Summary: This study compares the level of discrimination among obese patients in Poland and Germany and finds that obesity significantly affects the social and economic well-being of patients. The study suggests the need to reduce weight stigma and alleviate the socioeconomic and psychological burden of obesity.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the pathologies on preoperative EGD in patients qualified for bariatric surgeries. The results showed that patients with obesity had a higher prevalence of esophageal pathologies compared to the control group, while the control group was more likely to have duodenal pathologies. Additionally, patient sex was a significant predictor of duodenal pathologies.

Summary: Revisional bariatric surgery is becoming more popular as long-term follow-up studies show a high failure rate of primary surgery. This study aimed to determine the best revisional procedure after failure of primary restrictive surgery. The results showed that biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch and single-anastomosis duodenoileal bypass were the most effective procedures in terms of weight loss.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate zinc deficiency among morbidly obese patients before and after different types of bariatric surgeries, finding a high prevalence of preoperative zinc deficiency that increased postoperatively. It is recommended to assess zinc serum levels and prescribe zinc supplements before bariatric operations to reduce the incidence of zinc deficiency after surgery.

Summary: This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of medical therapy, sleeve gastrectomy (SG), and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) in patients with severe obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D). The results showed that RYGB is the most cost-effective treatment strategy, resulting in the highest number of quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) gained.

Summary: This study proposes a comprehensive technique called combined airway and bariatric surgery (CABS) to improve both obesity and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The retrospective study showed that CABS can significantly improve AHI and BMI in morbidly obese OSA patients, with high success and cure rates for OSA, as well as improved quality of life and general health.

Summary: Bariatric surgery is an effective method for weight loss and long-term comorbidity resolution. This study aims to investigate the effects of two types of exercise, moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT), on body composition, cardiopulmonary function, and perceived quality of life in bariatric surgery patients. The study will be a randomized controlled exploratory pilot trial involving 75 adults scheduled for bariatric surgery, with outcomes assessed at various time points to evaluate the impact of exercise on the participants.

Summary: This study examined the outcomes of patients diagnosed with malignancy before and after bariatric surgery in a French multisite cohort. The results showed that patients with a history of malignancy and those diagnosed with postoperative malignancy mainly had breast and gynecologic cancers. It was found that the weight loss outcomes one and two years after surgery were similar in both groups. Furthermore, the study suggests that a history of malignancy should not be considered an absolute contraindication for bariatric surgery.

Summary: Revisional surgery to convert sleeve gastrectomy (SG) to either Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) or duodenal switch (DS) can lead to significant and sustained weight loss in the first 12 months. There was no significant difference in excess body weight loss between RYGB and DS patients at 6, 12, and 24 months, except for greater weight loss in RYGB patients at 3 months. Procedure length was significantly longer for DS compared to RYGB, with no significant differences in length of stay and 30-day readmission rates.

Summary: Obesity is linked to worsened asthma outcomes, but bariatric surgery has shown to be effective in weight loss and asthma improvement. Compared to nonsurgical weight loss programs, bariatric surgery offers greater weight loss and more consistent improvement in asthma symptoms. However, more research is needed to study the effects of surgery on both mild and severe asthma cases.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the risk factors of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). The study found that 16.1% of patients developed de novo GERD symptoms after LSG, and these symptoms were significantly associated with older age and lower BMI.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between beta cell function and total body weight loss (TBWL%) 1 to 4 years after bariatric surgery in patients with morbid obesity. The results showed that baseline beta cell function was associated with long-term weight loss, especially after the first year post-surgery. This may be a helpful predictor of weight loss in clinical practice.
