisms contributing to the pathogenesis of AR.

Summary: Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is frequently observed in chronic respiratory diseases and is associated with poor outcomes. This study investigates the occurrence and clinical relevance of Aspergillus sensitization and ABPA in bronchiectasis-COPD overlap (BCO) compared with COPD or bronchiectasis without overlap. The results suggest that BCO is associated with a higher frequency and severity of ABPA, leading to worse clinical outcomes.

Golgin A7 family member B (GOLGA7B) is a plausible novel gene associating high glycaemic index diet with acne vulgaris

Yee-How Say, Yang Yie Sio, Anna Hwee Sing Heng, Yu Ting Ng, Sri Anusha Matta, Sze Lei Pang, Keng Foo Teh, Yi Ru Wong, Smyrna Moti Rawanan Shah, Kavita Reginald, Fook Tim Chew

Summary: The study identified the signaling pathways between high glycemic index/glycemic load diet and acne vulgaris. By analyzing the genomic and transcriptomic data of acne cases and controls, several genes related to acne and dietary quality were discovered. Additionally, an intronic SNP in the GOLGA7B gene was found to be associated with acne. These findings provide a new model for the pathogenesis of acne related to high glycemic index/glycemic load diet.

Comparative Genomics Reveals Insights into the Divergent Evolution of Astigmatic Mites and Household Pest Adaptations

Qing Xiong, Angel Tsz-Yau Wan, Xiaoyu Liu, Cathy Sin-Hang Fung, Xiaojun Xiao, Nat Malainual, Jinpao Hou, Lingyi Wang, Mingqiang Wang, Kevin Yi Yang, Yubao Cui, Elaine Lai-Han Leung, Wenyan Nong, Soo-Kyung Shin, Shannon Wing-Ngor Au, Kyoung Yong Jeong, Fook-Tim Chew, Jerome Ho-Lam Hui, Ting-Fan Leung, Anchalee Tungtrongchitr, Nanshan Zhong, Zhigang Liu, Stephen Kwok-Wing Tsui

Summary: This study examines the evolutionary origin, diverse lifestyles, and quick adaptation of astigmatic mites in human household environments using six high-quality assembled and annotated genomes. The research reveals that astigmatic mites evolved from Prostigmata, notorious plant pests, and rapidly diversified from soil oribatid mites. The study also highlights the rapid expansion of gene families via tandem gene duplications in astigmatic mites, providing genetic resources for adaptation to changing household environments. Additionally, massive horizontal gene transfer events occurred during the evolution of astigmatic mites, enabling detoxification and digestive functions and offering potential drug targets for pest control.

A systematic review of skin ageing genes: gene pleiotropy and genes on the chromosomal band 16q24.3 may drive skin ageing

Jun Yan Ng, Fook Tim Chew

Summary: Skin ageing is influenced by both genetic and lifestyle factors. This systematic review summarizes the current knowledge on skin ageing phenotypes and the associated genetic risk factors. The study identifies several promising SNPs and hub genes that are significantly associated with skin ageing. The findings suggest that pleiotropy plays a role in skin ageing and further research should focus on the contributions of genes on the chromosomal band 16q24.3.

Genetic/Protein Association of Atopic Dermatitis and Tooth Agenesis

Wanlu Ouyang, Charlene E. Goh, Wei Bo Ng, Fook Tim Chew, Eric Peng Huat Yap, Chin-ying Stephen Hsu

Summary: Atopic dermatitis and tooth developmental abnormalities often occur together in some patients. It is suggested that there may be a common underlying mechanism involving gene mutations and protein interactions. This review explores the key gene mutations and signaling pathways associated with both diseases and identifies a possible association between the Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway and desmosomal proteins. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms driving their co-occurrence and development of these diseases.

An updated prevalence of asthma, its phenotypes, and the identification of the potential asthma risk factors among young Chinese adults recruited in Singapore

Qi Yi Ambrose Wong, Jun Jie Lim, Jun Yan Ng, Praneeth Malipeddi, Ying Eliza Lim, Yang Yie Sio, Fook Tim Chew

Summary: The study found that the lifetime asthma prevalence rate among young Chinese adults in Singapore was 19.1%, while the current asthma prevalence rate was 6.3%. Parental history of asthma was identified as the most important risk factor, and increased consumption of certain foods and television/computer usage were also associated with asthma risk. Future research should consider the interaction between various factors to better understand the impact of environment and lifestyle on asthma.
