The establishment of potential age markers of Madeira wine is of paramount significance as it may contribute to detect frauds and to ensure the authenticity of wine. Considering the chemical groups of furans, lactones, volatile phenols, and acetals, 103 volatile compounds were tentatively identified; among these, 71 have been reported for the first time in Madeira wines. The chemical groups that could be used as potential age markers were predominantly acetals, namely, diethoxymethane, 1,1-diethoxyethane, 1,1-diethoxy-2-methyl-propane, 1-(1-ethoxyethoxy)-pentane, trans-dioxane and 2-propyl-1,3-dioxolane, and from the other chemical groups, 5-methylfurfural and cis-oak-lactone, independently of the variety and the type of wine. GC x GC-ToFMS system offers a more useful approach to identify these compounds compared to previous studies using GC-qMS, due to the orthogonal systems, that reduce coelution, increase peak capacity and mass selectivity, contributing to the establishment of new potential Madeira wine age markers. Remarkable results were also obtained in terms of compound identification based on the organized structure of the peaks of structurally related compounds in the GC x GC peak apex plots. This information represents a valuable approach for future studies, as the ordered-structure principle can considerably help the establishment of the composition of samples. This new approach provides data that can be extended to determine age markers of other types of wines.

Summary: The impact of Japanese beetles on the quality indicators of Nebbiolo and Erbaluce grapes, specifically their phenolic and volatile composition, was examined. The study revealed that grapes produced by plants attacked by Japanese beetles had higher levels of phenolic compounds compared to healthy plants. Similarly, the volatile composition of the affected grapes was also higher. The plants responded to the beetle attack by increasing the content of certain volatile compounds.

Evaluation of Tropane Alkaloids in Teas and Herbal Infusions: Effect of Brewing Time and Temperature on Atropine and Scopolamine Content

Lorena Gonzalez-Gomez, Sonia Morante-Zarcero, Jorge A. M. Pereira, Jose S. Camara, Isabel Sierra

Summary: This study analyzed 33 samples of tea and herbal tea infusions purchased in Spain and Portugal and found that 64% of the samples were contaminated with atropine and scopolamine. White and green teas were more contaminated compared to black and other herbal teas. Among the 21 contaminated samples, 15 had concentrations above the maximum limit set by the EU Commission Regulation (0.2 ng/mL) for liquid herbal infusions.

Quality Indicators Compliance and Survival Outcomes in Breast Cancer according to Age in a Certified Center

Fernando Osorio, Antonio S. Barros, Barbara Peleteiro, Isabel Amendoeira, Jose Luis Fougo

Summary: In this study, we compared the outcomes of breast cancer among three age groups and found that older patients were more susceptible to suboptimal treatment and had a lower overall survival rate. This was not associated with the cancer itself, but rather with undertreatment. The study suggests that tumor characteristics and treatment compliance are better predictors of survival than chronological age.

The impact of heart failure therapy in patients with mildly reduced ejection fraction: a network meta-analysis

Marta Leite, Francisco Sampaio, Francisca A. Saraiva, Silvia O. Diaz, Antonio S. Barros, Ricardo Fontes-Carvalho

Summary: Recently, HF guidelines have re-classified HF patients with LVEF between 41% and 49% as HFmrEF. The treatment of HFmrEF patients is often considered a grey zone due to the lack of RCTs exclusively conducted on this population. A network meta-analysis was conducted to compare the treatment effect of different medications in HFmrEF cardiovascular outcomes.
