A high-throughput mass spectrometric method is presented for the simultaneous detection of Sudan I, II, III, IV, and Para-Red azodyes in foodstuff. The method is based on the use of deuterium-labeled internal standards and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) in a triple-quadrupole instrument. The gas-phase breakdown pattern of each labeled and unlabeled analogue displays the naphthoic moiety as a common fragment. The search for the parents of this common species (parent ion scans) allows, by flow injection and in a single run, the evaluation of the presence of each polluting species spiked in typical foodstuffs. A detailed assay of each azodye was performed by LC-APCI and isotope dilution method, through the multiple reaction monitoring approach, using deuterium-labeled internal standards. Sudan dyes can be quantified above the threshold of 10 ppb except for Sudan Para-Red, for which the limit of quantification was 20 ppb, likely due to the different ionization efficiency.

Direct wine profiling by mass spectrometry (MS): A comparison of different ambient MS approaches

Lucia Bartella, Marcos Bouza, Priscilla Rocio-Bautista, Leonardo Di Donna, Juan F. Garcia-Reyes, Antonio Molina-Diaz

Summary: Ambient mass spectrometry is an alternative to classical mass spectrometry that allows fast, in-situ, and high-throughput analysis of samples with minimal sample pretreatment. This study explores the capability of different ambient ionization sources to analyze raw wine for quality control purposes. The spectra obtained from these sources showed the ability to classify and differentiate wine samples based on various compounds, including organic acids, phenolic acids, derivatives, and low-molecular-mass flavonoids. The plasma-based methods offer the advantage of solventless analysis, while the paper spray (PS) approach provides a richer MS profile.

Bioplastics: A new analytical challenge

Valentina Censi, Filippo Saiano, David Bongiorno, Serena Indelicato, Anna Napoli, Daniela Piazzese

Summary: Although petroleum-based plastics have advantages in meeting performance requirements, they are associated with environmental problems throughout their life cycle. Therefore, reducing consumption and dependence on fossil-based materials is necessary to preserve natural resources and combat climate change. The use of biopolymers has grown exponentially due to improvements in their physical and mechanical properties. This review discusses different ways of biopolymer degradation and evaluates their potential in eco-sustainability. It also focuses on the quantitative analysis methods of bioplastics and their degradation by-products, comparing and evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of each technique.

High-yield synthesis of HMF from glucose and fructose by selective catalysis with water-tolerant rare earth metal triflates assisted by choline chloride

Fabrizio Olivito, Vincenzo Algieri, Matteo Antonio Tallarida, Antonio Jiritano, Paola Costanzo, Loredana Maiuolo, Antonio De Nino

Summary: The conversion of naturally occurring organic substances into value-added platform chemicals by simple, green, and efficient procedures represents one of the most accessible and sought-after routes towards sustainable chemistry. In this study, the catalytic activity of rare-earth metal triflates in conjunction with choline chloride was reported, which can selectively convert glucose and fructose into hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The catalytic system showed good activity and selectivity, with yields of 94% and 99% for glucose and fructose, respectively, using 8% and 4% molar quantities of catalyst.

Binding ability of L-carnosine towards Cu2+, Mn2+and Zn2+in aqueous solution

Chiara Abate, Donatella Aiello, Massimiliano Cordaro, Ottavia Giuffre, Anna Napoli, Claudia Foti

Summary: This study investigates the thermodynamic properties and chelating behavior of a naturally occurring dipeptide, L-carnosine, in its interactions with three transition metal cations, Cu2+, Mn2+, and Zn2+. Potentiometric and NMR titration experiments were conducted to determine the speciation models and formation constants of the metal complexes. The study also utilized High Resolution Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometry to further understand the chelating mode. The sequestering ability of carnosine towards Cu2+, Mn2+, and Zn2+ was quantified under physiological conditions.

Summary: Dyslipidemia is a metabolic disorder associated with lipid imbalance, leading to conditions such as atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. Statins are the main pharmacological therapy, but their limitations have prompted the search for new strategies. This study investigated the hypolipidemic effects of a picrocrocin-enriched fraction derived from saffron extract in HepG2 cells. The results suggest that this compound possesses interesting hypolipidemic effects through a non-statin-like mechanism, highlighting the biological potential of saffron as a useful adjuvant in balancing blood lipid homeostasis.

Bio-Based Polyurethane Foams for the Removal of Petroleum-Derived Pollutants: Sorption in Batch and in Continuous-Flow

Fabrizio Olivito, Vincenzo Algieri, Antonio Jiritano, Matteo Antonio Tallarida, Paola Costanzo, Loredana Maiuolo, Antonio De Nino

Summary: In this study, we assessed the potential of two synthesized bio-based polyurethane foams, PU1 and PU2, for the removal of diesel and gasoline from water mixtures. The results showed that both PU1 and PU2 had a higher sorption capacity for diesel/water mixtures compared to gasoline/water mixtures. The sorption process followed a pseudo second-order kinetic model, and the best isotherm models were Langmuir and Redlich-Peterson models. Furthermore, the foams exhibited even better performance in continuous-flow experiments, and can be regenerated up to 50 times without losing efficacy through centrifugation.
