Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of rim and bag breakup in aerodynamic droplets, identifying three main modes contributing to the breakup sizes and proposing a new relationship between the dominant breakup mechanisms and the size distribution. It is shown that different instabilities and collision mechanisms play a role in the breakup of the rim, leading to a reasonable prediction of the droplet size distribution.

Summary: The size distribution of child droplets resulting from dual-bag fragmentation of a water drop is studied using shadowgraphy and digital in-line holography techniques. The fragmentation of the parent drop contributes to small droplet atomization, while core drop disintegration leads to larger fragments. The dual-bag fragmentation exhibits a bi-modal size distribution, while the single-bag breakup shows a tri-modal size distribution. An analytical model developed by Jackiw & Ashgriz accurately predicts the experimentally observed droplet volume probability density for dual-bag fragmentation.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of the simultaneous impact of two droplets on a dry substrate. A new micro-controlled droplet generator is developed to release two equally sized water droplets simultaneously on-demand. The impact processes for both deposition and splashing of the liquid sheet are analyzed. Simultaneous high-speed imaging provides a quantification of the three-dimensional structure of the sheet morphology, including the temporal evolution of various features.

Summary: This paper studies the breakup of a circular jet disturbed by wavelength modulation to produce non-uniform patterns of droplet sizes. Experimental results show that the jet breakup length and droplet size can be precisely controlled, and the coexistence stage of two droplet sizes depends on the difference in the growth rates of each disturbance. By applying multiple wavelengths in the perturbation, the potential to generate more mixing droplet streams is demonstrated.

Summary: In this study, we conducted novel numerical simulations to investigate the process of bag breakup in liquid droplets. We examined the early-time drop deformation and the late-time formation of a bag film in comparison with theory and experiment. By adopting the manifold death (MD) algorithm, we achieved grid convergence of fragment statistics and analyzed the mechanisms of bag film disintegration. Furthermore, we investigated the effects of liquid Ohnesorge number on the bag breakup process and found a non-monotonic relationship between the average diameter of bag film fragments and Oh.

Summary: The objective of this study is to investigate the interaction between turbulence and coagulation through direct numerical simulation (DNS) coupled with the population balance equation (PBE). The study found that correlations due to turbulent fluctuations of particle number density make a significant contribution to the coagulation process.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of surfactant on air bubbles evolving at the water surface, finding that low contamination leads to broad surface size distribution due to bubble coalescence, while higher surfactant concentrations prevent coalescence and increase bubble lifetime, resulting in a surface size distribution identical to the bulk distribution.

Summary: This work presents a method to calculate the meniscus shape by solving a differential equation using cubic Bezier curves. The method solves a complicated nonlinear differential equation using Bezier control points and the least-squares method. The results agree with numerical solutions reported in the literature.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of swirl number (S) and aerodynamic Weber number (We(A)) on shear-based spray formation. The experimental results show that increasing the swirl number improves atomization and disperses the droplets. However, in certain flow conditions, the droplet diameter is not related to the swirl number.

Summary: The study utilizes two-point statistical equations to evaluate the physics of liquid-gas shear flows, showing that the theory is adequate for highlighting the preferential direction of liquid transport. By examining the geometrical properties of the liquid-gas interface, different characteristics of liquid transport in various scales and flow positions are revealed.

Summary: A study has found that surfactant solutions in tiny concentrations can effectively inhibit the Worthington jet by generating a strong surface tension gradient during the impact process, which weakens the energy of the rebound jet and inhibits the formation of secondary droplets. This method can be applied to prevent the aerosol spread of pathogens and pollutants, as well as reduce the damage and waste caused by liquid splashes.

Summary: Experimental study on the breakup of liquid bridges composed of aqueous Poly(acrylic acid) solutions reveals that for polymer concentrations exceeding a threshold, the contact line on the surface with the highest receding contact angle fully retracts before the liquid bridge capillary breakup occurs, causing the liquid to remain on the opposing surface. This behavior is attributed to the competition between thinning of the bridge neck and receding of the contact line on the surface with lower receding contact angle.

Summary: In 2014, Maryland implemented global budgets into its hospital payment model, which led to reduced hospital spending and utilization. While there was a decrease in Medicare admissions in Maryland, there were no changes for commercial plan members, but their inpatient spending decreased, saving $796 million.
