Utility and prognostic significance of leukocyte ratios in dogs with Primary Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia

Summary: Based on a retrospective study of medical records from two veterinary teaching hospitals, this study suggests that lower monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR) and higher neutrophil to monocyte ratio (NMR) may predict poorer prognosis in untreated dogs with immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA).

Comparison of six microscopic methods and two operators for estimation of white and red blood cells in canine urine sediment

Summary: This study aimed to compare the results obtained by two operators using six microscopic methods for the quantification of urinary leukocytes and erythrocytes. The results showed that although there were some differences between operators, all methods exhibited good reproducibility. Stained sediment evaluations allowed better identification of leukocytes by inexperienced operators but introduced bias in erythrocyte counts.

Gene Expression Profiles of the Immuno-Transcriptome in Equine Asthma

Summary: This study comprehensively defined the transcriptomic fingerprints of mild and severe equine asthma using gene expression analysis. The pathogenesis of equine asthma involves reduced mucociliary clearance and excessive complement activation leading to tissue injury. Furthermore, severe equine asthma is characterized by chronic inflammation and tissue remodeling similar to human asthma.

Clinicopathological findings and risk factors associated with Cytauxzoon spp. infection in cats: A case-control study (2008-2021)

Summary: This study evaluated clinicopathological findings and risk factors associated with Cytauxzoon spp. infection in domestic cats. The results showed that infection mainly manifested as subclinical infection, and anemia was more common in subclinical infected cats.

Pre-analytical and analytical variability of reticulocyte counts in dogs

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate potential sources of analytical and pre-analytical errors when performing automated and manual counts. The results showed that intra-assay coefficients of variation were lower for automated counts than for manual counts. Comparison between automated and mean total manual reticulocyte count showed no significant differences. In both refrigerated samples and those stored at room temperature, an increase in reticulocyte count was recorded only after 72 hours. It is recommended to perform the analysis as soon as possible after sampling.

Summary: This study highlights the importance of evaluating the clinical health status of apparently healthy L. infantum-seropositive dogs in Europe. Routine laboratory tests, including antibody quantification and PCR, should be performed to detect sick dogs with clinicopathological findings that would otherwise remain undetected.

Effect of Local Administration of Meglumine Antimoniate and Polyhexamethylene Biguanide Alone or in Combination with a Toll-like Receptor 4 Agonist for the Treatment of Papular Dermatitis due to Leishmania infantum in Dogs

Summary: This study evaluated the safety and clinical efficacy of local meglumine antimoniate, locally administered polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) alone or PHMB in combination with a Toll-like receptor 4 agonist (TLR4a) for the treatment of papular dermatitis due to L. infantum infection. The results showed that local administration of meglumine antimoniate had the fastest clinical resolution, while local administration of PHMB (alone or with TLR4a) also showed positive results. In conclusion, the local administration of meglumine antimoniate appears to be safe and clinically efficient for the treatment of canine papular dermatitis due to L. infantum infection.

Effect of storage on the nitro blue tetrazolium reduction test in dog blood samples

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of storage on NBTT in dog blood samples. The results showed that the NBTT can be performed up to 72 h after the collection of canine blood if correctly refrigerated at 4℃.

Chitinase-1 Activity in Serum of Cats with FIP

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the possible changes in serum chitotriosidase (CHIT1) activity in cats with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). The results showed that CHIT1 activity can identify sick cats and, to some extent, cats with FIP, although further studies are needed to fully explore its diagnostic or prognostic potential for FIP.

The results highlighted differences in tumour sites and potential role of risk factors. This emphasizes the importance of animal cancer registration initiatives to deepen knowledge of tumour epidemiology in dogs and humans.
